mine ;)
Great looking ice cubes Andrew and Minimiro.
Here's an update to the one I posted in the Bubbles thread a few days ago.
Thanks for the Xara file :)
Helps me understand how that was created and will assist my creative efforts in the future!
Looks great btw :)
does this one count :) ?
Sure, anything goes!
Here is a rounded cube, filled with a fractal clouds fill, then distorted with a glass pluggin. - AF
Interesting challenge AndFarr. Ill have to take a kick at it this weekend. Great submissions, to date.
Those are great...I hope I get to the point I can join in and try something like that.
Barbara
Another.
Oops! Well if you look closely you are supposed to be able to see a fly in the cube. But with resizing and jpg artifacts it is hard to make out the detail
Oh well !.- AF
And another.
My little contribution for the ice cube thread.
Harder than I imagined when I first started to doodle.
Derek
Quite amazing Derek :)
How long did that take you?
Dave
This morning, 3 hours ish.
derek
I could probably manage the black/white squares in that time :(
Dave
One black square, one white square; duplicate and nudge to position, select all duplicate again, nudge down etc. until you have enough, group together apply perspective mould; preparation and cooking time 10 mins?
Ice is very difficult. If you can find an advertisement with photo of a glass of whiskey and ice cubes you will see some great reflections and highlights. Of course what you see in the photo in all likelihood are glass or plastic ice cubes and not real ice. Photographing a drink with real ice cubes is not practical because the ice has to be just right, not too sharp and not too melted. Years ago when I worked on the Suntory Whisky account we did photography using real ice cubes and it was a nightmare.
Because of the nature of clear ice, you get a lot of dark reflections as well as a lot of very light highlights and everything in between.
Here is my attempt but it really needs a lot of work still. It is only the bare bones of a beginning.
I am also attaching some photos I found doing a Google search for ice cubes and whisky on ice.
Gary
Thought I would give this a try.
What a fun project. This should be a monthly deal.
Sigh - I was getting a lot closer. Ack!!!
Gary
YIKERS!!!!! Now THAT's a SERIOUS ERROR!!!!!:(
That serious error is quite common... I think it occurs when you have a lot of bitmaps in your gallery and playing with fills/transparency. I hope the patch will come out soon.
The patch we are about to release is unlikely to fix this crash, but it's hard to say without a lot more information about how the crash is triggered.
Please can someone attempt to reproduce it and submit the steps required?
Thanks
Neil
Neil
I was using the patch.
My only guess is maybe from a lot of trial and error and adding a deleting (AND NOT FREQUENT SAVING :() that my system became unstable and caused the crash.
I can't remember doing anything that different.
By the way and in case you were wondering, I made a screen capture using Shift Print Screen before I crashed then I opened a new Xtreme window and pasted the screen capture into that window.
Gary
Can't you recall what tool you were in at the time of the crash or what operation you did that triggered it? That arrow in your screenshot must mean you were in either the transparency or fill tool presumably?
Neil
Neil
Yeah, I noticed the arrow too. Probably the Transparency Tool and probably applied to an object or group of objects with feathering.
Gary
A little different. - AF
Those look pretty convincing, Andy.
(The contour on the stem of the glass does not, however) :o
Gary
I agree. Creating glassware is new for me and I'm not working from example so it isn't as realistic as it should be.
I appreciate your critique as it will push me to "go the extra mile" on my work. Thanks! -AF
great cubes !!
I need to figure out how to get all my darn plugins into xara and try this one !!
These cubes were meant to be more artistic than actual.- AF
Andy
One of the best sources for glass are some of the mail order catalogs. The glassware is photographed by experts who really know how to light glass, silver and other items to make them look incredible. You can learn a lot by trying to emulate their photography.
I have several Restoration Hardware catalogs that I plan to use one of these days to do a tutorial from.

Voici mon cube de glace :)
Je l'aime bien Dominique!
( I like it a lot Dominique!)
I don't speak French, but I have a French dictionary!
-AF
Yes, very well rendered Dominique.
Looks like you have a real ice cube as a reference. Some ARE totally cloudy with very small air bubbles in them, like in your work. Pure vectors?
Thank you! Yes it is a creation 100% Xara (without use of the pluggins) Here the details in image
Excellent work, Dominique!
Most Excellent work Dominique.
Gary, I look forward to your tutorial. The company I work for ships some of Restoration Hardware's product line. I'll have to ask for a catalog when I go out to the warehouse.
Dominique,
Excellent work!
ron
Thank You Everybody :)
here an other test with ice cubes
Coming soon in the June Xara Xone Tutorial, how I made my ice cube.
Stay tuned.
