What I'd like to see in Web Designer
A bit premature I know but rather than having umpteen threads about what you'd like to see in Web Designer, perhaps you could include them here so Xara have one compact place to see what customers are after. Ok I'll start.
• To right click on an object and 'lock' that particular object from being edited. I'm aware that you can turn off layers from being edited but not 1 particular object on that layer, for example a rectangle covering the page.
• When right clicking in text mode, the ability to 'Select All' text.
:)

Ctrl+A shall help you. And is faster than right click + menu option select. ;)

Re: What I'd like to see in Web Designer
I'm VERY happy with the result here. I swear I've had dreams about how this would work since the days of Frontpage and they've finally come true through XWD!!
I would like to have my .web file upload to the ftp site along with the rest of the site. They're typically not large files and it would make the file available at the next computer i go to.
So if I work from home and upload my site, then go to work and somehow be able to download my .web file.
Right now I ftp and upload the .web file for editing where I go next.
Also, I'd like to be able to click / right-click for color selection. -maybe I missed that.
OOH!! And the shapes tool would be cool to have as well - starbursts & the like :)

Place your web file inside the "files" folder (named like "index_htm_files" that is createl alongside the exported index.htm file for example) and it will be upload with all the other files.

THIS is why I love Xara.
That's right - I said it :)
Thanks John!!

Re: What I'd like to see in Web Designer
Being able to import existing websites would be good, or is that already there?

I don't believe you'll find a WYSIWYG web designer that could do that, anywhere. The problem of parsing and translating arbitrary HTML/CSS code into the local proprietary format used by all such programs is, I believe, well nigh unsolvable--at least at the affordable level.
-
Re: What I'd like to see in Web Designer
Being able to import existing websites is close to impossible I'm afraid. In order to do that we'd have to interpret the HTML, CSS, Javascript and create a layout that is an exact replication of what a web browser does. In effect that IS a Web browser. And since the likes of Microsoft, Netscape/Mozillla (Firefox), Opera have been struggling to produce a reliable or compatible browsers for 10 years or more, this is just not practical.
So while it would be truly great to be able to load existing websites and edit them, I can't see it happening in the foreseeable future.

Re: What I'd like to see in Web Designer
For XWD to read the page size folder "C:\Program Files\Xara\Xara Web Designer\Templates\ENG" on startup so any page size templates we add will be available in the New menu and the drop down of the page properties.

Re: What I'd like to see in Web Designer
Also the option to rename the folders in the Designs Gallery, so instead of something like this: "C:\Program Files\Xara\Xara Web Designer\Templates\ENG" we could rename it to "Page Size Templates".
-
Re: What I'd like to see in Web Designer
You should not need to add the templates to the gallery. Just Save as template and it will appear in your template list so that it's no under File -> New -> menu options.
Slight bug means that you have to give it a .xar extension and not the usual .web extension. i.e. save it with a specific name like mytemplate.xar
That will be fixed in an update, but saving with .xar works for now.

Thanks Charles, I wondered why a new page template didn't show up too - save as .xar for the time being, noted.

Re: What I'd like to see in Web Designer
Note:
The File > New menu is still limited to displaying 13 items which are derived from the files stored in the templates directory (the same is true for Xara).
I believe the 2 top-most ones will always be the user's default template and the other is the animation template. The remaining 11 will the first 11 alphabetically sorted in the templates directory

Re: What I'd like to see in Web Designer
Perhaps the ability to define our own keyboard shortcuts?
-
Re: What I'd like to see in Web Designer
Nicky that is another Xara Xtreme Pro ability that was removed for Web Designer. If Web Designer is based on Xtreme rather than the Pro version it would not have been included from the beginning of application design.

They can be renamed:
Navigate to the relevant folder, open the Xarainfo folder and edit the xaraclip.txt file with a standard text editor ...
Edit the #DESCRIPTION: field to suit ......

Re: What I'd like to see in Web Designer
Good tip Keith.
Also remember that the Folders in the Gallery can be re arranged via dragging.
-
Re: What I'd like to see in Web Designer
Thanks, I've added that to the guide. :)
-
Re: What I'd like to see in Web Designer
Yeah, it weas a bit much to expect but I'm grateful for the speed and courtesy with which my request was handled, awesome, I'll look at it anyway as an alternative to NOF

Re: What I'd like to see in Web Designer
The ability to switch on / off the underline on text links per link as well as for the whole site like you have now.
-
Re: What I'd like to see in Web Designer
Why not just disable underlined links site-wide and then manually underline those you want underlined?? (with a line)
-
Re: What I'd like to see in Web Designer
Because.. er... it.. er *ahem* didn't occur to me... *whistle*. :D
-
Re: What I'd like to see in Web Designer
When clicking on a group of objects can you tell whether it's soft grouped or not? Perhaps colouring the four corner handles, say red, could indicate the group is soft grouped.

Re: What I'd like to see in Web Designer
Nicky the status line tells many things about the selected objects. See attached image.
-
Re: What I'd like to see in Web Designer
look at the status bar (at the bottom of the WD window). It constantly says what is currently selected.
edit: you beat me a 1 minute Bill! :D

Re: What I'd like to see in Web Designer
Doh, I should really think about these things before posting shouldn't I! :)

Re: What I'd like to see in Web Designer
Just a little note about putting things in the header (when it's implemented). I have huge amounts of code that go into the header, like this:
Code:
<script type="text/javascript">
var fadeimages=new Array()
//SET IMAGE PATHS. Extend or contract array as needed
fadeimages[0]=["images/resizedlogos/caribbean.png", "", ""] //plain image syntax
fadeimages[1]=["images/resizedlogos/charlieshift.png", "", ""] //image with link syntax
fadeimages[2]=["images/resizedlogos/madladlogo.png", "", ""] //image with link and target syntax
fadeimages[3]=["images/resizedlogos/nenedigital.png", "", ""] //plain image syntax
fadeimages[4]=["images/resizedlogos/scanddib.png", "", ""] //plain image syntax
var fadebgcolor="#e6ebff"
////NO need to edit beyond here/////////////
var fadearray=new Array() //array to cache fadeshow instances
var fadeclear=new Array() //array to cache corresponding clearinterval pointers
var dom=(document.getElementById) //modern dom browsers
var iebrowser=document.all
function fadeshow(theimages, fadewidth, fadeheight, borderwidth, delay, pause, displayorder){
this.pausecheck=pause
this.mouseovercheck=0
this.delay=delay
this.degree=10 //initial opacity degree (10%)
this.curimageindex=0
this.nextimageindex=1
fadearray[fadearray.length]=this
this.slideshowid=fadearray.length-1
this.canvasbase="canvas"+this.slideshowid
this.curcanvas=this.canvasbase+"_0"
if (typeof displayorder!="undefined")
theimages.sort(function() {return 0.5 - Math.random();}) //thanks to Mike (aka Mwinter) :)
this.theimages=theimages
this.imageborder=parseInt(borderwidth)
this.postimages=new Array() //preload images
for (p=0;p<theimages.length;p++){
this.postimages[p]=new Image()
this.postimages[p].src=theimages[p][0]
}
var fadewidth=fadewidth+this.imageborder*2
var fadeheight=fadeheight+this.imageborder*2
if (iebrowser&&dom||dom) //if IE5+ or modern browsers (ie: Firefox)
document.write('<div id="master'+this.slideshowid+'" style="position:relative;width:'+fadewidth+'px;height:'+fadeheight+'px;overflow:hidden;"><div id="'+this.canvasbase+'_0" style="position:absolute;width:'+fadewidth+'px;height:'+fadeheight+'px;top:0;left:0;filter:progid:DXImageTransform.Microsoft.alpha(opacity=10);opacity:0.1;-moz-opacity:0.1;-khtml-opacity:0.1;background-color:'+fadebgcolor+'"></div><div id="'+this.canvasbase+'_1" style="position:absolute;width:'+fadewidth+'px;height:'+fadeheight+'px;top:0;left:0;filter:progid:DXImageTransform.Microsoft.alpha(opacity=10);opacity:0.1;-moz-opacity:0.1;-khtml-opacity:0.1;background-color:'+fadebgcolor+'"></div></div>')
else
document.write('<div><img name="defaultslide'+this.slideshowid+'" src="'+this.postimages[0].src+'"></div>')
if (iebrowser&&dom||dom) //if IE5+ or modern browsers such as Firefox
this.startit()
else{
this.curimageindex++
setInterval("fadearray["+this.slideshowid+"].rotateimage()", this.delay)
}
}
function fadepic(obj){
if (obj.degree<100){
obj.degree+=10
if (obj.tempobj.filters&&obj.tempobj.filters[0]){
if (typeof obj.tempobj.filters[0].opacity=="number") //if IE6+
obj.tempobj.filters[0].opacity=obj.degree
else //else if IE5.5-
obj.tempobj.style.filter="alpha(opacity="+obj.degree+")"
}
else if (obj.tempobj.style.MozOpacity)
obj.tempobj.style.MozOpacity=obj.degree/101
else if (obj.tempobj.style.KhtmlOpacity)
obj.tempobj.style.KhtmlOpacity=obj.degree/100
else if (obj.tempobj.style.opacity&&!obj.tempobj.filters)
obj.tempobj.style.opacity=obj.degree/101
}
else{
clearInterval(fadeclear[obj.slideshowid])
obj.nextcanvas=(obj.curcanvas==obj.canvasbase+"_0")? obj.canvasbase+"_0" : obj.canvasbase+"_1"
obj.tempobj=iebrowser? iebrowser[obj.nextcanvas] : document.getElementById(obj.nextcanvas)
obj.populateslide(obj.tempobj, obj.nextimageindex)
obj.nextimageindex=(obj.nextimageindex<obj.postimages.length-1)? obj.nextimageindex+1 : 0
setTimeout("fadearray["+obj.slideshowid+"].rotateimage()", obj.delay)
}
}
...
...
So a nice big window (may be resizeable), unlike the placeholder window, would be ideal. ;)
Note: The code is twice as long but you're only allowed 5000 characters on the forum.

<script src="/js/myjscript.js" type="text/javascript"></script>

Re: What I'd like to see in Web Designer
I wont to give a pictures(of my site) a diferent names ... NOT 1,2,3,4, ..... jpg, png !!!
I wont to give attribute like "NAME FOR EXPORT" to anything object in my project.
Sorry for bad english.

Re: What I'd like to see in Web Designer
A little convenience I'd like to see relates to the colour editor. When it is open (no selected objects) it has the little drop-down selector for current line & fill colours. I'd like to see 'Background Colour' added to the list. It would be handy and perhaps a bit more intuitive than the other ways to set the background colour. It would make it far easier to apply a custom mixed or sampled colour without having to do a named colour step.
Regards, Ross

Re: What I'd like to see in Web Designer
As mentioned in the other thread: ability to change file extension for individual pages to work with includes put into placeholders so redundant manual editing would not be necessary.

Yes, that would work. Thanks. :)

Re: What I'd like to see in Web Designer
To Help editing:
1- Ability to purge unused via the appropriate dialogues, such as: names, layers, etc. without have save and reopen.
2- In Names dialog have an option to delete a name (with warning if name if currently being used).
2- Locate/find: names, layer pops links, placeholders.
3- Sync Layers! Be given the choice to have then same layer config for all pages as a default (could be switched off later if so desired). Also, if editability, visibility, and default layer choices in a page's Layer Gallery are modified, update all other page Layer Galleries.
4- Save color and/or tranparentcies gradients via the fill gallery for reuse.
5- Galleries: drag bitmap fills From the document into the Fill Gallery where they are auotamically saved permanently and indexed. Same with web docs by dragging the page into the Designs Gallery. Allow user to reorder folders in the Galleries directly by dragging the folders.
6- Paste inside a group so don't have ungroup and mess up properties assigned to the group.
7- forget this one.
8- Snippets Gallery

Re: What I'd like to see in Web Designer
No John, I believe that merely romoves the name from the selected object. If the name if is removed from all objects, it will still be listed in the dropdown list. The list can get quite long so (at least to me) it important to keep it "clean".
There is a work around. If you KNOW you are going to be creating new names, then you can assign an unused name to an object, then RENAME it to one that will be used.
=======================================
"Already exists. SHIFT+CTRL+V (edit>>paste in place)" yes but I believe it pastes it to the layer it was originally assigned to, not the layer you want to be placed on. [EDIT-CORRECTION] I was wrong about this. I would have sworn ... .... ... never mind! [/EDIT-CORRECTION]

Nope, it pastes to the 'selected' layer and in place.

Not sure I follow.
If I have ten objects named 'bee' and I remove it from all ten, it no longer appears in the list.
(PS: You may call me Steve if you prefer ;))

Re: What I'd like to see in Web Designer
john/steve :cool:
I stand corrected again. I just did another test. When I reopened the file the unsued name was gone.
Only conclusion I come to is that in my other tests, I had an unknown object with the name (I suspect when I ungrouped a softgroup) ... all the more reason to be able to search for names, etc.
Glad you're keeping me honest.
