I am loving my new software program
Hi All
I have been using expression web for years. Editing was difficult. I`ve had Xara for a few days and
have migrated my website to the xara servers. At least some of the pages. It might be a good time
for a review before I get too far along. I make no pretense to be a web professional but help in the
style and layout department would be appreciated.
The old site: http://www.woodsolutions.com/
The New site: http://o7w3e4.xara.hosting/index.htm

Re: I am loving my new software program
Hi Barry
Good work so far.
Any new websites posted in this forum automatically get put in moderation until one of us moderators comes along and says, Oh hey, a moderated post. And then we approve it.
So if you don't see your thread appear instantly, that's the reason.
If I might make a suggestion. Your banner would be a lot cleaner if you get rid of the globe and just center your logo (maybe even make it a bit bigger) on the banner.

Re: I am loving my new software program
Barry, you can rename your http://{gibberish}.xara.hosting/ URL by going to the Xara Online Control Centre: https://www.xara-online.com/us/control-center.267.html and under Domain click My Domains and changing the {gibberish} under Your Subdomain.

Re: I am loving my new software program
Hi Mr Acorn
Why do I need to follow your advice. I`m using the xara servers as a temporary loaction for testing.
Gibberish ...sounds insulting. I need layout and design input not hosting help.
Thanks...I guess!

Re: I am loving my new software program
Hi Barry, your on your way to a nice website, stay with it.

Re: I am loving my new software program
Acorn was suggesting that you can change the name of your xara.hosting account. Which as you explained is not necessary because you are using it as a staging ground only. We get it.

I was coming from a client-designer perspective. So you are on the phone to a client and you've staged your design to o7w3e4.xara.hosting and you want to showcase your work to secure the deal.
Now get the client to type in the above. Far easier to spell out golash.xara.hosting (shows it's related to you) or even woodsolutions.xara.hosting (shows you care). Both are an expression of "layout and design".
In your case, you are both the designer and the client. I only found this in http://www.woodsolutions.com/diywoodmachines.html.
{gibberish} is my immediate spam filter alert - if I can't pronounce it why would I be minded to visit it?
You did not initially explain that Xara was a "temporary loaction for testing". My suggestion would work for you and certainly for those that just intend to use the Xara web service for their sites.
Regarding your site, I found the detail in the original fascinating and I can see how CNC machinists would find this enticing. Have you considered how to attract customers to your primary products? Selling wood solutions would seem to be essential.

That`s the hard part. I have contemplated placing ads in woodworking publications. It is amazing the cost of advertising for the space they provide.
I have done posts in forums related to woodworking and made mention of my two software programs. Sometimes
that is not appreciated by the forum users. Any thoughts on google Adwords. Good, Bad.... too expensive.
Do have a question related to the navbar. In the new site I have a thick line under the navbar. I would like to change
it to match the silver color. How do I get a precise color match of the nav.

Select the line, then drag the eyedropper icon over the color you wish to copy.
Ads can be expensive. If you can put your thoughts into words, and you have some compelling information or techniques that is of interest to the publication, suggest an article to the editor. This is one way to get your name and contact across to the readers. And participating in appropriate forums is another good way to get your qualifications and contact information out to your market.

Thanks for the info. Very good point regarding an article to the editor.!

In your browser Address Bar, you will see something like: view-source:http://www.woodsolutions.com/Doorcut...ramScreen.html.
Copy and paste this without the prefix view-source: into Xara's File > Import from Web address...
Publish as a PDF or a separate sub-site to your main site.
Can you update your TG Profile to describe what Xara software you are using?

Re: I am loving my new software program
Hi
I added a photo gallery. It seems the images are out of focus and cut off. The wizard did not mention any details
on how to deal with size issues. Should I be using a different gallery, there are alot of options at your content page
http://o7w3e4.xara.hosting/cabinet_gallery.htm
Thanks for the last answer!

Some of the images you are expanding are only thumbnails so you need the originals.
Start again and drop and scale all the images you want onto the page.
Select all and then apply Web Properties > Image Photo Pop-up settings.
You can add the white rectangles and shadows later.
This is not the usual approach but explaining it is far harder.

Hi
That`s embarrassing I should have known better. In the directory, I could not tell the difference in size.
Thanks again

Re: I am loving my new software program
Hi
I never liked my help file software. But I do like the fact that its in an iframe. I`m thinking about recreating my HTML help
files in Xara. Just because the software is just so amazingly easy to edit. Are there any problems with this scenario.
Should I use a template? I just don't know how to move forward. A search on the web does not show a lot of info on the iframe.

Barry, IFRAMES do not allow easy searching across the pages. Create your Help file as a PDF and use a Table of Contents for different sections. Far cleaner, lower maintenance.

Re: I am loving my new software program
Hi
Just added a download button. When the mouse moves over it. It changes size. Never saw this effect before.
Can this be customized. http://o7w3e4.xara.hosting/doorcut.htm

Re: I am loving my new software program
Barry, the button loads another button below the original.
Here's how to do it. The button on mouse-over is slightly smaller than that on the mouse-off layer and also has a white rectangular box below it to hide the mouse-off button below it.

Delete both and start again as this will be the quicker than trying to recover form whatever you did.

Re: I am loving my new software program
Hi All
I'm a bit concerned. Yesterday I was editing the lowermost section of my web page. Company name, address etc.
I added a bit of text under the default text. I believe I then did a preview. As they say, the sh*$#@ hit the fan.
A unrecoverable error dialogue popped up. Locked up Xara and I still haven`t found my current version of the site.
I have many backups. If I want to open a backup what is the file type in the backup folder that loads the web back
in the development environment?

Re: I am loving my new software program
Barry,
Go:
File / Open Recent Files / Backups (at the bottom of the list)
look for the correct file name
choose the one with the latest date
Open and resave
The filetype will be .xar or .web
Best of luck ;)

Re: I am loving my new software program
Hi Egg Bramhill
That worked fine. I thought I lost my recent work. As a precaution I backed up
the most recent version to one drive.
Thanks Barry

Hi All
Moving along with the site. I have a new slideshow control placed. I run into the same problem with each control.
How to deal with resizing and out of focus images. Hoping for a suggestion.

Re: I am loving my new software program
Barry,
I'm only slightly newer in Xara Land than you, but I was running into the identical problem last week, and fixed it by not following the slider instructions in the dialog:
- FIrst approach: dragging image from Explorer window into slider container gave me a blurred image every time. Looked identical to your site.
- Switched to: Select slider image > right click > selected "replace image from file" > navigated to subject image > clicked INSERT. Problem disappeared. I have no idea why.
HTH. Worth a try. Or, select the slider boilerplate image > From upper menu, select FILE > IMPORT, and remainder of steps are same as #2 above. Eventually, I got nice sharp images.

Re: I am loving my new software program
Hey Jack
Bad luck for me. Very certain I followed your instructions. Last time I was inserting thumbnails by mistake.
That caused the problem. I`ll try again.
Thanks

Re: I am loving my new software program
I found my original images on google drive. Downloaded them and added to the slideshow. Now they are clear.
I have no idea why.
-
Re: I am loving my new software program
Tis a mystery...but, glad it's working for you.
-
Re: I am loving my new software program
The Xara application will have imported the image into the Bitmap gallery.
If you dropped the image on the page, it probably also created a thumbnail at a much lower resolution.
If you add the wrong one to the slider, the upscaling will show up the lower resolution.

Hi All
To backup my website. I created a desktop folder and exported the site to the new folder. Is this
considered standard practice. Just wondering if xara can then load the site for editing.

You need to save your XAR / WEB file safely; this is the only way to edit your site.

Ok.Point me the right direction.

Re: I am loving my new software program
Is this it for full backups.
You change the amount of time the program waits before performing the backup and the amount of revisions the program keeps of one document. These options can be found in Utilities > Options > Backup.

I have an external drive where all of my xite files are stored. Then, on a regular basis, I back those all up to the cloud. Worst case, I'm going to have something that is a little bit out of date, and might have to be freshened. Also, anytime I'm going to make fairly significant changes, I do a SAVE AS, and give it a naming scheme which tells me which is the latest. One way or another, I'm going to have a backup copy somewhere. I live in tornado country, which is partially the reason for backing up to Box. If my computer goes sailing off to Illinois, then the external drives will no doubt go along for that ride. I'd have a cloud backup to resort to. Just remember that computers crash, external drives go "poof", and files get corrupted. If it's mission critical, then as Acorn says, make sure you've got a good backup system.
