How do I make my two sided postcard spin? (NOOB)
Hello,
I have just downloaded this program Xara 3D Maker 7 I don't have a clue on what I'm doing if someone could walk me through the steps of making the attached images spin like this reference here
http://img172.imageshack.us/img172/5...tercitytj7.gif
that would be great. If you wanna make $10 through paypal to do the work for me that would be great also.

Re: How do I make my two sided postcard spin? (NOOB)
Welcome to TalkGraphics
You would need to create a solid vector shape the size of the postcard and then apply the bitmap as a texture to each side. Someone in this forum will have to tell you how to do it.
But the bigger question is why do you want to do this? It will create a large file size and would it not be better to present this information in a more coherent manner?
The whole point of this is to get people to see the information about your product and you want to make this as easy as possible for your potential visitors.
And remember, if some of your visitors have slower Internet connections, they will be long gone by the time your animation loads.
Making a simple logo spin in my opinion is mildly annoying. As is anything that is animated for the sake of animation falls into this category. Like putting dots inside the Os in the word LOOK. But as least a logo is a simple object and should load fast enough. But your postcard goes beyond what in my opinion is reasonable.
I realize I sound like an old crank. And frankly that is because I am an old crank. And for me, at any rate, life is too short to wait for a gratuitous animation to load.
Find a more appropriate use for the animation. For example, is there someway the animation could be used to demonstrate what your product does?

Re: How do I make my two sided postcard spin? (NOOB)
While I like spinning logos particularly if they are well done, I agree with Gary that this simply isn't appropriate for the two images you wish to use, because they exist to be read, to present information, not to create a memorable trademark. By all means spin a 3d trademark/logo if it is cleanly done and sufficiently visually interesting (sorry, Gary :-)), but this isn't such a logo, and is not a sensible image (or pair of images) to spin.

Words of wisdom, indeed. People who like building such distractions should ask themselves "If this is a cool and effective way to promote my message or business, why don't successful companies ever use them?". Spinning logos detract from sites, not enhance them.

I have to agree... spinning logos are passe...
Perhaps something like this is a bit better? (made with Designer Pro 7)
Attachment 82311
When you click on it, it will show full-screen, but you can also use a placeholder and make it the size that you need. I included the "Made with Xara..." to make this a sample graphic...
Xara Designer Pro 7 is also available as a trial download and you can make this graphic yourself but without the "Made with Xara..." on it.
Peace

Re: How do I make my two sided postcard spin? (NOOB)
Thanks, Tom
Anything to keep spinning logos minimized is an improvement for everyone. They're not all bad, but it's really only the very special ones that don't seem so generic that they scream "amateur!"
Designer Pro 7 rocks!

Mike - I always make an exception in your case because if you make a logo spin it is going to be a thing of beauty and well worth looking at.

Re: How do I make my two sided postcard spin? (NOOB)
Since this a an X3D forum, and since you have X3D7, I would advise you to create a slide-show in X3D7 rather than use another software.
X3D can do much more than just spin images.

Re: How do I make my two sided postcard spin? (NOOB)
For a small shockwave flash file (website considerations), Designer Pro is better suited than 3D7, in my opinion. Since it is available as a free download to try, there is nothing that really speaks against it.
Yes, this is a Xara 3D thread, but that's not news. ;)
Peace

Re: How do I make my two sided postcard spin? (NOOB)
Hello Salaam
No offense meant...you know that normally, I am one of your biggest fans, but these anims mostly look like kluges. (Think of a car going down the freeway with the doors held closed with duct tape or someone with an air conditioner hanging in their apartment window, but propped up with a stack of old tires.)
The bottom one is the only one that looks remotely "usable" (imo) and the moving parts have off-white backgrounds, which though possibly on purpose, looks like a mistake.
To put it in other words, if someone showed me those and said, "look here what Xara 3D can do", my first thought would be "why would I want to do that?"
Peace

Re: How do I make my two sided postcard spin? (NOOB)
No offence taken James,
They are quick 'Rough examples' for those who already own X3D7. The purpose wasn't to sell the software but to show that other animations are possible. I could have just as easily copied your XGD example but by over doing my examples (although obviously not as nice as yours) I wanted to communicate the the possibilities available with a little imagination and experimentation. I kept the awful yellow lighting just to show how easy it is to alter the colours. I made it 3D also because XGD can not do this so easily either.
If I was to use any animation for such a product, I would choose yours (but made in X3D7) but as I said, my intention was to show that you do not need to buy or use XGD (especially not Pro for such a basic task).
Although I agree that making it spin is not a good idea, I do not believe that zhifi should be made to feel that he has purchased the wrong product.

I would submit a step by step tutorial on how to do it, but I for some reason am having my own problems with X3D7.

While I would do it for $10, I Hate PayPal (they tried to strong arm into my bank account -then told lies about it) -No PayPal here! Tom aka Hwy101

I think you'd have to have no concience if you help inflict the world with more spinning badness.
In terms of advertising bling, visit this thread, to see how to get your point across without looking like a cheap newspaper advert:
http://www.talkgraphics.com/showthre...impler-website
People ask for help to do a lot of things, but it's not always right to help them do the wrong thing. Ironically, the last time I did "the wrong thing" for someone who also offered to pay, it didn't even get a "thank you". Fifteen posts later and the OP has contributed nil besides the original request, leaving the TG community squabbling over the merits of spinning logos!

Re: How do I make my two sided postcard spin? (NOOB)
Right or wrong, good or bad the question remains. I believe someone should show it spinning just to show why it is a bad idea.
I noticed that zhifi has no Xara software listed but says X3D7 in the post.
"I don't have a clue on what I'm doing if someone could walk me through the steps of making the attached images spin like this reference here"
zhifi does not appear to be asking for someone to do it for free, merely asking for information on how.
"People ask for help to do a lot of things, but it's not always right to help them do the wrong thing. That could very well be the case here, but we are here to help not to pass judgement.
So zhifi it is basically page flipping. So you need a page break with each page having a different texture. In this case the two different images you supplied.
pauland I do have a conscience but I also want to help as best I can.
zhifi, there have been many good suggestions on what you could do but spinning this is not a good option. While I agree with pauland, I would hope you would not misuse spinning. Still for your own information how to get a two sided spin is something you should know.

I have shown how people can get a sales message across without using a spinning advert that looks like it was designed more for a print small ad than the web.
Zhifi, are you still with us?

Re: How do I make my two sided postcard spin? (NOOB)
Pauland,
I respect your viewpoint.
You will notice I didn't post any real help either. If zhifi seriously wants to make that thing spin then he/she would find a way. It could have just have been an idea zhifi was toying with and really wanted to know. This could simply be spam.

Re: How do I make my two sided postcard spin? (NOOB)
Larry, I actually feel a bit guilty about taking such a strong stance. I'm sure if zhifi is still wanting the spinning logo, he'll get some advice.

Re: How do I make my two sided postcard spin? (NOOB)
You are entitled to your opinion pauland. I probably just have a different way of looking at things, maybe not the right way just different.
As James says "Peace"

Re: How do I make my two sided postcard spin? (NOOB)
The OP has not been back to the forums since the initial post was made. Does not look like anyone's advice was seen, obviously not commented upon by the OP. ;)

Hello
Re: "Larry, I actually feel a bit guilty about taking such a strong stance."
Thank you that you said that...your stock just went up. ;)
Re: "The OP has not been back to the forums since the initial post was made..."
No, but there have been over four dozen views of various files related with this post, so even if the original poster never came back, it would be an exaggeration to say that no one might have gained from the discussion anyways. I have certainly benefited from advice/info given in threads that I actually had nothing to do with, post-wise.
Re: Spinning graphics
We all (okay, pretty much all) see them as passe, however the fact that someone comes along quite often and asks about them or how to do them shows that there is some demand for them. I think that I would bet money that taking logos or text and making it spin is one of the things that is most often done with Xara 3D, sad as that sounds. In some ways, buying or downloading the trial of Xara 3D and making something spin is a rite of passage. :)
To quote Larry, quoting me, Peace ;)

Re: How do I make my two sided postcard spin? (NOOB)
I think web design (including spinning logos) could do with a bit of psychological analysis by the researchers.
Generally I think web sites mostly fail by people focussing on what their company sells, rather than building empathy with their client and focussing on what the company does for the client. In that vein, spinning and sliding stuff is often more about the website designer "showing off" or even the client being so caught up by the technology that they think the moving bling automatically engenders a positive response by visitors. They don't consider that it may make the visitor leave sooner or fail to see why they should engage.
All that said, there is a certain culture out there that thinks spinning logos are cool and want them. What I'm not sure about is whether this is just misguided developer or client vanity, or whether there is truly a section of society that is actually drawn to sites showing these spinning things (probably the same sector of society that likes websites to look like the small ads page).
I firmly believe that the alternatives to the crude bling are superior when it comes to engaging site visitors, but I'm prepared to believe that there may be some society sectors where spinning stuff is seen as attractive. You can often see this in footbal club fans who seem to love the spinning logos, yet the clubs that they follow would never use such a device.
I sometimes see similar things with regard to colour pallettes. Sometimes I see colour combinations as garish, crude and clashing and everything tells me that they should not work, yet I do recognise that often these correspond with sites coming not just from western cultures, but eastern and southern cultures where colour pallettes in society are bolder and brighter. What isn't so clear is whether some of the colour combinations are also perceived as poor in such cultures, just as we have horrific colour combinations/designs in western cultures.
Sorry for the extended thoughts about this, but my opposition to spinning bling is as much about trying to make people think about what they are doing rather than following some trend because they've seen some awful website with flashing and spinning bling that they think is a good model to follow.
I think a psychology project into website bling and attitudes to bling is long overdue!
Right, that's my therapy over. No more chasing spinning logos for a while.

James I was not saying there has not been anyone helped from the discussion, only that the OP has not taken time to revisit the forums. Discussion about helping that individual has not provided any assistance to him/her.
Sadly this is the case more often than we like to think about.
Fortunately there are forum participants that do read and post comments and or questions about the content of these threads.

Re: How do I make my two sided postcard spin? (NOOB)
I agree, Bill
The original poster might never actually benefit from info that is directed towards them, if they don't come back and read it. When one posts in the Forum, they are, of course, responding to the poster personally, but also to everyone, generally. This also means that long-dead posts, if there is something new relating to techniques discussed therein, should be resurrected...if the original post still has some relevancy. I think we are in basic agreement about all of this...
We can just extend the (generous of our time/effort) help and then hope that whomever can benefit from it, sucks it up and does something with it.
In cases where the original poster is asking for some particular thing, I think viable options to that, especially if they are easier or more elegant should also be allowed into the discussion.
Peace
James

I agree, but at the same time the question should be answered and if it is a bad idea, why is it a bad idea. Many people would benefit from that information as well, including me.
