New Versions of Xara Designer Pro X(15)
As per the announcement, there is a new version out, 15.0.0.52427. You have to download the trial version, install it, and provide your serial number to activate it. It installs separately from the previous version.
Interestingly, the plugins linked to the previous version showed up automatically. I don't know about toolbar settings and I use the default arrangement.
I presume that it is safe to uninstall the previous version?

Re: New Versions of Xara Designer Pro X(15)
It's still gobbling up 25% of my CPU usage when doing absolutely nothing. It's about time this was fixed.
Has that Simplon something or other software been dropped as I didn't see an option to NOT install it on installing Xara. There was another PC Cleaner type option which I declined installation.
Strangely just before seeing the post Talkgraphics Forum announcing the new release, I checked to see whether there was an update via the Help / Check for Updates menu and was informed it was up to date. How are users who don't frequent TG going to know of this latest release?

Re: New Versions of Xara Designer Pro X(15)
On uninstalling the previous version I think this might be wise if you have versions installed on two machines as I believe the registration is one and the same. I might be wrong but perhaps this can be clarified.

Hi Egg,
Not sure what you mean. I have the new version installed on my Surface Pro 4 along with the old version, and only the old version on the other computer (desktop). All work. I am about to update on my desktop.
I think that the SimpliClean thing is what you unchecked. It is now something vague. I will capture the screen and post it to warn others. There is one user on the Magix forum who went for it, ran it, and swears by it. I would rather not swear, so I won't take the chance.
Another point - the download is on the Magix.com site under the menu Photo&Design, select Xara Designer Pro X.

It is not the SimpliClean, but the MAGIX PC Check & Tuning 2018. I had this installed once, used it, but was too cheap to update to the new version each year.

I would never uninstall an earlier version until I was totally confident that the new one works.

Re: New Versions of Xara Designer Pro X(15)
Yep, did it. But Magix has see I'm in Germany and install the German version. Since all the years I work only with the English version of Xara products and now I must complete reorganize my tools to find them. Is there a way to switch to a English version? I dont find a way.
I will play around and see if there are more new function until the magic resize. My first view says no, no new drawing things. Maybe I'm wrong and I havn't find them yet.

For members in the US who need to retrieve their serial number go here http://www.xara.com/us/servicecenter/ sign in, and go to My Products.
Not sure what the other links for other countries are. Maybe someone from Xara or Magix can add these.

It's a free update for current DPX12 owners.
Thought that said, there is not a whole lot of there there.

Re: New Versions of Xara Designer Pro X(15)
Next upgrade to wait for spring now? "Happy New Year" from Xara(.
Months of waiting ... The current update(so the same as previous) is just upset me(.
I bought Affinity Designer before, but did refund. Now I bought again and finally! Now I work on older XDP365, but I think it's not for long ... maybe for a long time, but without updates, because I'm not willing to pay for such updates(. Where is new tools? Where corner tool, where new features of fill tool, where new animation for web, where "out" animation and trigers for it, where new web-site tool such as video-background and autofit for video and foto to browser window in vertial and horisontal. This is necessary things which are expected (. In the end - where roadmap? Not many people will pay for wrappers from online catalog.

@handrawn,
But, you wanted to be able to try out the new features without upgrading. So Xara listened and you have your wish, a version that installs separately from the previous one.
Like Gary says, it's a free update for those on the 365 program. If you aren't on the program, then wait until there is something or enough new features to justify jumping back in.
For someone considering purchasing, I would say that right after an update/grade would be the time in order to lock in those features. This may or may not be the right time, depending on your needs.
@All,
Don't forget, you have to go under Help, and download the content installer and Pan Studio. Also, the Design Gallery is empty of content, so you have to download everything if you want it off-line. Alternatively, you may be able to copy the content that you had before. Now, where is all of that again?
@Egg,
I now have Xara (365) installed 4 times, twice on each computer, with no activation problems. All 4 work. I checked my account under Magix and the most recent version is registered to each computer, activation date as today. I think that the system understands the name of the device, so if 365 is installed once as version 12.8.1.50861, and once as version 15.0.0.52427 on the same device, it accepts this. The license is by device.

Re: New Versions of Xara Designer Pro X(15)
Have to say that I'm a bit underwhelmed with the "new version". This is what a 'year' in development brought?
No, I'm not crazy upset or p_ssed off or lashing out at Xara etc. It still is a great program as is, just no real movement or strides taken with it since the 365 release. Feeling a tad taken
advantage of with my recent 365 payment to Xara. Just can't justify the payment amount in ratio to what released and get the feeling that is was just not worth the price.
Maybe I just have to do some more digging to find the "new version" features and advancements aside from 'new' text panels, new 'Social Media' stuff, other little thing'ys here and there...
and 'new' templates - more new templates?!?! This stuff is what is called a... "new version"? Yes I see the new page 'resize' thing... nice, but doesn't excite me. I suppose I'll make use of it
somewhere, sometime. Maybe I'm wrong... I guess 'technically it is a "new version".
You have to admit that most of these things (at least to me) feel like, what would be normal incremental feature 'upgrades' rather than being called a "new version" A bit strange... no? yes?
Is it me? Because so far nobody else is saying much about this "new version". Not much excitement. :-O Or is everyone just to damn tired to rehash things? Not that I want to mind you... just wondering
if I'm in a minority or something.
Oh well, it tis' what it tis'... c'est la vie. I'm afraid that I'm back to anticipation mode of what Serif might come up with for a web design app before the 'next' year "new version" of XDP... shame.

Hi Cliff,
No, this is not the new features for the year, only since July, thus this is an incremental upgrade for those who are still on the 365 program. Check out the rest of the features issued over the last year here on the Xara page.
Xara mentioned earlier somewhere that they were going to issue a new version (not 13 as Magix is superstitious), and here it is. It contains all of the new features issued over the last year plus the ones mentioned for Nov. 2017.

I hear you browj2... but at your provided link the first paragraph on that page says...
"New since v11: If you already own Designer Pro X11 or earlier then you'll find plenty to get excited about in our brand new version. We have some powerful new photo tools, significant text enhancements and a huge increase in content, and web designers will want to check out parallax scrolling effects, new animation types and new sticky effects to name just a few. And it doesn't end there, because there are some significant improvements in Xara Online Designer too."
So maybe it's just a psychological thing that when one (I) hear(s) "new version" up from 12 to 15, one would expect some major things to happen as the "New since v11" stated above. And in 'my' case, I would have been mentally more at ease if I heard words "new updates to your 365 program"... then I might have said/thought "oh, fine, some added some new features to the app., great".
But just by 're-numbering it' - 're-naming it' - 'calling it something else', does that really make it a "new version"? I don't know, maybe I'm just being too picky about the verbiage, but just what my gut was feeling what I saw those words...
"new version"
All the best
Cliff

oh come on...
I asked, in a thread in Dear Xara that incidently Xara never replied to, how this would be possible ... am I to suppose that they were not intending to and then changed their mind just for me?
No, I reckon they just didn't want to set any sort of precedent in case they had to change their scheduling in a hurry... one of the signs of a failing Company btw...
And because I have my answer now does not mean that I will take up that option if what I see in the shop window does not look attractive [to me] - what I wanted was to know there would be an option, and it will always remain just an option as you yourself have said in so many words
Licencing by device is my understanding of the system up to ver 11 - it would make sense for it to be continuing that way
@hakoo 'porcine pinna' about sums it up rotflmao

Re: New Versions of Xara Designer Pro X(15)
As Designer Pro X is the "flagship" product I was hoping for a few more unique features, updates, etc. instead of the same additions made to Web Designer.
The newest feature, Auto Fit to Page is the most unique feature with the addition of new page sizes for various social media (see my screen shot).
While this is kind of cool, I wonder how many people will actually use this feature? I spend way too much time on Facebook and Twitter, and I have a folder full of memes I have created to respond to posts and comments, but the size has never been an issue.
I have said this before and I think it is worth saying again. Instead of adding new features that are soon forgotten, (when was the last time you used Content Aware Photo Resize for example), why not spend some time updating features such as Bitmap Tracer. The support for Glyphs and Style Sets cries out for a more intuitive interface. For that matter the entire text tool infobar needs a rethink. It has grown unweildy.
I am not trying to turn this into a features request. I am just trying to point out that new features get added, and then are quickly forgotten while the search for the next shiny object commences. This update is not worthy of a jump from 12 to 15. It is more like 12.0.5

I agree in all points.
I for me have uninstall the 15. I got the German version and there is no chance to get an English version from here (Germany). The two versions made on my machine problems and slow all XDP X versions down. In the German 15 version i was'nt able to install the content catalog. I send a ticket via the Service to Magix. Will see if I become an answer.
This Update/-grade is a great piece of s… Where are the stunning new features like promised in October? The money for the renewal, I would rather have spend on drinks or throw it away.

@Boy,
Yes, and maybe like you, I am an Affiliate, as I accepted that thing for web design such that if you leave the link to Xara at the bottom of a web page and someone clicks on it and then buys Xara, you can collect a commission. Since I've only done this on 2 very obscure web sites, I have collected a grand total of 0$. The Xara affiliate program has been replaced by a Magix Affiliate program. I must look into that to see if I can may collect more 0$
I do have a vested interest in Magix and Xara, as I have invested a lot of money, time and effort into many of the programs. Xara is the least of them. I have Magix - Video Pro X, Movie Edit Pro, Samplitude Pro X3 Suite, MusicMaker Premium, SoundForge Pro 11, Audio & Music Lab, and several other ones, and at least several versions of each. I follow closely the evolution of most of these. I do mention on the Magix.info forum things that don't work, raise tickets with Magix, and most surprisingly, they actually fix the problems (before introducing new problems when new features come out).
@Egg,
On my Surface Pro 4 with both Xara 12 and 15 open, a dozen tabs open in 12, 1 in 15, I am getting fluctuations of between 0 and 5%, when doing nothing, jumping to about 10% of my 8GB of RAM when I do something, like move a photo. On my desktop, with 16GB of RAM, I am getting about 13% for 12, and less than 1% for 15. Moving a photo in 12 doesn't change the usage much, maybe up to 15%. In version 15, moving a photo causes a jump to about 5%, then quickly drops back. It looks to me like there is a new engine in 15 that is more efficient.
For comparison, here is what is loaded in RAM:
Surface Pro 4
- version 12: 235,696 kb
- version 15: 81,224 kb
Desktop:
- version 12: 153,948 kb
- version 15: 87,920

Re: New Versions of Xara Designer Pro X(15)

Re: New Versions of Xara Designer Pro X(15)
Thanks for that info too John. It's not an issue that effects all machines but it affects a few and I'm not the only one. And whilst Xara are aware of it they have never been able to track this bug down.

Re: New Versions of Xara Designer Pro X(15)
Eric,
It might be to many fonts installed or a buggy one that makes the program tumble.

Eric,
I opened one file in Version 15 that I've been working on.
While observing this thread here on TG, I took a peak in Task Manager to see what the usage was for Version 15, and it fluctuates between 19% and 30%. Is this what you are referring to when you mention 25% of your CPU usage?
Also, how does this affect the performance of one's computer?

It's been a long standing problem I and others but not all have had with Xara software. I'll try & find an earlier thread where I did a video highlighting the very high cpu usage even though the program was not being worked on and just in an idle state. It may take a while fot me to find it.
As for fonts, I don't have a excessive amounts of these installed, far from it.
Here's a screengrab of my Task Manager / Processes as I type the reply to this thread. The CPU usage is at 19.4% even though Xara is idle and not being used.
-
Re: New Versions of Xara Designer Pro X(15)
Got it Eric.
I had the same problem, but with this update and downloading the content installer and Panarama, it is now running at 8%.
I don't understand that, but I'm glad it has dropped.

Re: New Versions of Xara Designer Pro X(15)
The new version of Xara is another disappointment for the graphic designer and illustrator. It is unfortunate that the developers do not hear their users.

I have read blogs by graphic designers that make up graphics for other bloggers. They talked about having to layout graphics for post for the different size requirements of the various social media platforms and how they have to work the design for between the platforms. I could see this as a big advantage for these type designers. Most of these people are probably not using Xara but I do think it is a neat idea, whether I would ever use it is a different question.

Re: New Versions of Xara Designer Pro X(15)
Well,
I appreciate that the update has lessened my cpu usage, but I really can't see what in this update really is "new" for me as an "artist" ( I use artist liberally here).
I was hoping for some real additions and improvements to this update.
-
Re: New Versions of Xara Designer Pro X(15)
I was looking in the content catalog at the print/calendars and was surprised that there was no 2018 versions. Still using this years and labeling them as new. Almost the end of year and this was not updated. Please some manager at Xara needs to start setting up their schedule on what needs to be updated.
I must note that I do not use these calendars as I have a special calendar made for our company where I just supply the graphics and the print firm does the date portion.

I'm in the same boat - super annoying. There is a switch in the menu bar ("Hilfe > Sprache der Benutzeroberfläche" or something...), but the only language you can select there is indeed German.
Is there something wrong with the MAGIX servers? The download of V.15 and the content pack was abysmally slow and any attempt to update the local design galleries results in a multitude of error messages concerning files that could not be found on the server, followed by a request to check my internet connection (which is fine, thank you...). Not even the online content catalogue works:

Considering that MAGIX is supposed to be the distribution workhorse I can't say that I'm much impressed by their handling of this release.
This whole V.15 update got me into a bit of a catch-22 situation... V.15 finally solved the nasty PDF export bug I encountered, but leaves me with an outlandish user interface: The UI now may be in my German mother's tongue, but I'm using the English interface since Xara Extreme 4 and I'm so very used to it. And I don't like having those decisions forced upon me.

That's where I got the file from... I even used a proxy in the US to make sure.
But the downloader in that .exe seems to analyse the language your Windows installation is set to and automatically downloads the corresponding language version of the software. So, do I feel like fiddling with the system language to (hopefully) fool this MAGIX nonsense? Don't think so.
Why not ask the customer which language pack he/she wants to install? That's what most other software out there does. And I'm still puzzled by that language switch in the UI: What good is a switch that doesn't switch anything? Or is this supposed to be programmers' humor?
BTW, this happens when I click on Help > Check for Updates... (in English: "Could not reach update server or could not read update information."). This is not exactly inspiring confidence in MAGIX's way of handling this piece of software.
