Xara 3d Maker; Blender or Sketchup?
Hi everyone,
I am slowly getting into 3d modelling. I first wanted to go with Xara 3d maker, as I read that it is really simple to use but I also got a recommendation of blender and sketchup. Does anyone of you have any experience with these and can tell me if they work out well for a newbie like me?
Thanks a lot!

Re: Xara 3d Maker; Blender or Sketchup?
Xara 3D Maker is not really a 3D design application. It does create 3D items but Blender and Sketchup are dedicated 3D creation applications where you can actually build 3D objects. That said, in the past some of the members managed to create some very complex 3D objects. Here is a link to a tutorial of one of the better ones http://archive.xaraxone.com/guest/guest97/index.html

Re: Xara 3d Maker; Blender or Sketchup?
Hi Mike,
It all depends on what you want to create, there a lot of tools available.
3d programs usually have a steep learning curve.
Could you be a little more specific on what you would like to do ?

Re: Xara 3d Maker; Blender or Sketchup?
Gary is correct. It depends upon what you want to do. I've used SketchUp. Two versions, one free the other $500+. The free version is quite adequate as the paid version mostly includes accounting capabilities. The real appeal of SketchUp is the vast YouTube instruction available. Before making a decision, investigate the community help available in forums, including YouTube. Let us know what you decide. Dan

Thanks everyone, I decided to give the free version of sketchup a try as I saw, as you mentioned danfleix, that they got some really nice video tutorials.

As others have said. it depends on what you want to do. I have an Architectural delineator friend that uses google Sketchup free version.,

Re: Xara 3d Maker; Blender or Sketchup?
I'm also thinking to improve and polish my 2D design skill into 3D modeling. I searched on tools for that, Xara 3D Maker is one of cool tool that I found and interested to go with that.

Re: Xara 3d Maker; Blender or Sketchup?
Hi Xara Graphic Designer can export SVG file which can then be imported to some 3d applications. Idon't believe that Xara 3D designer
exports in 3d application formats, I use tinkercad for my 3d design...but I am a novice..

Hi,
Xara 3D Maker is not a 3D modelling program. It makes extrusions of 2D objects, mainly text, and animates it.

Re: Xara 3d Maker; Blender or Sketchup?
In my opinion Sketchup is much easier to use than is Blender although Blender has a few pluses not found otherwise such as the ocean simulator.

Here is my Family crest drwn in Xara and exported as SVG files and modeled in Tinkercad

Re: Xara 3d Maker; Blender or Sketchup?
Blender3d is extremely powerful and complex compared to either Xara 3d Maker or Sketchup. While Sketchup can be used professionally for certain architectural designs, Blender has been proven to be useful for VFX, ArchViz, Animation and many other aspects of 3d. I think Xara 3d Maker would be a good starter package if you're just looking for some basic 3d effects, especially to do with text animation or logos. The other two go much deeper into the 3d world, which may or may not be what you need. Personally, I use Autodesk 3dsmax as my daily driver, but I also make use of Blender on a regular basis. For example, I tend to use the Eevee render engine in Blender for almost all my animation need now. Reason being, it's a real-time render engine that uses PBR to make things look extremely realistic, which is perfect marriage of speed and quality for animations. Sketchup is a much different animal when it comes to everything from modeling to rendering. It's very specific in the sense of how it handles geometry and how you need to learn to design objects. I prefer to model with polygons, so Sketchup isn't really my cup of tea.

Re: Xara 3d Maker; Blender or Sketchup?
I dabble into 3D but not a great deal. I've used SketchUp and Cinema3D plus Blender.
However I find the latest release of Blender 2.8 far more intuitive than previous release and really enjoying experimenting with it. The inclusion of the Eevee renderer is fantastic.

Re: Xara 3d Maker; Blender or Sketchup?
I looked into the the newest Blender due out next month, and it looks to be awesome. So you may want to look into that.

Actually, I know that Xara can export a 2D shape as a DXF file, and I can import DXF into Wings 3D (and I'm certain many other 3D programs too), which you can then extrude using 3D tools. You cannot really do more than extrude it though, as the outer shape is retained but the geometry of the plans are cut bizarrely, but I have gotten it to work. The logo on top and text was created that way in the following image - rendered in Vue Creator.

Re: Xara 3d Maker; Blender or Sketchup?
I talked to my friend about Google Sketch up. and according to him the free version no longer has the nice trees ans stuff. In order to get that evidently you may have to pay out the nose for the really good stuff. If have looked into the newest Blender and it looks to be awesome.

I am pretty sure that you cannot
it is not on the xdpx export list
you could run a vector export file [svg? pdf?] through third party software to convert

Re: Xara 3d Maker; Blender or Sketchup?
No, Xara can't export DXF ... However, if you save it as a PDF and import it into INKSCAPE, Inkscape CAN export as DXF

Re: Xara 3d Maker; Blender or Sketchup?
Agree. @Steve & @Keith
I just wanted to see how this proclaimed 3D poster would respond.
Regards to both of you..;)
-
Re: Xara 3d Maker; Blender or Sketchup?
thanks Keith - would that be any better than just exporting svg I wonder for 3D modelling in wings or blender even - I've always thought of DXF as being more of a CAD/CAM or Plotter/Cutter format ...

Thanks Gamerprinter. I thought you had made a discovery.

Re: Xara 3d Maker; Blender or Sketchup?
At one time, I started with Xara X. It's a convenient product of its kind, easy, and you can figure it out quickly. All the settings and tools are always available, editing points convenient, and you can quickly change the colors, as in a full fill and gradients. To make a transparent transition between an object and the background is a trifle. And objects can be visually duplicated when scaling. But for more complex work, I now work with Blender. Although it is more powerful and complex than Xara, I learned how to use https://forgehub.net (free 3d models) from Nebula. And now, Eevee in Blender 2.8 is a pleasure to work with.

As a newbie, you are not allowed non-xara links but I have exposed yours this time as it is one I have used too.
Thank you for your contribution.
