3D tool in v4 - can I have a bitmap fill on the SIDE part?
as per subject.
once you extrude an upbext to 3D- in my case it's a numeral "1" in a fat font, and a picture of a child in a bitmapt fill onto the face of the "1", if I extrude that, I get some color on the side on the Z axis as the numeral gains depth and rotates to an angle-- can I fill that side z-axies area with anotehr bitmap? I see I can drag a color there-- but dragging a color to the side z-axis just replaces the bitmap on the FRONT, not the side....
Thanks

Hi Tallis. No you can't apply a bitmap fill to the sides. You can change the colour of the side however and retain the bitmap fill on the face. Just have the extrusion selected and right click on the colour line to change the side colours (just as you do to change a shapes line colour).

Remember that for simple surfaces, you can always post a sticker on it.

You can apply a bit map to the sides of an extrusion using the mold tool.
You're faster than me David, I was looking for a previous post on this

Ah, agreed. You can use the mould tool.

Yikes. I forgot about my starting this thread and just now remembered to check-- didn't even know I had responses! Thanks to all of you, I figured the mould tool, but Xara has so many tricks, I just thought you could drop a photo onto the side of an extrusion... Silly me...:D

I know this isn't exactly what you want to do and that its a little more complicated than you might want in order to produce a result but you can do what you like as regards texturising or colouring the sides of your extruded letter/number or shape with a little drawing in xara over your extrude.

Alternatively, since an extrusion can easily be converted into a vector:
-Create extrusion
-[Convert to editable shapes] so that you now have a vector shape
-[Slice] shape into sides/panels on which to place photos
-Use [Fill] tool to place each bitmap onto your different vectors
-Use the fill handles to distort the photo to the correct perspective.

Or even a mix of fills! Method works great.

Place a plain version on top with [Darken transparency].

Um.. could you explain how you see a rasterized extrusion becoming a vector?
With my version of Xtreme4, converting an extrusion to an editable shape converts the extrusion to a flattened bitmap which has an editable boundary matching the shape (you need to set a line width to see this), with the flattened extrude becoming a bitmap fill.
The extrude itself is not vectorized or traced by this process. Unless I've missed something?

Yep - your file confirms what I said. You cannot turn an extrude (which is a bitmap) into an editable vector.

You are quite right.
Maybe I should have worded it better.
An editable extrude is simply a vector shape with a bitmap fill.

Derek,
You're the man. Had to try it myself. I'm allllllllllmost there.

Derek, that is a facinating graphic.

I was wondering whether the 3D lighting transparency would fool the eye into not realising that the photo was not actually curved around the shape.
I think that it does work but you have to be selective with the photo/ fill.

I'm 'a man' anyway.
Looking good, you just need to slant the gravel on the front face a little. Once you remove the tyranny of the bitmap extrude there’s is no limit to what you can do with it.

Or possibly the best way is to deform the bitmap is with the deformation tools in live effects such a pin cushion, fish eye or even liquid colour as in the crude example.

Thanks Derek,
Here's an adjustment to the angle of the sand.
In the U.S. the phrase "you're the man" is intended as a compliment, indicating that you're "number one", "in charge", "set the bar", etc.

Here too, due to films no doubt; I was joking, it's a problem I have when it comes to taking anything seriously. Its called age or second childhood over here.
Reflection seems much better to me now.

This uses a single marble bitmap with absolutely no effects, perspective or distortion.
The 3D is all in the lighting.
