Challenge: Charles Noir, Ace Detective
When I saw Charles's last name rendered as "Noir", it brought up an image of a 1940's-style movie poster with Charles in a fedora and trenchcoat. Haven't been able to get it out of my head. :)
Then I figured it might be good for a group challenge since I'm sure there are many people around here who can render it much better than I can (as you can see from the attached -- at least I got a recognizable hat:D).
Anybody up for a poster fest on behalf of Charles's alter ego?

Re: Challenge: Charles Noir, Ace Detective
Egg,
I like the style of the woman particularly,
it reminds me of Salvador Dalí for some reason,
and the nod to Xara.
but could you explain the wheelbarrow, nice as it is,
or am I missing something?! (perhaps it's a Buñuel movie).
Please don't make me explain the Buñuel reference;
it's about telephones made from lobsters.
No, I've not been ingesting any strange substances.
Saludos,
Bob.

not a reference to little Bo Peep then? ;)

I'm afraid that you lost me there, Steve.
I went through the whole nursery rhyme..
unless it's a play on "noir" and black sheep.
Saludos,
Bob.

Re: Challenge: Charles Noir, Ace Detective
an oblique reference to a Dali film script involving a wheelbarrow and a shepherdess which I don't think was ever actually made :)

Re: Challenge: Charles Noir, Ace Detective
Hi Egg,
great work!
In my eyes it shows a beautiful lady, called Xara, who Charles saw one evening in the TV. Currently she wears a nice Windows dress, but it looks, that she is also on the way to her new Linux version, which is currently under construction.

Here's to you "Egg",
Did you confuse yourself or did you watch 2 Bogey movies at the same time

Re: Challenge: Charles Noir, Ace Detective
Cheers folks. Bob, I've no idea about the wheelbarrow. In an effort to educate myself I did a search on "Noir" in Wikipedia and came across this
I thought wheelbarrows must be an integral part of Film Noir so I drew one as well :D

Re: Challenge: Charles Noir, Ace Detective
Although not based on, Charles - I did do this drawing this year for my cousin and it happens to fit your challenge description. So I'd thought I'd repost it - with a few minor tweaks. (hat has been resized a tad smaller and a band of light now across the eyes)

Re: Challenge: Charles Noir, Ace Detective
Great stuff Bob, in particular the light falling across the eyes. Could I suggest it would work better if everything apart from the lighter areas was made darker? And where's the wheelbarrow?

Re: Challenge: Charles Noir, Ace Detective
I wonder if Mister Noir Himself has noticed this thread yet ;)

Re: Challenge: Charles Noir, Ace Detective
Looks great Marcia!
One note though... I think yourself and Sledger are pleasant and intelligent TG friends... Hey, I would even have both of you over for a brew or two, and some prime rib on the spit (if my wife was chaparoning), but I'm not sure I'm comfortable in the way you guys are invading my personal space.. ;)
Hey, wait a minute... Where was I? Yeah, I'm supposed to be working...
Looks good. :)

Re: Challenge: Charles Noir, Ace Detective
I wonder if Charles does look anything like Johnny Depp in his
Scissorhands role? :D
Great idea, Marcia!

Re: Challenge: Charles Noir, Ace Detective
Excellent drawings, all. Bob, I have always envisioned Charles Noir a little older than what I see in your pic. Perhaps you could age him a bit?

Re: Challenge: Charles Noir, Ace Detective
Charles Moir isn't an old man :)

Bill,
That was Charles in 1940 at Biggin Hill as a newbie pilot. He's aged since then, but won't admit it. ;)

Re: Challenge: Charles Noir, Ace Detective
hahahahaha
Oops.
This whole thread I have been thinking of Guy Noir, the detective, from Prairie Home Companion.
So sorry, Charles.
Stay young.

Cheers Egg, I stand corrected ;)
Here is my contribution to the challenge.

Re: Challenge: Charles Noir, Ace Detective
Fantastic, Bill !! The Xara building looks really creepy in the background, somekind of dungeon where Darkfather rules :D
-
Re: Challenge: Charles Noir, Ace Detective
Thanks Marcia.
The background was made using XPE to change the contrast and blur the image. I added a contoned clone of the image and Stained Glass transparency to darken the background.
It does make for a dark and creepy image. :)

Re: Challenge: Charles Noir, Ace Detective
Hi Bill,
Really looks great and sinister,
Maybe you can add some shimmering lights behind the windows or some flying bats and tombstones

Re: Challenge: Charles Noir, Ace Detective
Wow I missed this thread completely...
I think I may have missed some of the jokes/quips and leg pulling too..
Just looking at that photo of Charles I checked the image out and saw the Exif data:
File change date and time: 2005:10:09 16:41:31
Image description: KONICA MINOLTA DIGITAL CAMERA
Image input equipment manufacturer: Konica Minolta Camera, Inc.
Image input equipment model: DiMAGE A2
Software used: Xara Picture Editor @PICT2346(edited2).JPG.xpe
OK the date was October 2005.. But my attention was drawn to the use of XPE for the resizing which retained the EXIF data??
News to me :)

Re: Challenge: Charles Noir, Ace Detective
Marcia, your Charles became more Manson than Noir :)
