Freehand frenzy Challenge
This challenge is called a "Freehand Frenzy".
And the idea is to use a vector program in much the same way you would sketch something with a pencil on paper!
The basic idea is that I think it would be cool if people could submit a piece based on one of their own personal photos done totally with the freehand tool (or sketch tool of any application provided they follow the rules)...and without importing any art...ie totally by eye....
The idea here is that the aim of the exercise is to help develop peoples use of vector as an art medium...instead of the more common methods we all know of using raster art as a background and doing tracings manually....
I would call it a "Freehand Frenzy" LOL....
The rules are:
- must be from own photography or photo....(to personalize it)
- art must not be inserted into the program (all reference to art to be by eye only...this is the whole point of this exercise)
- the only input tool allowed would be the freehand tool (or your program's sketch tool)
- no node editing, angle constriction or snapping allowed, (this is a freehand exercise)
- no moving of objects allowed (the idea is to get "sketchy" and build the picture up...like you would with a pencil on paper)
- as little deleting as possible (preferably no deleting objects...90% of all objects created must be at least partially visible in the finished design...
i.e the idea here is to encourage people to let loose and not worry about weather or not they are being EXACT...this is about free wild sketching and building the image up...
it is expected that perhaps people might sketch initially in a pale colour to feel out the image and get the proportions sorted and then start building the image up from there.....
Of course people would be allowed to use gradiated blends, transparency, feathering and blurring ETC...but any object that is created must be done manually with the freehand tool....
Thanks for your patience let me know what you think of...

Re: Freehand frenzy
Here is a submission for the challenge.
No photo reference, only my left hand as seen resting on the edge of my desk. Unless anyone knows something I'm unaware of it is impossible to get my hand inside the program to use as reference. :)
Sketched using a Wacom Graphire II and the Freehand and Brush Tool in Xara Xtreme. No edits so all the misplaced lines and accidentally closed shapes are still visible.

Here is my attempt. A couple of items that were lying on my desk.

Re: Freehand frenzy Challenge
zetland ungulate - drawn entirely from memory in xtreme - no erasing - limited myself to 5 minutes
freehand tool set at zero smoothing
freehand end hit-detect set at 1 [registry]
bottle of ink on escape key [:D]
this is a 'natural' pose for the pony as opposed to the cartoon style I usually do..
if time allows I'll do more...

Here is my contribution...
I have stopped work on it because the likeness is not good...
First effort....
You can see where I was going with the colour....
This is the type of workflow i would aspire to...
unfortunately im not quite up to speed or quality with it..early days...
im definitely going to attempt a few more...i want that likeness.....!!!!
i can usually get a decent likeness on paper if i really labour so i figure why not digitally....
i hope you all keep up the manual digital sketching (i think the payoffs after a few trys could be big)
Well see ....i probably spent 15 or 20 times as much time on mine as you guys...i really wanted it to work out,....
anyway i will definitely do one or 2 more....see if i cant get quicker and more accurate

Re: Freehand frenzy Challenge
I took the liberty of using imagination as reference here :) but i'll try to get some nice reference item/photo and post one more drawing here.
One can get lazy using all vector editing abilities that can correct any mistake, this is useful challenge to prevent that... and it's refreshing to draw differently :)
glass on escape key in my case :D

Re: Freehand frenzy Challenge
Excellent contributions all. I have to laugh at Mike's creation because my older brother drew those faces all the time. Mike, did you also burn model ships and army men and race slot cars?

Had to try this too. I had a horse when I was young and I drew her all the time. This is from memory.
The muzzle area is too big and the jaw too square and short but no deleting, right?
And just for grins I did this with my tablet and piece of paper taped to it. Really works pretty good but I have to rest my hand on the tablet. I can't hold it up like Handrawn suggests.
Here's the image...

Rotfl!!!! I love the expression in your fella's eyes...priceless.
And if a man can cook, I'll let him heat up things for me :D

it would be a privilege - but you'll have to do something about the lip strap first :p:D

Re: Freehand frenzy Challenge
horse people..........
im liking those sketches...
N.B instead of deleting you can do a preliminary scribble in light grey then go a bit darker once the proportions are down.....

Re: Freehand frenzy Challenge
like so?
manx horse window shopping - take 1
SUVEK - nice sketch that - imagination is where the best guidelines are [well that works for me anyhow] :)
MIKE - I often feel like that
BILL - I occasionally feel like putting my fist through the program/screen, but never on TG ....
FRANCES - nice one
RISTO - squirrels playing up again are they :D

I hated digital sketching when I first started - I still prefer the pencil and ink bottle, but a lot of that is because I need to see all the drawing clearly at once, full size; and because I think the line looks better reduced - but that's like as not a matter of opinion I am sure...
Keep at it it's looking good - practice is everything :)

Re: Freehand frenzy Challenge
yeah thanks...
i tried quickly to do a second one the other night and shortly there after deleted it in disgust....(twas appalling...)
Oh i feel i simply must post up my second ever finished xara design...
I was busily beavering away at something else and my daughter insisted that i draw sponge bob square pants!
P.S. I think im improving:)

Thank you very much Bob! :) The decanter was the second drawing so I guess it was always going to be slightly different to the first.
Re -the Egyptian houseboy: If only I could rub his little gold tummy, make a wish and get him to do the cooking or ironing instead! Grin..Oh well I can dream on huh! LOL

Re: Freehand frenzy Challenge
Michele, that is funny. I wouldn't mind a houseboy either :)
I really like the decanter but your houseboy is good. The more delicate strokes on the decanter give it a bit more sophistication.
-
Re: Freehand frenzy Challenge
That decanter is great Michele - is that a face I see reflected in the stopper, or just my imagination? :)

Yep, all that spare time could be spent creating more things with Xara! lol;)
Thanks Burpee I enjoyed your comments... but it was just a scribble and some of it joined up so thought I'd keep it as part of the appearance than try and just use strokes only. Pleased you liked it though, thanks again! :D

Love it....
The decanter especially impresses me...
I would love to see you put a back ground layer in there and add some "stained glass" colouring effect....
allot of feeling in your work...

Thanks morphonius! Is this what you would like to see?? :p
I'm sure someone else could probably come up with more variations of the stained glass look but this is it for now....I had fun with it though!
The mauve colour is a bit on the blurry side...it looked better as a xar file but you get the idea though...

Re: Freehand frenzy Challenge
I do like the middle one, Michele.
The one on the right might look better in a dark blue, like Bristol Glass.
As in the "something simple" thread by TimS where I posted a photo as an example.
Saludos,
Bob.

Re: Freehand frenzy Challenge
and I like the one on the left... nicely done Michele

Re: Freehand frenzy Challenge
The one on the right could be carved from Turkish Delight :D

Hi Bob, thanks for those comments!
Now that you've jogged my memory, I remember that post and mine is not going to come anywhere close to it! Grin.
Anyway here are a couple of blue bottles showing the lines thru the blue colour...no they're not jellyfish, Steve! :D
All the best

Thats great steve j, I liked that one too - I think it was the contrasting colours against the shadows that made it look somehow more solid perhaps.

:D Well I know what's on your mind Steve! :p Mmm the colour is similar to the turkish delight wrapper come to think of it. Grin. Wonder how that would go as a drink??
-
Re: Freehand frenzy Challenge
I like the blue ones a lot, Michele. I know this is dragging the purpose of the challenge a little further off topic than it already is, but now you are this far along the road,
you could give the blue and pink ones some highlights that would increase the glass effect and at the same time would reduce the Turkish Delight® or Jello® effects.
Saludos,
Bob.

The sketch to feel out the subject and then some colour to bring it to life.... well done...

Purrfeck't .. I like very much

Re: Freehand frenzy Challenge
tHATS GReat...my whole motivation in starting this thread was to see what people can do when they are forced not to trace...
Once the initial "gesture" sketch is done then the main aim of the exercise has been fulfilled (getting the proportions sorted without sketching) but that doesnt mean your design is completed.... a sketch is just a beginning and ultimately the most exciting part is seeing a cool sketchy design carried on to its inevitable conclusion...hot stuff

Re: Freehand frenzy Challenge
These are really very good, Michele, great illustrations.
I feel privileged to have been able to watch them grow.
Saludos,
Bob.

Re: Freehand frenzy Challenge
I agree it is great to see the illustrations carried through Michele - thanks :)
However - I am not an illustrator, I'm a freehand artist, and the freehand artist in me still prefers the left hand one post #28, because to me it has more the look of glass about it....
