Pages Jump When Navigating
Xara Web Designer Websites
Is there a way to stop the pages from "jumping" or "jiggling" when navigating between pages? Once the browser has been to the page the transition is smooth but I would like to be able to avoid the initial "jumping".
Thanks!
Monica
Re: Pages Jump When Navigating
I believe this happens when pages are different depths. So, perhaps make all your pages the same length?
Re: Pages Jump When Navigating
Darn, I thought there might be an html code or something that would fix it. Having all of the pages the same length is not very practical for the sites already created. Thank you for your advice!

Re: Pages Jump When Navigating
Hi Monica.
I have a web site that has different length pages.
I don't see any "jumping" as you describe it?
So, I'm not sure what you mean?
Re: Pages Jump When Navigating
Here is an example: http://www.metroholistic.com
When I navigate from page to page then new page jiggles horizontally for a fraction of a second before settling. When I revisit the pages they are fine (because they are in my browser's cache, correct?)
Re: Pages Jump When Navigating
I see what you mean, but can't see any reason for it. It's does it in both Firefox and IE. Is it possible to post the file or is it too big? Does it also do it when previewing?

Re: Pages Jump When Navigating
You should have warned me that I would be instantly assaulted by an officious voice when I followed the link.
I am sure there is a good reason to have that voice start up on page load, but I for one find that offensive and will be off a page like that the second I hear the voice. The page is about healing art, not hearing aids. ;)
Re: Pages Jump When Navigating
I have also noticed this "jumping" behavior on a number of xara designed websites that others have posted. I've also seen it on some of the websites that I have created with web designer. I find the behavior quite annoying and it takes away from the professionalism of the website. It would be nice to find out the cause of it. Hopefully someone from Xara will stop by and help in troubleshooting this problem.
Re: Pages Jump When Navigating
gwpriester - sorry about the audio assault - just playing around with that. Traditionally I do not put any sound on a website but this is an experiment. Let me know if you need your hearing healed. :D
I hope the jiggling is resolved because most of the Xara websites I have created have this problem. I will keep checking in.
Re: Pages Jump When Navigating
okay - maybe not "most" of the xara websites ... http://monicaswebsitedesign.com/portfolio.htm
Re: Pages Jump When Navigating
Thanks for posting this, Monica. I've got the problem, too, on several new sites I've designed. I've been researching this for a while now, and have tried making the pages the same length, making the copy the same length, forcing scrollbars into the pages via CSS tricks, blah, blah. I honestly never noticed it before. Here's a site under development where the problem is quite pronounced. I just rebuilt the entire site from scracth, each page was duplicated from the index one at a time, just to make sure there were no sizing issues from page to page. In that test, no jump when I added "Services" and "Gallery"; once I'd added "Quote" and "About Us", the jiggling started to appear when navigating back towards "Home". (Hope that makes sense). Again, this site is under development, so it's raw right now:

Re: Pages Jump When Navigating
Monica what page width are you using for the pages that jitter?
Re: Pages Jump When Navigating
Hi Bill.
The page width, on all pages, is 1100px.
It's only the length that is different.
Re: Pages Jump When Navigating
Thanks Rik. I asked about the width because the length has nothing to do with how a browser will horizontally render a page.
If a persons browser window is wider than a page it must recalculate to center the page on the window, this can cause the jiggle.
If a persons browser window is narrower than the page it must also recalculate and add a bottom scrollbar, again some jiggle.
Re: Pages Jump When Navigating
Hi Bill.
What I found was that not all pages, on Monica's site, jiggle, on the first visit.
Surely, that's weird?
But, what width would be a good recommendation, then?
Also, I will give more information on what I've found with my other Laptop.
Apologies. A bit busy with work at the moment.
So, please have a bit of patience.
Re: Pages Jump When Navigating
If you can believe statistics published on the web, there are many people still using 1024 x 768 resolution. If you want to subscribe to the theory that all those people use the browser in full screen mode then the 955 pixel (XGA) template would be a good choice.
I would recommend gathering your own statistics about the visitors to your site and decide what width page would work for the majority of the visitors.
Re: Pages Jump When Navigating
Hi Bill.
Re: Monica's metroholistic.com web site
Both of my Laptops are set to 1280x800 resolution.
First Laptop:
Has Windows XP Pro.
Using IE8, I get no jumping. But, there is scrollbar along the bottom.
Using FireFox, I get jumping but no scrollbar at the bottom. So, the centre of the page is being calculated as you suggest.
Second Laptop:
Is a MacBook Pro with Windows 7 running in a VM.
Using IE8, I got no jumping as far as I could see and no scrollbar either.
Using FireFox, I got some jumping on some pages and no scrollbar.
On the Mac side.
Using FireFox I get jumping and no scrollbar.
Using Safari, I get no jumping but the scrollbar at the bottom appears momentarily, which probably shows that some calculations are being done.
So, all in all, your indications that the pages may be too wide sounds pretty good to me.
Particularly when on my XP Pro laptop, I get a scrollbar to show that the page is too wide in that set-up.
The one question I have is, why is there a scrollbar (on my XP Pro with IE8) when there is clear space either side of the page?
Re: Pages Jump When Navigating
I have had this issue as well, maybe look into the tileing background I believe it is a centering issue
Re: Pages Jump When Navigating
Well I looked at Monica's web site in IE9 on my big screen, no jumping at all.
Re: Pages Jump When Navigating
Rik IE8 is known to have problems with horizontal scrollbar, either appearing when it should not or not appearing when it should. Without Monica's source file it would be difficult to say what is causing the problem.
Re: Pages Jump When Navigating
I have taken a look at Monica's WD7P file. After exporting the site and placing it on my two local web servers, one Windows and one Linux and viewing the pages with multiple browsers it seems the ecwid shopping bag is the code causing the pages to jiggle on first load.
Using the Opera browser the ecwid logo is seen to the left of the page as it moves to the left. A fraction of a second later when the logo disappears the page moves back to the right. Looking at the pages that jiggle there is code for the shopping bag or code to add to the shopping bag. Pages without that code do not jiggle on first viewing.
Re: Pages Jump When Navigating
Hi Monica,
I had the same 'jumping', but I found out out that if I change the renewal frequency of the pages in IE, from every visit to a lower frequency, the jumping is gone. Hope this helps.
Best regards,
Inge
Re: Pages Jump When Navigating
Thank you to everyone for your comments and suggestions. If Ecwid is the culprit then it makes sense that a form widget on a "request a quote" or "contact us" page would create the same problem. It seems that although a culprit has been found that there is no solution. Maybe this can be fixed in the next Web Designer version?
Inge, I assume that each visitor has control of their renewal frequency and is not something that I can influence. Correct?
