Please please help re Xara Web Designer 6 and Deleting Browsing History
To all you experts out there.
I've run into a litlle bit of a problem. In fact, it's a BIG problem for me.
After I designed my ebsite, i published it with no problem.
I viewed it on an external computer on the internet, it looked good.
The problem arises when i edit on my site and then republish. (I have used FileZille and the internal ftp publishing in XARA, it makes absolutely no difference to the question and problem I'm about to pose:
when i go view the website again, after editing on it (whether i delete ALL the files on the hosting side ... whether I republish the entire site to replace everyting on the hosting site, or whether i just use the option to just update the files that have changed) ... none of everything ive just said, make a difference to this that happens:
When i go view the site on the internet, whether i use my pc to view it, or whether i view it on an external pc ... the site comes thru looking corrupted. THE ONLY THING THAT FIXES THIS, is if i go delete my browsing history. And then i go back onto the site, and it's perfect. Which tells me it's being hosted correctly. What's happening here, is that once a computer (any computer), has viewed my site the first time (on the internet), the any subsequent changes i make on my site, and re-publish, then the viewers view externaly, is corrupt. The ONLY explanation i can come to, is that within the PC, any PC, be it my PC, or the viewers PC out there in the world, the computer is storing something in itself ... and this MUST be because the designing program XARA, is not telling putting some sort of data within the html files, to tell a viewing computer, to completely clear its browsing history, so that ONLY the new files will be viewed, when accessed via the internet. I tell you, i sit with my hands in my hair, I have no idea how to solve this, i have written many e-mails, and no-one seems to have the answer. And it's not as if from within Xara, that one can see anything. i.e. when i do the design, it looks absolutely perfect, then i export it (deleting the hosting files in exostance first, or not deleting them, makes no difference to the outcome) .... once the site is publish for a second time, and files have changed, then when it comes back into the computer from the internet, it views corrupted, UNLESS ONE DELETES THE COMPUTERS BROWSING HISTORY. This should not happen, because who has to delete their browsing history first, in order to view a website correctly? PLEASE SOMEONE :-) PLEASE COME UP WITH THE ANSWER FOR ME. And just to add, the fact that AFTER ONE DELETES THE BROWSING HISTORY, and then goes onto the site again, and then the site COMES THRU PERFECTLY, tells me that the host is holding ALL the correct data, ALL THE CORRECT TEXT, ALL THE CORRECT IMAGES ... it;s not as if the images sizes are at all incorrect ... IF ONE DELETES THE BROWSING HISTORY, the site comes thru correctly ... until i edit again on my site in XARA, republish, and again the site shows incorrectly, until i delete my browsing history again .... what is going on? PLease someone, help me:-) Thanks so much. gleNNscheun.com gleNNscheun@gmail.com

Re: Please please help re Xara Web Designer 6 and Deleting Browsing History
It's such a long post it's hard to read.
I think that you are updating the site and your browser cache is saving the old site so you are getting a bit of a mishmash.
All browsers cache the content of pages - it speeds up your internet access. In practice web developers learn to clear the cache to view changes, or force a page refresh in the browser.
It's not something users normally see and most web developers test first then only update the main site when the design is ready.
When explaining problems, fewer words are better than a long ramble, and no, WE DON'T NEED NO CAPITALS to understand.

Re: Please please help re Xara Web Designer 6 and Deleting Browsing History
Thanks Pauland for your reply. But i can tell you, that every person i've spoken to who is viewing this website of mine, after a edit by me on my side, tells me its showing corrupted. So how then within my design, do i place a command within my design, to tell the viewing computer to refresh its browsing history (only regarding Xara files and my website). What you saying makes sense, but what is happening now ... is my website is needing ... on all other computers and mine, for the browsing history to first be deleted, in order for the site to be viewed correctly. What, if anything, am i doing wrong, and what is the answer, to correct this? Im going through the correct procedures, in the design, in the publishing, in everything as far as i know, and yet others are telling me the site is coming thru wrong, from day to day ... then they clear their own browsing history, and then it's perfect, so something fom my side, needs to be fixed. Can you help me? PS. as regarding testing first before publishing, it looks absolutely perfect on my side, i do a preview, it's perfect, so i export what i see as a perfect design. And it must be exporting correctly, because when it comes through from the internet ... (once the viewer clears his/her browsing history), then the site is perfect, so the site is being exported correctly. I don't know what's going on here... it really is frustrating. I could show you what i mean ... if you were to view my site now ... then give me ten minutes, and i change something myside, and i republish, and if you then logged out and logged in, and went to my site agian, it would come through corrupted. then, if you, on yr side, without me doing anything more on my side, if you cleared your browsing history, and relogged in seconds later, it would be perfect ... so somehow, a command within the design, to tell a remote computer, not to in anyway access what is stored in cache on that pc, needs to be implemented, otherwise, an external out there pc, is always going to access precvious cache data in its browsing history, casuing my site to be view corrupted. I am so frustreated. It's a weid problem, one that shouldnt even be happening. Sorry for the long reply, but i have to write this down, so that others can fully understand ... someone will have an answer for me. Please help if you can. Thanks so much for your reply, www.gleNNscheun.com

Give us the URL and then maybe we'll get to see the problem.
I'm not going to read the rest of the post - it's too long.

Re: Please please help re Xara Web Designer 6 and Deleting Browsing History
Glenn, please post the URL to your site.

Re: Please please help re Xara Web Designer 6 and Deleting Browsing History
Pressing F5 usually fixes things... the page just needs to be refreshed.
I use Filezilla to upload files. there is no need to delete the client side and server side files every time you upload. If you do you need to make sure you delete the folder called index.html_files on the server side. If you end up with more than one of these on the server side there's no telling what sort of corruptions can occur.

I can press f5 a thousand times. must the viewer on the other side of the world also press f5? should i tell everyone who looks at my site to press F5? The website views absolutely perfectly in the design, i publish it, i edit it now and again, and it is coming through wrongly on the other side of the world. This is what i need an answer to. You say it makes no difs if i delete files the server side or not, yet I DO, i delete ALL files, so theres no chance of having more than one of any index_html files folder, yet the problem persists. Im very frustrated. Thank you for trying to help. Please help me. Thanks. I want to know if there's something I'm doing wrong, and how to correct it.

Remember ... when you view it the first time, it's going to view perfectly, the problem comes in when i republish it tomorrow, after making some changes, and then when you go back onto my site, it will show up corrupted. And then if you delete your browsing history, and re-view it 5 seconds later, it will show perfectly again. www.gleNNscheun.com

Re: Please please help re Xara Web Designer 6 and Deleting Browsing History
Works fine here, but if you update the pages very often, and want to make sure that it always loads the current version you might try to add this code:
<META HTTP-EQUIV="PRAGMA" CONTENT="NO-CACHE">
Make an object and name it '<head>' and place the above code in the HTMLplaceholder box.

Re: Please please help re Xara Web Designer 6 and Deleting Browsing History
Glenn, bjornkn has given you a good suggestion. Currently your website is not showing up with a valid index page.
It's better to keep your posts short and not repeated. Thanks for your private emails but please keep your questions on the forum.

Re: Please please help re Xara Web Designer 6 and Deleting Browsing History
Glenn - NO MORE PRIVATE EMAILS.
Your site is looking good.
Thanks.

Hey thanks so muchbjornkn, where and how do i add this code (where i mean), i'm designing with Xara Web Designer 6 ? Thanks again

Re: Please please help re Xara Web Designer 6 and Deleting Browsing History
Thanks Pauland, i just sent the e-mails just so you could see the images ... i thought it would be good for you to see what i see .... i mean in FileZilla etc and in an earlier post you said you wanted the url so you could see the problem... but the problem wouldnt be seen in the URL the first time ... the first time it always shows right. Thank you for all your help, and for saying the site is looking good. Now i must just find out where and how to put this code in, and hopefully all will be fixed :-). Just as a matter of interest, i wonder why Xara is not inserting this code by itself ... i mean, why should i as a laymen just using the program .... to design and publish, why do i have to go the technical route :-). But so I learn, am so greatful for all you guys and gals help. Thank you so much :-)

Re: Please please help re Xara Web Designer 6 and Deleting Browsing History
oh, i see you wrote "Make an object and name it '<head>' and place the above code in the HTMLplaceholder box".... but im still not quite sure how to do this. can you maybe just explain just a little more. Thank you for your help :-)
-
Re: Please please help re Xara Web Designer 6 and Deleting Browsing History
i don't know what you mean when you say create an object? do u mean in the design itself, and what kind of an object, and what and where is the HTMLpaceholder box? Thank you :-)
-
Re: Please please help re Xara Web Designer 6 and Deleting Browsing History
Draw a rectangle (or any other object).
It may be drawn off the page, but it will not be visible anyway.
Right-click it and select 'Name...'
Write: <head> in the 'Apply name' box and click 'Add' button
Right-click object again and select 'Web properties...'
In the 'Web properties' dialog select 'Placeholder' tab
In the big textbox 'Replace with HTML code' write the html code that you want to add. In this case that would be that <meta> tag.
Because the object is named <head> the code will be placed inside the <head> tag, which is where <meta> tags should go.
Without the <head> name the html code would end up inside the <body> tag.

oh we have a saying ... in a South African language called Afrikaans, which says: "Jy's n stêr!!!"
Translated, it means, "You're a star!!!"
Thank you so much, I've just done what you said, will save my future designs with this rectangle in them :-). Thank you so so much :-) gleNN gleNNscheun@gmail.com

Re: Please please help re Xara Web Designer 6 and Deleting Browsing History
A question:
Is there a command one can put into a website, to tell a computer, to clear the cache, with regards to all files pertaining to the website in question. I tell you why i ask this ... coz i still seem to be having the problem, that once sum1 has viewed my website, and then viewed an edited version of the website, and then, now views this new last one with the meta no cache command ... am i understanding correctly, that all this command does from now on, is it doesnt cache the files in a remote pc, however, those people who have already viewed my site, now have cache in their systems ... which for some or othe reason, still gets "accessed by their computers", when viewing my site ... STILL coming up with corruption in the viewing. The only logical explanantion i can see for this, is that existing cache still lies in their systems, so one way for me, if i knew everyone who ahs already viewed my site, would be for me to tell them to clear their cache, by deleting their existing browsing history. But not everyone wants to delete their history, they have valuable info stored in it, so now their pc's are still seeing the corrupted images ... is there a command to just simnply delete ALL existing cache pertaining to THIS website, and then the no cache command, i assume, stops cache from further going into the viewers pc? Thanks
-
Re: Please please help re Xara Web Designer 6 and Deleting Browsing History
the other thing i want to ask is: must this no cache rectangle be in all the pages of the website, or does it only need just the one in the home (index) page? Thanks

Re: Please please help re Xara Web Designer 6 and Deleting Browsing History
I have had the same problem - just did not know that others viewing the site had the same problem and would have to "refresh" the page as I do.
I'll be honest with you - this is totally ridicules. I have NEVER had this problem with any other web site I go to so why does Xara not do automatically what it would appear other design programs are doing?
This, other "bugs - problems" and a comment I read a while back that, "Xara does not play well with others" or something like that does not give on a warm and fuzzy feeling about actually using this program to design a web site. - jb

Re: Please please help re Xara Web Designer 6 and Deleting Browsing History
No - I did not realize that others were having the same problem so made no effort to try to solve it. I don't even know where to start but since I only have this problem on my Xara site, it is obviously something other design programs have found a way to solve and do it behind the site itself. Come on, Xara - fix this problem. - jb

The other programs don't do any more or less than Xara. The differrence is that Xara makes it easy for you to layout your pages and takes control of all the hassle to do with graphic images. Because it takes control and may resize or process these for you, it numbers them. When you change a layout or one or more images, the numbering of the images may change. If you make wholesale changes then your website conent for image "99.png" may be changing and if the web page is in the users cache the page will look muddled.
The other web design programs make you do all the work and small changes don't result in changing the graphics names or images.
This problem was mentioned in post #2 on this thread and the OP has taken some time to catch on.
I don't know of any web design software that automatically refreshes the users cache on every visit - it's bad for performance. Most web developers don't keep altering the site many times per day.
You can blame Xara for the problem, but it has nothing to do with a bug in their software. It would probably be better if they supplied an option to always refresh the page, but it really shouldn't be used as a default behaviour.

I made the comment about Xara not playing well with others. Web developers need to realise that Xara hides a lot of complication from them. Other programs give you complete freedom and you need the skill and knowledge of the underlying technology to use them.
I'm not really aware of bugs in Xaras web generation, only misunderstanding and assumptions made by those who don't really understand the underlying technology but want to go beyond the standard facilities offered by the software.
Keep to what the software does well and you can have a warm and fuzzy feeling. Try using it like it's Dreamweaver, then expect difficullties.

Pauland. It doesnt help. All the writings and all the explaining and all said this far:
And now I WILL USE CAPS:
I bought a program to design websites and put them on the internet.
BUT IT IS ABSOLUTRELY NO GOOD IF THE SITE I SIT AND LOOK AT, LOOKS PERFECT, AND THE SITE THAT OTHERS ARE VIEWING, FOR NO MATTER WHAT REASON, page number changes, whatever one can come up with ... lack of no-cache coding ....whatever .... IT IS USELESS IF THE user can't see the site properly.
I'm upset now yes because its just talk talk talk ... but the facts are, that I can't get a website to display properly on sumone elses computer. And i am not the only one. I have always sung XARA's praises, that is why i bought Xara, and only Xara, but in this case the facts speak for themselves, There IS a PROBLEM, if not to call it a bug, then call it whatever one wants, but we/us, who are experiencing this, are disappointed, I DON'T KNOW OF ANY WEBSITE ANYWHERE IN THIS UNIVERSE OR BEYOND, where one has to "refresh" before one can look at page. It IS ridiculous, as the previous poster has said. AND YOU KNOW WHAT PAULAND, YOU SAY i mustnt use CAPS, becasue you CAN understand, but my CAPS are there becasue i am frustrated BECAUSE people don't listen. It's great to come up with reasoning, all i bl**dy ask for, is for an ANSWER to this, THERE IS A PROBLEM .... YES, ramblings by me, of literally pages and pages, but STILL NO ANSWER. If i had gotten an answer after the first writing i wrote, it wouldnt be necessary to write after that, would it? No. The closest i have to an answer to this corrupt viewing, was by byorn, and i have followed his instructions. But no matter how user friendly Xara is, if it doesnt sort this out, then it is useless .... I'd like to have a chat with their developers. And you know what, i think I will. I paid good money for this program, and i expect it to work. No offence Pauland. Take care.

Re: Please please help re Xara Web Designer 6 and Deleting Browsing History
Glenn, if the problem were as BIG as YOU suggest nobody would use the software.
Post #14 was quite explicit and really solved your problem as you have acknowledged, so "STILL NO ANSWER"? I think not.
Nobody is calling themselves experts.
CAPS IS JUST BAD MANNERS, or just plain PATRONISING.
Good luck Glenn.

Re: Please please help re Xara Web Designer 6 and Deleting Browsing History
There's another <meta> tag you might try too:
<META HTTP-EQUIV="expires" CONTENT="0">
It may or may not work, depending on the browser?
It tells the browser to check if there is a newer version available than the one in the cache, and then is supposed to load the new one.
I just looked at your page again and found that it was scrambled. What happened was that the main picture was moved to the first menu button.
A simple refresh/F5 fixed the problem, and that is really the preferred/common way to fix such problems.
You may tell Xara to give the main image a specific name, by adding a name to it, like 'filename="main_image"'
Then it will not be renumbered and mixed up with the other exported images even if you rearrange/edit your site.
BTW, I have never had such problems when changing things. Every time I've uploaded some changes of course I need to F5/refresh to see the changes.
I have never gotten any images moving around into buttons etc, even though I usually don't add filenames to my images, but let Xara choose a number.
And when visitors come to the page for the first time they will see it correctly anyway. I think most browsers by default flushes their cache when closed?
Using those meta tags may cause all your pages to reload every time, even when going back and forth between them. That may be more of a nuisance than appearing scrambled now and then (after an update).
-
Re: Please please help re Xara Web Designer 6 and Deleting Browsing History
Thank you so much Bjornkn, i really appreciate all your help to help me. Thank you so much.
So you saw now what it does ... the scrambling i mean, but the wierd thing is, pressing F5 on my side doesnt fix it for me. The only thing that fixes it is to delete the browsing history.
Bjornkn, the only thing i have left to ask is this: why, of every website that i have ever visited, be it google, or any website, i have NEVER had this problem before with any website, i have never in 5years pressed the F5 button, or even had to press it .... but now, it seems, i have to tell every client of mine to use f5. It is just crazy. Ive never had to use f5 for any website, but mine so far CANNOT be used without f5, or deleting browsing history. Im using internet explorer 8, and the browsing history/cache, on exit, does not seem to be cleared. There may very well be a place where one can set that, but even if there is, that doesnt solve my problem for the other people in the world who are viewing my site. I am very disheartened and sad that still this issue is not resolved. It is so embarressing for me, for people to log onto my website and see a scrambled picture ... there are many out there who dont know about F5 or even about deleting a browsing history ... i will try the other code you suggest ... thank you so much for your help. Thank you thank you. gleNN

Re: Please please help re Xara Web Designer 6 and Deleting Browsing History
Hi
I don't know much about designing websites, but I use them a great deal
I've been looking at your site several times during this thread and I have yet to see a problem as a user [IE8/XP]
At the moment it seems to work very well
browsers are not the only things that have cache - do you use a proxy server [or does your ISP ?]
-
Re: Please please help re Xara Web Designer 6 and Deleting Browsing History
Microsoft actually states for refreshing, use ctrl-F5 to force the refresh from the website. I normally hold down the shift key and click the refresh icon to refresh it.
The web designers I know all use this trick and I often tell my hosting customers, that's what they need to do when they make changes and can't see the results, they often think they uploaded to the wrong directory.
It's a very poor practice to put the non-cache metatag in the header. Browsers cache for a reason, as stated earlier in the thread, to speed up loading. It doesn't matter what software you use to create the site, it's going to be the same.
-
Re: Please please help re Xara Web Designer 6 and Deleting Browsing History
ckh... Can I just say that I use DP6 for just about everything out of choice but also have the latest versions of WebPlus and WYSIWYG WebBuilder and neither display this little quirk that occurs with WB6/DP6. It'd be interesting to know what John (covoxer) has to say about no cache tags, etc.
-
Re: Please please help re Xara Web Designer 6 and Deleting Browsing History
w00dy, other programs don't generate the images used for the website as Xara does, so cache problems aren't so obvious because the images don't change their name as the website is updated - this means that even if the cache isn't fully updated, most content remains unchanged anyway and new content is fetched. With Xara image names are recycled, so if the cache is partially out of date, the page can look scrambled.
Xara gives users the ability to mitigate this effect by naming images, which means that caches are more likely to have the correct content in place.
Ultimately, just as with all other software, you learn to use the software and adapt your working practices to suit the technology to your needs. This caching issue exists for all software but is exacerbated by the way Xara hand-holds the user saving them from having to do all the donkey-work required by other software. In practice, professional web developers don't refresh their website several times a day, exacerbating cache issues, or if they do, they take steps (already described in this thread) to minimise issues. It's very poor practice to be testing web page updates by publishing to a live site, until the site is ready for public consumption.
Regarding forcing the cache to be flushed - this is something that web developers should not normally do - it slows page loads and makes websites load more slowly than they should. As a workaround for Xara it could be useful, but if I did use this method, I would republish a couple of days later (without other changes) with that cache setting code removed.
Xara software does great things to make web publishing easy. In some cases where people use it with poor working practices, some of the more technical issues of web publishing manifest themselves in unwanted ways. This requires that web developers up their game - either by adapting their working practices using Xara, or incorporating more technical means to circumvent unexpected (to the inexperienced) behaviour of web technology.
All the angst about caches can be solved by incorporating web workarounds (already described in this thread and elsewhere) while using Xara, or adopting a more professional publishing regime whilst using Xara. Alternatively, by aquiring some web technology skills, users who cannot live with the reality of internet caches and Xara page development, could use a text editor to write their HTML pages directly, or try and cut corners to HTML enlightenment using other software, which will clip their wings in other ways.
99% of Xara users don't have a problem with Xara web generation, others that do either up their game by taking on-board the realities of the web and Xara page generation, or continue to blame their tools while everyone else gets on with the job.

Re: Please please help re Xara Web Designer 6 and Deleting Browsing History
I haven't read all of this thread but you could, if you wanted to, put this little javascript snippet somewhere on the page (in a placeholder obviously):
Code:
<a href="javascript:location.reload(true)">Not displaying properly? Refresh this page</a>
You could either leave it there permanently or just until you resolve the problem. I do think, however, that this is most likely an ISP or proxy cache problem.
You could also set your own browser to not cache any pages:

"Im not your enemy"
"Pauland ... rambling, too long .. won't even bother to read everything you write"
You know what Pauland ... i DO know this is not the place to get personal, but that first sentence i just wrote, didn't it sound like you? Thru our correspondence, i just picked up this bad vibe, it's like you are putting people down, and you must stop that Pauland. Look in the mirror, and try be nice ... i have been very nice to you ... yet it's as if you put people down, and i read it agian in your loooooooong writing ..... (which generalyy is good ... except if you didn't put people down. Anyway, the fact remains, Xara is not displaying things properly .... and with, or without you, WE, those of us who are having this problem, WILL get it sorted. So hush Pauland. The reason why, as you state, that is IF it is not a generalised statement, that u THINK 99% of people are not having this problem ... is because people are either not doing regular updates on their site, they use it for a one time design, and may make changes once a month, twice a year, or never at all .... and maynot be aware of what is happening. As to the people who HAVE to do regular changes, because stock gets added daily/weekly, price changing etc ... I am sure THEY are the ones who are in this situation. But i will hush, because you are justifying (or trying to), a serious shortfall in Xara .... XARA IS A FANTASTIC PRODUCT WHEN IT COMES TO USER FRIENDLINESS, ONE BUYS IT FOR THE REASONS YOU STATE, EASE OF USE, etc etc etc .... yet if it publishes the first time perfectly, and then after changes, a week later, users are FORCED TO press F5 or Delete their Browsing History ....then that in itself is a problem. My hope, is that if you should come back with help or comments in this forum ... that you would at least try to UNDERSTAND OUR problem, the first step beinb to see that there is a problem .... and if not see it as a problem, see it as a shortfall ... and be a part of the solution, without putting US down as if WE are the problem. Because we are not Pauland. Even if you THINK we are. We are just people (like you), who want something to work, and not give these problems. It would be wonderful, if when i pressed publish, after making changes, tomorrow, next week, next month, if the website went thru, and a user on the other side of the world, a user of 8years old, a user of 80 years old, didnt have to press F5, or delete history, to see the poerfect design that i see on my screen within the program. Wouldn't that be wonderful Pauland. Well, so far, it aint happenin like that with Xara Web Designer 6 .... Pauland, think about EVERY OTHER WEBSITE IN THE WORLD ... perhaps a billion of them. Perhaps a Trillion? I have yet, in all the years that i have been on the web ... I have yet, as a user, to press F5. And i have NEVER EVER NEVER EVER seen a website on the net, that comes up scrambled. And no, it's not becasue it's a trial version, placed on the net, please Pauland, stop putting people down. I'm glad though, that through all this, that you do admit, that ... there are cache issues with Xara Web designer 6. Because there most certainly are. That should make you think a little, as to yr replies re Xara Web Designer 6. Take care

Re: Please please help re Xara Web Designer 6 and Deleting Browsing History
I wonder how you that have (cache?) problems upload your pages?
Do you use Xara to publish, or a separate ftp program like FileZilla?
I have not had any problems with neither Xara nor FileZilla, but with FileZilla it may be easier to mess things up?
Or maybe it is what beretgascon thinks - a problem with the ISP(or rather web server?) or proxy cache?
OTOH it wouldn't hurt if Xara kept the names of those images that already have a (file)name?
Or by default added a "filename=xx" name to them?
