xaralx and slackware not working properly?
i installed xaralx a couple different ways, first i downloaded a tgz.for slack, and the gui came up for xara but with no template.so i opened the template folder and selected the portrait template.what i got was this;an error occured(file does not exist)when opening the file a4.this happens with all templates.so obvious ly i cant use xara!
i also down loaded the autopackage and ran it successfully.but i get the same error?
now heres the kicker it used to work!but now it doesnt?slack is stable and usually i can run just about anything.im using kde 3.9 and using the stable version of xaralx.
ver..7rev16.im baffled cause it used to work.does anyone have some answers or ideas on how i can fix this?any help would be highly appreciated!!!!!

Re: xaralx and slackware not working properly?
Rick what has changed on your system?
Did you install a new release of slackware?
Is the correct version of wxwidgets installed?
How about the C/C++ versions?
I do not recall all the dependencies for XaraLX and the program has not been updated for over a year. Newer versions of any of the dependencies can break the performance of XaraLX.

Re: xaralx and slackware not working properly?
i believe i installed wx gtk,wich has wxwidgets1.8(i think)basically i installed,libmspack,cairo,pango,atk,glib2.0,just to get wx gtk to compile.
as for whats different im not exactly sure, ive installed alot of dependencies for other programs.im using slack 12.1,and this is a new installation,i had to reinstall after some really bad commands.i used all newer dependencies,so maybe thats the problem.
i dunno,im completely lost. as for the c++ ihave the standard gcc,and cmake that came with slack.

Re: xaralx and slackware not working properly?
XaraLX has not been updated so any of those changes could cause the program to no longer work.
Hopefully one of our members that uses Linux will be along with some more helpful information.
I removed linux from my systems some time ago, so I cannot make any tests.

Re: xaralx and slackware not working properly?
well ok.thanx,i also got this message when starting xara from the commandline;
xaralx:24630): Gtk-CRITICAL **: gtk_window_move: assertion `GTK_IS_WINDOW (window)' failed
maybe its a gtk problem?

Re: xaralx and slackware not working properly?
Rick I think that error is due to a newer version of the GTK+ and it does not recognise a subroutine call being made by XaraLX.
It is possible the routine is named differently in the new version or that it requires different types of parameters to be passed than the older version LX is calling.

Re: xaralx and slackware not working properly?
Have you gone through and checked that all deps for Xaralx are there in your new install?
check for WxWidgets lib
and the WxXtra lib

Re: xaralx and slackware not working properly?
i think your right!what ill do is uninstall the newer version of gtk and install an older version, ill have to find the page i found and didnt bookmark on installing xaralx.
ill have to probably redo the dependencies-prereqisits.i think ill look it up and just try gtk first.thanks for the info!!!
Rick:)

Re: xaralx and slackware not working properly?
Of course, if a newer gtk+ version is being used, you could either change the version to call within the spec file and repackage it or ask one of slacks devs to look into it

Re: xaralx and slackware not working properly?
Hi,
running slackware-current here...had to remove openoffice to get xaralx to run. I installed using the instructions I posted on this forum some months ago.

Re: xaralx and slackware not working properly?
Wow, that's odd... So what is it about the latest OOo that effects XaraLX? Not a huge surprise as I recall when I was trying to upgrade to the prior to last release of InkScape, a warning came up that ImageMagik would be removed...
So, I imagine the problem with the newer OOo is maybe to do with the graphics areas?
It gets difficult sometimes, when some apps are upgraded by it's devs, and others are not, and they begin to create conflict in the middle like this
BTW, thanks for the heads up Con

Re: xaralx and slackware not working properly?
When starting Xaralx I got this error msg telling me OpenOffice-impress.desktop couldnt be found and then Xaralx segfaulted. I downloaded the OOo package from linuxpackages.net, I think it was a bad package since I dont see any reason why OOo would affect Xaralx.
Also Xaralx, .tar.bz2 package atleast, is statically linked (libs are compiled into binary) so it shouldnt have any dependecies.
-
Re: xaralx and slackware not working properly?
Strange.... So, you are not able to have XaraLX and OOo on the same system then? You're absolutely right, neither should be effecting the other.
I'm gonna see what I can find about this... cuz now I'm stummped :P

Re: xaralx and slackware not working properly?
from what I see so far... it might be related to OOo's "xml draw" feature.
xml draw-impress.desktop, (there is also templates impress.desktop)
so... xml libs might have a conflict? libxml xx
-
Re: xaralx and slackware not working properly?
Yup... XaraLX depends on libxml2... which at the same time breaks OpenOffice
Wonderful....
Gonna have to find a fix for this one;)
Well, at least there is KOffice for KDE users

Re: xaralx and slackware not working properly?
Hey Con... Here is a Deb mailing list where a solution was found, involves getting into the OOo build though, need to change the version it's looking for.
It should be the same across the board (not just for deb);)
http://www.mail-archive.com/debian-u...msg494437.html
Hope that helps.

Re: xaralx and slackware not working properly?
You know, I'm glad I don't use Linux ;).... Just following this thread makes me realise how little I know about it.:o Sometimes, I'm not even sure you people are even talking English.:D Good luck with the fix.:)

Re: xaralx and slackware not working properly?
Sorry for all the running posts... but, here is a link to follow the reported bug from the beginning to end.
http://lists.alioth.debian.org/piper...er/003412.html
I guess it is safe to say either way, that the problem with running XaraLX and OOo together lies within the libxml2, and the core of it is in OOo needing to be looking for libxml2
If anyone finds this incorrect, please let me know so we can dig more. Thanks

hehe.. Thanks Keith... (I think):D
Actually, it's not at all as bad as it looks. The biggest plus here is... "when it's broke... we can just do some research, then get into the software and fix it";) And not have to spend countless hours on the phone with a tech support personnel who often seem to know even less than the person who's calling for help does:p

Re: xaralx and slackware not working properly?
I'd like to know how rixtr66 is getting along though?? I think his problem might be somewhat related... but to the templates.desktop in OOo

You dont know how right you are.....
Thanks for looking into this issue, when I got the problem I didnt have the energy to look for any other solution than removing OOo...used XaraXtreme on windows for a while, damn that 3d function is sweet(!). But there's just something about Xaralx that makes me more creative, dont know why..

Try 0.7rev1785 if I remember correctly, I could be wrong, there were some patches added to it long ago (and oh so far away(sry couldnt resist:))) to make it work with some stuff that changed in some lib or something.
EDIT: Just tested 1692 and it works. Could you start xaralx from the commandline and post the output here?

Re: xaralx and slackware not working properly?

xaralx now works fine!!

Re: xaralx and slackware not working properly?
Corrupted? How does that happen? Been using linux for 6+ yrs and well...I've only seen corrupted Windows installs in that time. :D
-
Re: xaralx and slackware not working properly?
...and especially of all distros... Slack corrupt? Odd.
Well, glad it has worked out in the end for you. Stick around though... it's nice to have a fellow XaraLX fan around;)
