I thought maybe we could have a thread where we post self-portraits. So here it is. I hope your self-portrait will join me or I'll be very lonely.
Please include your name and where you live.

Never recognised you with the wig on Ross. I'll try to join you shortly.

Nice picture Ross. Are supposed to draw our portrait with Xara? Looks like youve done a photo and some bitmap work in Xara. It does have nice sketch effect to it. Did you use some plugin filters ?
Mine was made in Xara using the 'Sketcher' plug-in from littleinkpot.com. Producing it really depended on Xara's transparency effects -- it isn't just straightforward output from the plugin. For the illustration Xara was functioning more like Photoshop than a vector illustration toolbox.
I would hope if others contribute self-portraits to this thread they'll produce them however they see fit --- bitmap manipulation or vectored -- or both! Of course Xara should be involved since this is the Xara Gallery :)
Regards, Ross
I started this one some time ago and realized I wasn't sure if I had the "gift" for portraiture, am pretty sure I don't have the patience, but I sure had fun with it!
Mickie
Hey Mickie! -- Until I just saw your portrait I didn't know you are a woman. (Until you saw mine you probably didn't know I have a beard ;) -- Egg didn't know I had hair because a few years back I manipulated pictures making myself cue-ball bald). I've never tried doing a vector portrait ---- it must be a big challenge.
Regards -- Ross
Very nice use of the 'Sketcher' plug-in, Ross. Makes a good portrait.
Mickie, I like your portrait. I'm sure it gives a good resemblance without too much detail.
This is a slightly updated version of the self portrait I did several years ago. I'm afraid I have more gray hair now
Here I am!
My portrait is shown at the top-left of all my posts. I'll try and do a bigger one, but me and my 99 mates are still busy trying to write the complete works of Shakespeare. :D
Well, it's been a long time since I last did this, and I hate my own appearance anyway, but I've just produced a new self-portrait, traced by hand from a photo. Apart from simplifying it down to a few lines and shapes, the only artistic license I've taken was to make my teeth look better than they really are - no 5mm gap at the top!

Some great looking portraits here so far. Very cool. I will get working on one so you all can see how I am looking. Actually I look the same as my avatar but that photo is a year old. ;)
think that looks somewhat like me.

Sorry for the repeat, but friends noticed that my hair is parted on the other side and everyone says I have a round puddgy nose. Also I noticed, too late of course, that Ross wanted name and where we live. Here are my corrections.
Hi All,
You will prob. rremember this one back in July when I first posted it, haven't soften up the hair line at the top of the forehead so it still looks like a mask.
One of these days when I have time I will correct it and give my face a bit more age.
There are a lot of great self-portraits on here! Some are simple and effective and some are more complex, but all are unique and creative. (I like the variety!) Well, I'm not to the point of actually sketching a picture, so I cheated and used a photo... but played with it with filters & such on Xara Xtreme and did the text with Xara3D... The pic was taken quite a few years ago (when I actually had a bit more hair... um.. ok, a lot more hair!), but I like to use the picture in a humorous way... I thought it would make a perfect self-portrait, which should reflect a bit of a person's character. :D
OOOPS!!!! (forgot this part...)
I'm Craig D. and I live in Salina, Kansas :)
welp, all i have right now is something i made a while ago in jasc psp7 and animation shop, but it pretty well depicts me as i am (unfortunately)
still have the glimmer in the eye...

Reply to Drifter just above this post.... I think it's great! I had a laugh... very creative!
Nice thread Ross!
Yes, fun thread.
Everyone's posts have been super.
For those who want a clue to the hair. Drawing hair is shall we say "HARD"?!? New plugin which
comes with Alien Skin Eye Candy 2000 is called "Fur". So technically speaking I have fur for hair.
And just like the real stuff, it is hard to control. Bad hair day, put my hat on.
Wow, Sally, that is really really cool. It is beautiful. I must suggest, however, that you consider ironing your shirt before you go out into public... people might talk...
hahahahahahaha
EXCELLENT ART!!!!!
Who has time for ironing if you draw as much as I do?
(1) Photo was taken 35 years ago (I'm 5 in this pic)
(2) Just played with filters - no actual drawing involved
Happy New Year

An artist I'm not.
Min, I really like the effects in your portrait (of your beginnings... :)) Is there any chance you may share what kinds of filters you used? Keep up the good work!
Min, I agree, the filter use is wonderful. What did you use and what settings. Very sweet picture, BTW.
Thanks Craig & Sally
I used the poster edges filter (under artistic) from Photoshop. It's a bit hit and miss using photoshop filters in Xara - varies with the version of Photoshop: not all filters show and no guarantee they will work when they do show! Anyway, I pointed Xara to my 5.5 version of PS and a number of the filters do work.
Basically the image consists of 2 layers with the same photo on each layer. Top layer has filter applied and then a flat transparency of about 40% so unfiltered photo shows through and softens the effect a bit.
Here's another - same method, different filter: pointillism (Virtual Painter).
Happy New Year

Ok, since installing the cd, this is my first picture (eheh seeing as I lost all my previous trial pictures due to my error). But I wanted to note this is my very first go at a 'human' picture.
You gotta handle on using those vector tools. Way to go, Ace.
Welp, i took a great deal of time and xara'd my face:

here are the lines involved:
http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c2...dlinesonly.jpg
I need to learn WHEN to use layers. There were so many lines in this thing, I'm sure layers would have helped, but i also needed to regularly interact with different "levels"
I would also like to know WHY sometimes when using a bezier control handle the adjacent side pops out and has to be moved back in. Am I doing something wrong or is this the way it is?
I've been framed!!!!!

That's Great!
Drifter,
You have obviously put a lot of effort into this and you have achieved a skilled and realistic effect. Bet you too are pleased!
Drifter
Well done :)
Amanda
Thanks Min, Spondoolix, and Craig. I'm just starting down the path of learning. And this particular path was quite frightening as i had to look at my own face so much.
hahahahahahahahahha
Wow, Drifter, you really came up with something there.
It is hard to know when to use layers. If starting with a photograph, it is best to put that on the bottom layer and an identical one on the top. That way you don't have to shut down all layers in the middle to have a look-see at your reference photo, just turn the top layer back on for a peek.
That must have been a bit uncomfortable, sticking your head in the scanner. I know my face felt rather flat for days afterwards. (Just kidding).
Well, given it is the holiday season, i'm sure there are people out there sticking a lot worse things in their scanners and thankfully NOT posting those in here. :)
Sally, can you remark re. my bezier control handles question?
Hi Drifter,
Very nice work on the portrait.
Xara Xtreme supports two type of joins (nodes) Smooth and Cusp. The Smooth joins are the type that have the behaviour you mentioned. Move one side and the other moves in the opposite direction. The Cusp joins are the ones that each side moves independently.
I don't recall specifically what are the defaults as I learned to edit the registry to make it use Cusp joins.
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Xara\XaraXtreme\Options \ShapeEditorTool
Change CreateCurved to a value of 0 and change CreateCusp to a value of 1.
These settings can be overridden using the toolbar and the Shape Editor Tool. See the example in the attachment.
Why do you think I just used a filter on my picture?!!!??? (Will learn how to draw a face with someone else's picture! hehehehe!.... that is, someday!) ;)Quote:
