Best Linux distribution for Xara Xtreme LX?
Which Linux distribution could you guys recommended for running Xara Xtreme LX? How about Kubuntu or Ubuntu? Or SuSE? Both of these distros seem very professional. Will they allow hassle-free installation? And what additional libraries may I need to download?
What problems should I be aware of?
Thanks.

Re: Best Linux distribution for Xara Xtreme LX?
I've tested Xara Xtreme for Linux under Open SuSE 10.0 and under Ubuntu 6.06 Desktop. Xara Xtreme for Linux runs without problems under these two Linux distributions. If you use the Autopackage Archive, there is no additional software necessary - as far as I remember (perhaps it's necessary to install "Image Magick", but on my system "Image Magick" was already installed).

I've been running Xara LX on both a 32-bit and 64-bit AMD set of boxes, using autopackage to install without a hitch. None. I use Fedora Core 5 but all this is true of FC4 also, both so easy to keep updated with all the latest releases through yum or yum extended. I use Gnome as my desktop manager, not KDE. Gnome is faster, having less shared libraries to check. FC5 just about gets it all together, FC6 would do it for me.

Re: Best Linux distribution for Xara Xtreme LX?
Wish I could help. I've been playing with knoppix for the last 6 months, have being playing with linux in general for about 6 or 7 years and still don't feel very confortable with Linux in general but hoping to someday. Have the boxed version of Suse that I am going to install in a week or so hopefully and then I can proudly join you computer nerds (don't I wish). So far, in 10 years, in a futile effort to tell Bill G. to kiss my arse I have tried a very early version of Red Hat, two versions of Mandrake, Knoppix, now a newer version of Knoppix, a c.d. with ubuntu, and my store bought version of Suse, which hopefully will be the last. Someday, maybe soon, probably not, I really hope I can join you adults in an intelligent converstation on this thread but personally I'm not holding my breath........frank

Re: Best Linux distribution for Xara Xtreme LX?
Hi Vytis,
Welcome to Talkgraphics.
I use Debian and both Kubuntu and Ubuntu are based on the Debian distribution. I did not have to install any additional libraries to use the AutoPackage releases of Xara Xtreme for Linux.
I don't think you would have any problems with any of the current Linux distributions.
I tried installing Xara Xtreme LX on an old version (7.1) of Red Hat and it reported it needed a new version of some libraries. Red Hat 7.1 is about 6 or 7 years old.

We have an impressively inconsistency on what the developers run here. I run Ubuntu, but I know for a fact there are people running Gentoo, SUSE, and Fedora. If you use the package for the distro concerned (0.7 has just gone into Ubuntu Edgy) you should not need to download any additional libraries - your package manager should do it for you.

As you may have noticed you will probably get as many answers to this question as there are posts in this thread (I like Debian). That being said I would recommend Ubuntu if you don't have much Linux experience. The recent versions I have played with are pretty slick and as Alex mentioned xaralx is distributed by Ubuntu so It Just Works(tm).

Re: Best Linux distribution for Xara Xtreme LX?
Thanks everyone! I really appreciate it. You've assured me that both of these attractive distros (Ubuntu and SuSE) are suitable for Xara. I'm planning on dual-booting my PC to do ALL of my graphic / web design work with Xara under Linux. Seems like now is the perfect time.
Cheers!

"Seagull : Wish I could help. I've been playing with knoppix for the last 6 months"
Knoppix might be a little too difficult at times. Had it installed, works good but some glitch gets you stuck. Watch for this years release. Xandros is stable but limited what you can install (eventually you can find most you need in user provided repositories) Currently I found Mepis 6 to work perfect. Installed a heap of progs and evrerything works, including Xara .

Re: Best Linux distribution for Xara Xtreme LX?
I feel that PCLinuxOS is the best Linux distro around. But it doesn't have a Xara package in the repository.
I have successfully built Xara from the latest source code in PCLinuxOS Big Daddy. My first attempt in PCLinuxOS MiniME 0.93a failed. Once I can consistently build XaraLX for PCLinuxOS I plan to place the instructions on the PCLinuxOS forum.

Why do you post this message more than one time in this forum?
btw: If PCLinuxOS doesn't have a Xara package in the repository, it can't be the best Linux distrubtion around... ;)

Re: Best Linux distribution for Xara Xtreme LX?
I posted on different threads to be complete, sorry for the duplication.
Despite not having PCLinuxOS in the repository, PCLinuxOS is the best distro. Because of the efforts of some PCLinuxOS users, we are working towards a XaraLX binary that works in PCLinuxOS, and may be on our way towards a package for the repository. I currently have a XaraLX binary that appears to work in PCLinuxOS, but it needs more testing. I have been able to share .xar files between the XaraLX binary and the Windows version of Xara X which I use at work.

I see, you are a fan of "your" Linux distribution. ;)
But beside your enthusiasm: Do you also know other Linux distributions in detail? Is there something better with PCLinuxOS instead of the popular Linux Distributions Ubunto, OpenSUSE or RedHat?

What does PCLinuxOS offer that Fedora Core 5 doesn't? I use autopackage to update Xara on my system without any trouble, do it as the revisions come out taking less than a minute total.

The same with Ubuntu and OpenSUSE... :)

Re: Best Linux distribution for Xara Xtreme LX?
I've tried Ubuntu, SuSe, Fedora, Mepis and others. My own personal experience is that PCLinuxOS just works better for me and my WIFE than the others. I have been able to get PCLinuxOS to work so well that my wife has stopped using Windows. And now I have finally found the packages to allow me to build Xara Xtreme without error and have it run without crashing. Another PCLinuxOS user is taking my builds and distributing to the rest of the PCLinuxOS community. It may not be in the PCLinuxOS repos, but it is available and in use by PCLinuxOS users.
If you really want to try a Linux distro that works without the hype you have to give PCLinuxOS a try.

xara lx already in a distri?
Does someone know if xaralx is already integrated in a linux distri? I mean if xara is on the cd. Espacially on a live linux cd.
I shall teach children in graphics with an graphic program, but may not install a graphic program on their windows computers. So I probably must take a live linux cd. I want to use open office and later xara. But for that I need definitivly a live linux - I have no other idea.
First I thought about "grafpup" but the page is down.
Has someone an idea or does someone know about?

Re: xara lx already in a distri?
Hi Penguin,
I think that Red Hat may have XaraLX on their newest Fedora CD. Debian doesn't have it on their CD/DVD but it is available in their Non-Free software. I don't recall hearing if any other distributions have it.
XaraLX is still in development so not all the Windows version features are available.

Re: xara lx already in a distri?
slax live CD with XaraLX module added
fit on small pocket size CD
www.slax.org
from downloads you can get iso image
from modules download XaraLX module + one library, add him to modules folder in iso image
and then burn and boot

Re: xara lx already in a distri?
Thanks for your quick and helpful answers!
I belive slacks is a very good tip and I will try it next time. Thats wonderful, thanks for your help!
I'm sure its no problem to burn new cd's after some weeks with a newer version of xara.
-
Re: xara lx already in a distri?
No, avcourse
you just need to install and save like module file new Xara version
after that you must add module file in modules folder on iso image and again to burn it
Read on site
you can create and bootable USB drive which is better for changes like this, saving settings, updated softwares, new installs etc, which is unavailable in live CD, all changes are temporary untill shutdown....

Re: xara lx already in a distri?
Xara Xtreme for Linux is a standard package in Ubuntu Edgy Eft (6.10) to be released this week. See: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/XaraXtreme

Re: xara lx already in a distri?
Thanks for your good ideas.
The idea taking an usb stick for installing is also not bad.
I believe I will take a combination of installing a linux on the old computers and on the new laptops on harddisk. There I may install. And installing a linux on an usb stick on the new computers where I may not install anything on harddisk.
And perhaps later the children can take a live linux on CD home for working at home with the programs. I believe unfortunately nobody will have linux on their computers at home.

I use MEPIS-6.0, which is installed from a LiveCD. It is based on Ubuntu.
To my suprise I discovered that xara is installed by default in MEPIS!!
Xara is also in the repository.

Re: Best Linux distribution for Xara Xtreme LX?
MEPIS-6.0, based on Ubuntu, comes as a LiveCD. It includes Xara.

Re: Best Linux distribution for Xara Xtreme LX?
PCLinuxOS, a clone of Mandriva by TexStar, is even better than Mandriva because TexStar polished it to perfection. I agree with you that for new refugees from Windows, PCLinuxOS makes an excellent choice. It certainly has the best maintenance control panel of any Linux OS. The latest version, 0.93-bigdaddy, uses the latest KDE, 3.5.5.
It has, IMO, two faults:
1) There are only 5,000 apps in its repository, and
2) using RPMBONE to try and install Mandrake 9.2 RPMs, the closest match, often results in dependency hell. (- you have libfoo-x. The app needs libfoo-y, and libfoo-y requires libbar-z. But, libbar-z requires libfoo-x!!!)
But, if all you are doing is email, surfing, office stuff using OpenOffice, database stuff using PostgreSQL, development stuff using KDevelop and/or QT4-Designer, without having to worry about viruses, popup ads, and black hat intruders then PCLinuxOS is for you.
Personally, I run MEPIS-6.0, which is more KDE than KUbuntu.

Re: Best Linux distribution for Xara Xtreme LX?
Works fine on Musix, which is a debian base, kde... had to download the additional package, then no difficulties at all... till app was opened... get a.... mailcap 91 error... click through, the app opens and all is well :)
will test a few more during the next few days and post the info...

Debian here as well, no problems

Re: Best Linux distribution for Xara Xtreme LX?
Hi... Thanx for this Bill :)
Yea minimiro, slax is very good for adding on apps and such as modules... went without a hitch... great little disro... once one adds what they are looking for... and still quick from disk... needs a install to hd button... :)

Re: Best Linux distribution for Xara Xtreme LX?
Just loaded on ubuntu, and image magick, and then used the add/remove software option, loaded on XaraXtremeLX without a hitch, and no errors at all... there was one about loading on Image Magick, but once that has been done, all is good... and ubuntu's gnome environment does seem much quicker than kde, as was suggested earlier in this thread... very cool... :)
