I have no idea. She's certainly up to no good.
Yeah, that's what I thought when I saw the bloody knife in her hand and part of an infant face down in a basin on the right.
Not sure if that is another hapless baby in her lap.
The painting appears here - http://soria-goig.com/historia/pedro...plandor_14.htm - which I think is about witches but I can't see details ... think it's just illustrating
That basin is a cooking pot
I did try google, but ended up on a site describing medieval torture.. ..nasty (to put it mildly).
That link leads to a page that Chrome translates and I think it's to do with the Inquisition
Thank you all for the help so far, I still can't find anything except that a band named deadbodieseverywhere has used it as their cover art. From my limited knowledge of art I would have to guess that it the virgin Mary based on the colours she's wearing and the baby who would be Jesus.

Definitely not - she's a witch cutting up babies and cooking them.
Ripp3r I was wondering if this is the complete painting because I see a knee on the left side that isn't on the one in the link zaphodeist posted. I find that very odd.
Here are the two side by side.

At first look I thought Hogarth ... you know, one of those "look this is where drink gets you" prints. It seems to be a detail from a larger piece.
Cover art on this book : Criminal Belgium: Law, Justice and Society (XIVth - XVIth century)
La Belgique criminelle : Droit, justice et société ( XIVème - XVIème siècle )
http://www.amazon.fr/Belgique-crimin.../dp/2872097813
This was by a Belgian artist called Antoine Wiertz - "Hunger, Madness, Crime" - 1864 (using the book Steve found as a search reference). Good job on finding it guys, I think it's a pretty obscure painting ...
... pretty grim aswell.

Su
Nice one Su! :)
Ar I just solved this and then spotted "Page 1 of 2" as I was checking over my post! Well, for future reference the key to getting started with the book and the ISBN is TinEye.
Yep, been using TinEye for several years for this exact purpose ;)
have no idea about it,someone may help you.
sorry but I didn't know who painted that.

Then why post when someone has already successfully answered the question?Quote:
