Yes. Create placeholder object. Give it a "<head>" name (main menu "Utilities/Names..."). Add following code to the placeholder:
where icon.png is an URL of your icon image.Code:<link rel="icon" type="image/png" href="icon.png" />
Don't forget to add for IE, it's still the most used browser on the market.
add both lines and you'll be covering all browsers. make sure you have two images, one with your png extension and one with ico
Code:<link rel="icon" href="http://example.com/favicon.ico" type="image/x-icon">
Why the png filename? I have only used ico up to now.
Hi Willie,
You can use an ico , bmp, jpg, or png as your favicon.
Thanks for the help, I shall have a go using the advice.
Thanks for the tips. I succeeded with the tip for FireFox.
But adding the line for IExplorer, did not show the favicon in IE8.
Furthermore, the favicon in FF disappeared upon page refresh (F5).
Here are a copy of the content in my <head> placeholder;
<link rel="icon" type="image/png" href="teeeest_htm_files/LogTest.png" />
<link rel="icon" href="href="teeeest_htm_files/LogTest.png" type="image/x-icon">
Will appreciate any help.:)
Correction to the above; There was a typo on my part.
Using the two lines;
<link rel="icon" type="image/png" href="teeeest_htm_files/LogTest.png" />
<link rel="icon" href="teeeest_htm_files/LogTest.png" type="image/x-icon">
produces a correct result with FireFox, but still not for IE8.
Try emptying IE's cache and restarting IE.
Hi, sledger,
I have deleted all the temp internet files etc using "Tools -- Alternatives for Internet -- Browserlog". I do not normally use IE, so I am not to familiar with it anymore. I am uncertain whether this is the cache purge you meant.
Anyway, still no go in IE8. Only in FFox.
Sorry I was mistaken in my earlier post. IE will not use a png for a favicon but FireFox will.
Are you sure Bill? I use png's and they're fine in IE7, at least for display in the address bar and tabs, not sure about in favourite lists though as I rarely use IE.
Hi Egg,
It may be IE8 that is giving me problems using a png.
Amateur mentioned he wasn't getting the icon using IE so I created a simple test file and a png for the favicon. After putting them into a folder on my webhost and connecting using IE8 and FireFox the icon is shown in the address bar of FF but not in IE8.

Both FF and IE8 display the favicon for my XaReg pages

This is from the beta version Bill but it does appear to be an outstanding problem LINK
Thanks Egg.
I don't know if wikipedia hasn't been updated but they state that IE does not support using gif or png for favicons.

Thank you all, guys.
I searched a little on MicroSofts pages, and discovered many complaints about favicons displaying/not displaying in IE8 and earlier versions.
I guess this is a problem to sort out for MicroSoft.
However, if IE8 cannot use .png, .jpg as address bar icon,
how do I export a Xara graphic in the .ico format?
(Renaming a "example.png" file in Explorer failed, the extension did not change.)
Thanks for any help.

Xtreme doesn't output to .ico format.
But you can create your graphic in Xtreme, save as png then open it in IrfanView and then save as .ico :)
Is there any merit at all to including a "shortcut icon" tag as well? For example:
Code:<link rel="shortcut icon" href="http://www.mysite.com/favicon.ico" type="image/x-icon" >
Hi Spinny,
I use the "shortcut icon" in my code and it doesn't help IE see png or gif images. ;)
Thanks. I'd wondered whether there were any real value added in including it.
I have only ever used ico extensions. It is easy to get a free icon editing program that saves such a file e.g. IcoFX
IE7 takes time to display the icon, I do not know why, it was several days before mine appeared. Now they work in firefox and IE7. I have not tried IE8 yet.
I must now try and get down to putting them in another site with XWD.
Hi Willie,
IE8 displays the ico favicon and it only takes a few seconds for it to display in the address bar and tab.
Hi, Bill(Soquili)
I still cannot get any page icon for IE8.
I have searched for knowledge to help me understand, but all I found was others complaints about IE8 (and lower versions)'s handling of icons.
Microsoft's pages claim to have solved this in the Release Candidate.
Now, for your two pages and icons, I tried to "Import graphics from Web" of your two images, viz. b.png and xareg256.ico.
The b.png imports OK to WD
The xareg256.ico shows a WD error message (attached screenshot)
I was hoping this could of help to you,:)and maybe someone can comment further on my problem.

Hi Amateur,
The error you see when trying to import the XaReg256.ico is because Web Designer and also Xara Xtreme do not have import filters for the ico file type.
If you want to use a favicon on your website that will display in almost every browser you would need to use an ico filetype. You cannot import nor export that filetype using Web Designer or Xara Xtreme.
You can create your image for a favicon in Web Designer or Xara Xtreme and export it as a png or bitmap, then use another application to convert to the ico file format.
There are many programs that will convert a bmp filetype to an ico filetype. See the google search results for a search I performed while writing this reply.

Hi, Soquili.
Now I'm confused. Both my XX4PRO an XWD help files claim they can import ico file formats. (But not export).:confused:
Hence I expected to be able to import your xareg256.ico. Seeing the error message, I suspected xareg256.ico contained some error.
Prior to this I checked the effect using your (two different) lines namely;
<link rel="SHORTCUT ICON" href="http://btaylor.50megs.com/test/b.png" type="image/x-icon"/>
and;
<link rel="SHORTCUT ICON" href="http://btaylor.50megs.com/XaReg/xareg256.ico"/> respectively :o(hope you don't mind!)
in my WD placeholder, publishing to my harddisk, and checking using FF3 an IE8.
(The results were as before. Bot b.png and xareg256.ico displays as they should in FF3, and none of them in IE8.)
Regards,
amateur
Sorry Amateur, I should have said Xtreme and Web Designer cannot open some newer version ico files that contain larger image sizes.
See attached image.
Any time I try to open an ico that has internal images larger than 48x48 pixels I get an ImproperImageHeader error from Xtreme.
Internet Explorer 8 can and does display the xareg256.ico for the favicon.
See Attached image.
BTW the 256 in the filename for the icon is for the maximum image size within, not the number of colours used. :)
There's a very neat freeware icon editor available here which would work well for companion editing.
I finally got it!
But a curious behavior in IE8 though ;
In WD I "export website" to my harddisk.
It produces index.htm, index_2.htm and the folder index_htm_files.
FileZillaClient uploads them to my website. There I have previously uploaded myicon.ico (produced by IcoFX).
Now, IE8 loads from my website, and displays the icon correctly!:)
But, when loading the file index.htm from my HD into IE8, IE8 does not display the icon at all.:confused:
FF3 has no problems with this.
Anyway, I don't care anymore about strange behavior in IE8.
I have learned a lot, but still don't know the relevance of the term "SHORTCUT ICON" versus "icon", and I also have a notion that the term favicon is treated and used in more special ways in IE8, than is necessary for a page tab and address line display.
Again thank you all for your help and assistance.
Regards,
amateur.
Can get it to work on anything else than chrome!
Can some one tell me what i;m missing?

:mad:
Chrome places the favicon on the page TAB (next to the page title) rather than in the Address field.
It shows fine in Chrome here ;)
Attachment 61662
yep, chrome is fine... but not FF or IE7 nor Safari...
any suggestions?
:confused:
Refresh.
Works in all browsers fine for me :)
Ok, so I read the thread on adding favicons but got very confused by all the info for attempting to add it.
Here is what I did upon the advice I read.
I created a favicon with file ending in .ico
I uploaded it into my file manager using cpanel through my host site. Here is where it gets tricky. Where exactly is the .ico supposed to be located in my folders for the website stuff? No one really specified Exactly Which folder it should be inside of. as an FYI, I had to create a Sub Domain through my current url just so I can test any new website possibilities before making my site live with new content. (keeping my old and current site active).
Within XWD I created a Placeholder by using Rectangle tools as suggested (but no one stated Where the Rectangle for the placeholder should go (if it matters). I went into Utilities and gave it <head> for a name and Added it to the Rectangle placeholder layer. Oh I also created the Rectangle Placeholder as a layer. does it matter what order that layer is in, in the scheme of layers?
I attempted to add the Favicon code some people stated toward the beginning of this thread into the Placeholder HTML area. Is this where it was supposed to go? This is where it gets more tricky... What is the exact code I am to use for .ico Also, it states your URL to be placed before .ico image file name within that code? but this part I did not understand. As I do not know what URL the .ico image resides at other than in a folder somewhere within my website directory in cpanel. On my current website (built with a different Program) I have a favicon on my site, but I used a different method to attach it. SO I am VERY confused.
I would love someone to walk me through it step by simple step please. I am not fully versed in web design & trying to do my best.
Each method I tried from previous posts did not work. Again, it could be placement of the file in my file manager or lack thereof of proper placement... and or it could be the wrong url I am typing in. (I have a feeling it may be the location of the file in directory matched with improper url text. Any help appreciated bcause I've tried everything I could think of, moving the file, changing the url multiple ways, republishing etc. Thanks in advance.

Your favicon can be in any folder of your web site. As for the placeholder code the complete URL for the favicon is to be used.
For example if you created and named your icon myfavicon.ico and placed it in a folder name images.
If your domain name is mywebsite.com the complete URL for the favicon would be http://mywebsite.com/images/myfavicon.ico (just an example and not a real URL)
Remember to give the placeholder for the favicon the name <head> so it will be added to the page you want it to appear. You will need to do this for each page you want the icon to be displayed.
My favicon works on all browsers but IExplorer and have tested it on two different laptops and an IMAC... with 3 different versions...

:mad:
Which version of IE are you using? I'm using IE8 and it shows your icon in the address bar and on the tab.
IE ver 6 in this one...
Internet Explorer 6 will not show a favicon until the site is added to Favorites.
Versions 7 & 8 will show the favicon when the webpage is rendered on screen.
