No, step 9 is not live effects - the workbook was written in 2002 - and Xara Extreme started shipping only a week or so ago in 2005... ;)
2002 was also prior to the Xara Picture Editor introduced in Xara X1.
To accomplish the same thing using "Xara Picture Editor" (after you have created your bitmap).
Double-click the image to open XPE:
(1) The icon designated for colour - use it to remove the mentioned colour (make it gray scale)...
(2) The contrast (and brightness) sliders will also surprisingly adjust the mentioned things... The result will be the same.
Not sure about the "progress bar" - running X1 on the machine I'm sittting at.
well this issue isnt about workbook 03 just so you know i may have found a bug.
RonC
--- Fair enough... However, it's still related to workbook 3. Seeing what you were trying to do will help others to try it out - and report it (if it's indeed a bug - can't try it myself).Quote:

im sorry but you want me to compile every little potential bug that I'm finding and do a huge post of it? Do you think people will want to read that?
If thats what you want sure ill do it. im just saying as a reference point I was working on workbook 03, it didn't mean necessarily I'm "misunderstanding" the tutorials, it merely came about as I was doing the workbooks. I guess I misunderstood, you want me to compile all of my completely separate (automatic object grouping, xara picture editor error) issues to one post then?
im sorry it just seems like youre not even reading my posts fully.

As someone else put it about being "led by the nose" in your last tutorial request thread... Too many "cry wolf" - and people will stop paying attention. Too many "requests for this and that" - without posting anything showing that you are doing anything with the help (or attempts at it) you are getting - and people will stop paying attention.
In your case, I would venture to say - yes, please do complie "all your" potential bugs in to one thread... If they are indeed real bugs - they will be confirmed and forwarded.
ok thanks and sorry
(im not asking to be led by the nose btw, its hopefully obvious in my posts)

Right, I'm glad someone else has noticed this. I noticed it a long time ago, however it was affecting just my home computer (but not another of my computers). I've been discussing it with Xara, and because we couldn't find the cause, and it was affecting only me, there was nothing that could be done. Is anyone else suffering this problem? I suspect it's related to the users system hardware. Can you test for me please whether the stubborn progress bar does not disappear when you do the following:Quote:

It's very annoying for me. It happens also when the XPE (internal version) is opened by double clicking a photo in Xara.
Could you also tell me what hardware you have (eg graphics card in particular, chip etc)?
im running a64 3000+, 1.5gb ram, 480gb of 3 hd's, geforce6200 w/ latest geforce drivers
Also im getting refresh issues here and there...
of course its the bought cd version

Xhris;
I tried that sequence on my work computer, and no progress bar showed up. The adjustments took effect in real time, just like they're supposed to. Unfortunately, I don't know what the hardware configuration is.
Glen
tried it out on my laptop it works fine... i will try it on my desktop in my studio when i get home tonight again to see if it works
RonC
Couldn't reproduce your bug Xhris, but I can reproduce a similar bug any time I wish.
1. Create a rectangle.
2. Arrange / Create bitmap Copy
3. Select bitmap copy / Double click to open Xara Picture Editor.
4. Without touching / changing anything else, the progress bar appears.
I'm using a D/L version. I haven't installed the CD version yet.
Egg
yup thats the one
RonC
Egg, I tried what you have described on my laptop with the CD version of Xtreme, and no progress bar showed up. Again, I'm not sure what the hardware configuration is.
Glen
Hi,
Without knowing what every one computer configuration is I tried to duplicatethe scenerio in question and some extra of my own and I don't get progress bar on any effect I use, from the installed plugins I have.
I am running AMD64 prcessor with 1gB memry, 256MB graphic accelerator, 2000+ GH machine. I have no progress bar on anything.
Maybe progress bar is for memry swapping while effect is being applied, and if there is enough onboard memory swap file is not needed therefore no progress bar.
Jim
i tried it and i do not get a progress bar, tried it Eggs way also and no progress bar. xtreme cd version.
my computer is a p4 2.4ghz 512ram 256mb ati radeon 9250
i have 1.5gb ram so your idea is definately not gonna work in my instance ;)Quote:

A machine with large amount of installed RAM may have little available RAM depending on what is loaded into memory at startup and what programs are open.
Desktop Wallpaper, the number of Icons on the desktop, animated cursors, hardware drivers, and utilities all take away from Available Physical Memory. I have some old 500 MHz machines with 128MB RAM that out perform newer 2.3 GHz machines with 2GB of RAM because they don't load a lot of extra files and programs.
Maybe I should be a bit clearer about the situation with my computers. I have two computers that are virtually identical. The only major difference is the graphics card. Hardware specifics might not be the cause though. My home computer suffers from this bug, but my other computer doesn’t. Both have the same version of Xara installed, and the bug persists with uninstalls/reinstalls. This bug is preventing easy use of Xara LE’s through either the LE tool or the XPE, and is annoying. That other people see the progress bar suggests that the problem is now not localised to just me.
One thing I would still like to know from people is not just whether the progress bar appears and remains, but whether or not changes are shown in real time when using the LE tool’s bump map or enhance features. When using the XPE instead, some changes are reflected in real time, others aren’t (such as the blur/sharpness control). Only when closing dialogue boxes do all changes get shown – i.e. it becomes trial and error – not very Xara like. Furthermore, there is also a currently unresolved crash bug associated with closing LE dialogue boxes, and so having to close them repeatedly to see changes due to this bug often incites a crash.
I got time today to instal the CD version. Gave it a try and the bug's still there.
Egg
I can't get that bug to be a bug over here. All is fine.:o

Using LE BumpMap - Progress Bar appears, but does nothing. Any alterations not reflected in the selected bitmap. An hour glass icon is running when moused over the LE Window. Alterations are only visible on closing window.
I can confirm this as well.Quote:

Haven't had any crashes as yet.

My picture editor enhancing effects of a bitmap are happening in real time - all four of them. All is fine.

I was just reading in the manual about locked versus unlocked effects. Is it possible those of you having problems might have it locked?

Xhris and Egg, I can not get a progress bar to appear following either of your procedures.
I did have a lot of fun trying though. Finally just threw together a few items with Live Effects.
No Drifter, that has no effect whatsoever. Egg
This is a rare kind of bug that I am going to struggle to find the cause of alone. It simply is, without procedural cause. I think only by sharing info between who has it and who doesn't could a cause become clear.
I find this one interesting. I don't used XPE often, mostley because if is very slow. If I apply almost any plugin filter I get the dorment progress bar. I usually wait a while and then click the check mark to accept (blind) and in another 10 to 30 seconds (a Loooonnng time) the change is made. Many times it is quicker to exit XARA and use Photo Shop where I can see what I am doing and then import.
I guess XARA will improve it over time.

I have the same problem :(
Any solution?
Just downloaded trial. Opened a jpg and double clicked on it. Photo editor opened with a dead progress bar across the photo. Nothing happens by clicking on enhance, the dead progress bar stays, photo does not enhance.
Only way out is to close window. Running xp Pro with all current updates, sp2, plenty of ram, nVidia graphics card. Certainly can't consider buying the program unless this problem can be fixed.
I have de Xara Xtreme CD version, and this problème is new :(
I have my XP updated, pack 2, enough ram and Ati Radeon Pro.
Xara never have thise problème before some days :( Grrr
I have just downloaded the trial version and I am experiencing this same problem. Here is what is happening:
1. Draw a rectangle.
2. Fill it with something from the fill gallery.
3. Select the plugins tool.
4. Select New and bumpmap.
5. The bumpmap dialog opens. At this point everything is OK.
6. Once I touch a setting in the dialog, the progress bar appears over the image but under the dialog box.
7. When I adjust a setting it is not simultaneously updated in the image.
8. When the dialog box is closed the progress bar disappears and the effects are applied to the image.
9. Select the edit button on the info bar. The dialog box appears with the settings that I made previously.
10. As soon as I touch a setting the effects that I had made previously in the image disappear and it is returned to its original state, even though the settings in the dialog box haven't moved.
11. The progress bar appears and again the settings are not being applied until the box is closed.
The above still occurs even if step 2 is omitted or if I import a jpeg instead of drawing a rectangle.
I am using Windows XP SP2, 1.7GHz centrino, 1.5GB ram, about 40GB free space on the HD, nVideo GeForce 6200 on a Toshiba tablet pc.
I can't repeat this either.
I'm using W2K Pro SP4 with a Matrox Millenium G450

I have noticed something interesting regarding this issue. For those that are affected by the idle progress bar, please could you try the following? Put a very large photo in Xara (e.g. the one attached). Either using the live effects, or XPE, select auto enhance for example. For me, instead of a blank idling progress bar, a valid progress bar appears showing you the progress, before disappearing when done, and updating the image. It could be that the bug might be caused by Xara’s own speed. With small (normal) photos, it could be that Xara completes the operations before the progress bar has shown up, and thus isn’t told to go away. Whereas with big photos, Xara is effectively slowed down, so the bar appears before the operations finish, and thus is told to go away and image updated. Does this happen for others?
Hi Xhris
I can confirm that this happens to me exactly as you describe above.
However I can reproduce 2 different behaviours.
1: If I import your image, select it & right click over it I get a correctly functioning progress bar, which closes on completion.
However if I double click the image:
2: XPE opens and as soon as my mouse hovers over the AutoEnhance icon I get a blank progress bar constantly visible that does nothing on selection of AutoEnhance.
It's as though XaraXtreme was launching 2 diferent programs. In fact I wonder if this isn't exactly what it is doing, perhaps launching an older version from somewhere?

I need someone's help! I have purchased every Xara software I think they've ever made and always purchased any upgrades, especially Xara 1 and so on. After getting my CD for Xara Xtreme, it worked just fine, until my hard drive suddenly crashed for no apparent reason on a 2 year old drive that was well taken care of. Now I had a brand new hard drive installed and suddenly my Xara Xtreme software will not work correctly. It will do everything else, but when I try to enhance a photo, I too get the frozen progress bar. It freezes forever without ever unfreezing. Right now, I cannot even do anything with my photos and my customers are most impatient waiting for their work. PLEASE SOMEONE HELP ME FIGURE OUT A FIX. Let me know if I have not given enough info for this.
After you fitted the new HD, did you restore a disc image or did you re-install all the programs separately once more?
Does Xara work if you eliminate the filter effects? (Utilities/Options/Effects and Plugins). Do you have any custom fills installed at all? If so, have you tried removing them?
Have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling Xara?
Dave
in the meantime use the gimp google it

I recently built a new PC (a monster!). But different components came at different times. When my new LCD monitor arrived, I hooked it up to my old computer. I immediately noticed that in Xara, the progress bar issue was solved, and didn't occur anymore. So I tried plugging my old CRT monitor back in and the progress bar issue started again. So it seems that the monitor you use has direct affect on it - which I don't understand.
Both monitors used the analogue connection. But what's confusing is that my office computer uses the exact same CRT monitor (make & model) as my old home PC, and no progress bar issue occured there. I'd be interested to hear what suspicions people have about this finding, inc. the Xara development team. Maybe people can try plugging in different monitor types and see what happens.
