Gare's Non-Xara Artwork, Vol. 3
Kate, please let me know when the server is running out of space, please.
Attachment 118987
This is a piece of personal retouching using P'shop. No 3rd party filters. The way I got the exposure up is to convert the pic to 16 bits per pixel so major adjustments would fit into the =gamma of the pic without clipping. Then I used the Exposure command, not Levels, not Curves.

Dubloons
These are a historically accurate render of doubloons, not pieces of eight and not your archetypal Pirates of the Caribbean doubloons which were made from silver.
These are replicas of gold doubloons used in Mexico and Spain. It tool about a month to sculpt them from detailed bitmaps of both sides, and then I just duplicated them to make the scene.

I have twin cousins, Debby and Darlene—
so it was just a matter of changing the text in Xara to address both congratulations. :)
Modeled and rendered with modo 701. Cupcake texture is a Painting I applied as a texture pre-rendering.

Script fonts for soda or beer will work, but use your imagination! I've included a swash for you in the Xara file. I used Ballpark Franks.otf, which is free in you look around your favorite font resource.

CFT bulbs contain mercury. But not Venus
It's just stunning how short the life of the CFT was/is. Incandescents were still sold when the CFTs came out and the cool white made everyone look like a corpse.
So I salute the short-lived but long-life Fluorescent bulb.

Gare,
The guitar pic is awesome.... Would look good displayed on a wall.
The bulbs look just like a photo, I can't tell the difference.
Just amazing.

Here is a photo I took of the house after getting the decorations out. Retouching in Photoshop; you can't taske a realy good night time picture with available light. Because there isn't any.
Then Filter Forge for a little texturing.

Thanks, Ron. I've always enjoyed the somewhat cliché but charming snow scenes around this time of year.It becomes that much more personal when it's your home in the picture, you know?
By the way, the blue window top right is my drawing room. No idea why it's casting blue. He is the room the other way around.

PinPress your friends!
P R O L O G
I worked with Paul Howard, another Art Director at Ted Bates back in 1976, Paul is the son of Moe Howard, the undisputed head of the 3 Stooges. Paul would stick his head on the photocopy platen along with a cut-out speech balloon. Like father like son.
Perhaps more interesting than copying your face is creating a low-res 3D sculpture of your face.
Ward Fleming originally created and patented Pin Art, AKA Pin Screen™ in 1976, then marketed in 1980, originally larger than knock-offs today. A signed original goes for $60 on eBay, I think it was about $35 when it first came out. Metal pins were changed to plastic because it was too heavy in metal. Today, knock-offs in plastic (under the name of PinPressions), is about $3 at Target for a 4 by 6, seasonal, Christmas gift.
To honor this toy—and to give Christmas a little honor (!) — this is the last piece of art I've created before The Holidays, and probably for the year.

Re: Is the plural of Cactus Cacti?
Thank you, Ron. Even when I was using markers and other physical media, my goal was to create photorealistic compositions, such as this chrome heat note (this is a modern version, modeled):
Attachment 120324
I think humans—and some insects (!) are naturally attracted to bright, shiny objects. And one of the first things modeling and rendering programmers learned how to do is create reflective surfaces. Too much so; if you look at early animation in the early 1970s, everything reflections, and looks unnatural for it.
Hopefully, there's enough mild, not overdone reflections and some non-reflective texture in the LoveNote image to make the audience stare just a moment or two more than without well-done textures and lighting.
Because it sure as heck isn't photorealistic!
My Best,
Gary

Re: Is the plural of Cactus Cacti?
Well, Gare...
As well as my failing hearing and memory, I guess my eyes are worse than I thought, because it looks very realistic to me. Of course, when I post something on TG, thinking that it's ready to show, I find out there's a lot of things wrong with my work. I attempt photo-realism, at times, but, never seem to quite get there. Still a goal for me.
The work you put out is to me, truly amazing. I always think to myself, "MAN! How does he do that!?

Re: Is the plural of Cactus Cacti?
You are to kind, Ron. But please keep it up! Attachment 120330
I've long avoided the term "realistic", because although it's a trivial difference, the point was made with me by a painting done by Reneé Magritte. The title? "Ce n'est pas un pipe." "This is not a pipe", although clearly the painting is that of a pipe.
What he was saying in a Puckish manner is that the work is not a pipe. It's a painting of a pipe.
Similarly, nothing I've ever done is realistic, including my Federal taxes.
It can be like a photo, photo-realistic, but realistic is a hurdle maybe artists won't reach until holographic tools are affordable. It might be easy to mistake a rendered model as a photo, but rarely the person sitting next to you on a bus, for example.
'Til then, you should enjoy your photorealistic drawings, as I do with your work, Ron.

Okay, I confess that I'm a gringo, and my idea of authentic Mexican cuisine is Taco Bell's 3 Crunchy Tacos Supreme® Combo, medium soft drink.

Hey, Ron, I'm not happy with the composition; Gary P. has been of great help in the past bringing all my elements together for me; Cinco de Mayo is only a few days away, and I wanted this piece off my drawing table (euphemistically) and displayed somewhere.
Gary P. helped me out with this one, which was printed in the Official Guide:

A photograph, for sure.
I’m kind of bothered by the change of shading in the foreground; that is, the sand’s shading.
However, there is very little that I inderstand.

I'm not thrilled with that area, either, Ron. It was the color difference between wet and dry sand. I came close, but not perfectly, to matching the tones.
Good call!

Gare - I really like that story. It reminded me that the work of Canadian painter >> Alex Colville << has been described as "Magic Realism". The idea is his paintings embody a rare emotional quotient that energizes them beyond just technically rendering scenes with high realism. His paintings aren't photographic in character, instead they have a kind of realism that reminds me of something we'd feel in a dream state - where we wake up without resolution of the plot of the dream
I bring that up because I find a theme in your work that transcends the technical realism you achieve. That theme of course is your unique humoristic bent that seems to enfuse almost all you create. It brings a joyness most photoreal illustration does not achieve. From your audience I want to stand up and join the ovation and thank you. =D>=D>=D>=D>=D>
