Getting Rid of the Simplitec PUP
How can I get rid of the Simplitec PUP. I've run RogueKiller, AdwCleaner and Malwarebytes, but when I run RogueKiller later down the road, Simplitec shows up again. I know I mistakenly installed it with Xara Designer, but there must be a way to get rid of it.
Anyone know how to do this?

Hi Steve,
I'm sorry, I should have mentioned that that was the first thing I tried. It was on the list of programs and I did uninstall it. It no longer shows up in "Programs and Features" list. That's when I went to the malware programs to try and get rid of it.
-
Re: Getting Rid of the Simplitec PUP
sure ron... so you unlinstalled it in programs and features - therefore I assume it's not showing in your list of programs on the start menu, and if you type simplitec into the windows 10 search nothing runs?
if so then what your malware programs are reporting may just be an untidy registry - never used simplitec, but it's not malware just [in my opinion] unnecessary

Re: Getting Rid of the Simplitec PUP
Ron, if you use Control Panel\Programs\Programs and Features then that should have removed it.
I installed it once, for a laugh, and it was cleanly removed.
Was it running as the time of your uninstall?
It might not go until you have Restarted.
Does it still have content in a folder under C:\Program Files (x86)\ or C:\Program Files\?
I use CCleaner as described in this article: https://www.online-tech-tips.com/com...om-add-remove/

Re: Getting Rid of the Simplitec PUP
done a quick google - there seem to be some reports of simplitec being reported as a PUP infection with Rouguekiller, but it might be a false positive; a lot of legit programs can show patterns that look suspicious on the surface... especially those that work on the system level
-
Re: Getting Rid of the Simplitec PUP
... remember a PUP is a 'potentially unwanted program' that is not the same as an actual dangerous one...
-
Re: Getting Rid of the Simplitec PUP
Malwarebytes is very good with removing these. For some reason Chrome installs a lot of .pup and I have stopped using Chrome.
-
Re: Getting Rid of the Simplitec PUP
Thanks Acorn, Steve and Gary.
I use CCleaner and Malwarebytes nearly every day, including a monthly CCleaner registry clean.
I think that maybe Steve hit on it with the False/Positive in RogueKiller. Because that's the program that continually displays the PUP files.
Anyway, I am in the process of implementing each of the suggested procedures, appreciatively!
Thanks again, everyone.

Re: Getting Rid of the Simplitec PUP
as far as I know a .pup file is a sony playstation file ;)
if chrome is 'letting/facilitating' PUP file installion it would not suprise me - that's google's way [I don't care for the chrome browser either]

Re: Getting Rid of the Simplitec PUP
Well,
What browser do you all use? I've always liked Chrome for web surfing, but if there is a less problematic browser out there I'd like to know which one is recommended by my associates here.
-
Re: Getting Rid of the Simplitec PUP
ah there's a can of worms... :D
I certainly wouldn't say chrome was a bad browser, certainly not bad enough not to use; any more than I would say don't use google search, although duckduckgo is a good alternative [I think you use that Gary?]
All the major windows search engines browsers: Edge, IE, FireFox, Chrome are good, although IE is effectively depricated by MS so it should be phased out
What it boils down to it how you use them - do you want them to work out of the box, or do you want to customise them so they behave in a way you prefer? - out of the box use any of them [except IE] - you will pay a price in terms of privacy and putting up with ads ... but everything has it's price - which ever you prefer
So chrome is fine if you want to use a browser out of the box; the reason I don't care for it is because it is far harder to customise the way I like than Firefox which is my main browser

Re: Getting Rid of the Simplitec PUP
I didn't appreciate the deep interaction Google has in Opera: http://laptopmedia.com/highlights/th...rfox-vs-opera/.
I use Opera when I want to not be snooped on as it has in-built VPN. In such occasions, speed is not important.

Re: Getting Rid of the Simplitec PUP
opera is not the same since it lost its independance - but it is still there and if you need a free VPN that is certainly a good point... although not sure I would want to use a free one.....

Re: Getting Rid of the Simplitec PUP
So, duckduckgo is really an add-on to Chrome, not an actual stand-alone browser?
-
Re: Getting Rid of the Simplitec PUP
duckduckgo is a search engine, not a browser - sorry if I caused confusion there....
-
Re: Getting Rid of the Simplitec PUP
I used to opera and loved it. Switched to firefox and used that for a long time, however I like and use speed dial and that no longer works with firefox, a lot of things don't since they changed it, so I switched back to opera. I must admit though that opera is no longer the same easy to use browser I liked. I tried Chrome but that was not for me.

Re: Getting Rid of the Simplitec PUP
Thanks for the clarification, Steve.
No you did just fine. I'm just very slow.

George,
THANKS!
I think that article you referred me to might have done. I searched to see if there was any traces of Simplitec on my hard drive. There wasn't. However, after I ran the "Registry Cleaner" in CCleaner and then rebooted, I haven't seen the Simplitec PUPs after running Malwarebytes or RogueKiller.
So, this is hoping in future scans it doesn't appear anymore.

Ron, now you are on top, have a look at DuckDuckGo or StartPage for your web searches.

Try Vivaldi. Made by the original Opera developer. It's my daily browser.

I spoke too soon.
After rebooting my computer, the "simplitec" came back. I read an article written to RogueKiller personel and the bottom line is, they don't know right now how to get rid of it, although they say it is harmless.
Oh well.
Thanks for your help, George.

Re: Getting Rid of the Simplitec PUP
DuckDuckGo.com You can specify this as your default search engine. The benefit to this is DuckDuckGo does not save your searches and does not feed you search results based on your previous searches and it does not follow you around the web. DuckDuckGo does not own YouTube or DoubleClick and more. IOW they have no dog in the fight. If you search for something on DuckDuckGo, you will not see the item you searched for on your next web page or on Facebook. I only use Google if I am searching for images and cannot find what I am looking for on DuckDuckGo. It is my default search engine.

StarPage is also useful, it searches Google for you and doesn't keep your search history.

Re: Getting Rid of the Simplitec PUP
Useful discussion on browsers and search tools (to which I have contributed, mea culpa), However, it's tangential to the thread topic, so let's take the browser/search discussion to an Off-topic Chat thread here:

Re: Getting Rid of the Simplitec PUP
I also use Opera as my standard browser. I really liked the prototype Opera Neon, but it crashes on my home desktop, and there will not be a update, so I don't use it any more.
Haven't come across Vivaldi before (thanks, Mike) but I'll definitely check it out.
-
Re: Getting Rid of the Simplitec PUP
Wonderful ...
Having spent the last 1/2hr. playing with Vivaldi, it's now set as my default browser. Seems slick and fast ... I like it a lot.
Thank you Mike for pointing it out.

I have moved this to Off Topic Chat where I think it is more appropriate.
