x9 - no new drawing tools
no new drawing tools or enhancements as far as i can see
just 64 bit support
i don't think i've been as disappointed before as this
-
Re: x9 - no new drawing tools
Must admit its left me feeling a little deflated. Web Designer features we new about and expected, similarly Page Designer features all present and correct.
Its a bit like an album with three songs on it. One a slightly remixed version from the previous album plus two singles which you had already played enough for them not to be that exciting anymore. The Beatles never put singles onto their albums.
I'll still buy it for the 64bit remix but I had been hoping for a little more excitement and features to play with; a couple of new songs at least.
Derek

Re: x9 - no new drawing tools
i bought it anyway
like you for the 64 bits but not the drawing bits
-
Re: x9 - no new drawing tools
I have merged two separate threads into this one.
Kate's announcement with links is post #4 http://www.talkgraphics.com/showthre...ro-X9-Released
-
Re: x9 - no new drawing tools
It seems the 4 products on the product scale was more important than a really unique Designer Pro version. That became the summary of all products rather than providing something additional. Probably some marketing thing again
-
Re: x9 - no new drawing tools
Well, well, well. A rather anti-climatic announcement. "Newness" that ain't new, "features" that rate a yawn, not a Yeah!
Someone should catch a clue at Xara. First a sub-set of features released as a new application (at least it had a proper announcement) and now an update to a good vector application that doesn't build upon, enhance, nor introduce new vector drawing capabilities.
What exactly is Xara Designer Pro?

Re: x9 - no new drawing tools
I bought Designer 9 when it came out, I am very happy with the new tools. The healing brush is a-m-a-z-i-n-g and works a treat.
Why the complaints?
Does it diminish one's status having to be on a par with the less expensive Designer 9?
Very silly (shaking my head in disbelief)..

no, it's a feeling of having been forgotten

It isn't silly being disappointed in nothing new, improved or enhanced as regards vector drawing capabilities. If there had been one, count it one, improvement (for instance the pen tool) it would have mitigated the issues. If there had been one new capability (say vector brushes), there would have been hand-clapping instead. If there had been one enhancement (say all the properties of an object being in one place where those properties can be changed) it would have been good.
Add to those "for instance" examples above just some of the dozens upon dozens of other improvements, enhancements or new capabilities that have been in threads for a dozen or more years, and there would have been exclamations of praise.
Get it now?
Mike
RE the healing brush. This has been a core function of bitmap editors for decades. For me, in a vector editing/creation application, it rates "who cares."

if anybody says stop whining
i'm entitled to
i paid for it

Re: x9 - no new drawing tools
The simple truth is, most of what I do, could be done very well with Xara way back when it was CorelXara. But as someone who works in this program, all of the time in a professional capacity, I appreciate and will soon grow totally dependent on many of the new features and improvements. This is what is important to me. If there were a drawing tool that would let me draw like someone who knew how to draw, that would be terrific. But there isn't.
Download the trial version(s), work with it for a week or so, then see if you can live without them. If you can great. If not, buy the product or upgrade.
-
Re: x9 - no new drawing tools
Thus far, I'm liking the overall feel and responsiveness of the 64 bit version. (running 12gig/ram). I guess it's what your looking for and where your concentrated areas of use are found. I like the web publishing and see improved output compared to posting a web friendly pdf. I'm still playing around with the masking stuff. I've gotten proficient enough with the drawing tools that it's almost easier to make your mask using them than fooling around with erasing. We'll see how it goes as I get a little deeper.

Re: x9 - no new drawing tools
Gentlemen - I might say that someone who uses Xara 5 - this of course is a substantial upgrade for around $140. I realize I'm a new user but here's what I think. Adobe just went with the CC "Creative Cloud" - love it or hate it - many are going to pay per month just to own the software. It's a tough nut to swallow if your a sound professional like myself. But the Adobe CC is across the board - and many graphics people don't like it one bit. It's an opportune time to re-package and re brand a bit; and catch some of the Photoshop Illustrator and Indesign defectors; I'm looking forward to the Xara Page publication software. So I can understand that now is a good time to give a shout out to the Graphics community; and the way to do that - provide an update - even if it is without some of the bells and whistles many were expecting. By the way - thanks Xara - for letting me know on Twitter. I follow you.

As I mentioned in another thread, I'll still upgrade. Xara deserves rewarded for their efforts by me. I too would like a little love by Xara in areas mentioned here and in the oh so many Dear Xara request threads.

The new FX plugins and text flows look nice! :)

Re: x9 - no new drawing tools
I personally like when a software company keeps trying to improve their product. It shows forward progress, hopefully. What really irritates me however is the VERY LAME grace period of approx 30-60 DAYS...6 Months would be a much more customer friendly position. I just upgraded both Designer Pro and WD Premium in April and now get the intro offer of only $99. Really? That's horrible for continued customer loyalty. I finally bit the bullet upgrading, and with no indication that there was another release around the corner...
That's just very poor ways of doing business. I like the products and want to be excited to use them but the upgrade game is starting to get old....Take a hint from the folks over at Pixelogic, creators of ZBrush. They have had free upgrades for life and have a very healthy and thriving customer base and always pushing the boundaries with meaningful/powerful upgrades.
I posted a similar concern on the FB page, wonder if that will get deleted?

Re: x9 - no new drawing tools
I will also buy and why (beside of the fact that I love the program and would support the programmers efforts anyway):
- CSS3/HTML5 support so code instead of bitmaps for some page elements
- Background erase
- 64 bit support
- Support for DOCX files
- Photo heal tool
- Retina display
- new widgets
- not especially for use, but like to learn from new templates
I evaluate this year maybe it was a direction to clear the product scale for the company, and simply there was no too much resource for innovative steps. Which is anyway not true fully as that list is quite long for new functions, maybe not so spectacular because each area got something.
That is new and not sure in positive direction, that finally the Designer Pro became "just" a summary

Re: x9 - no new drawing tools
Hi,
Just purchased the new Designer ProX9 and downloaded 64Bit version and the 32Bit version (for the plugins), now I am wondering when the program ships will it
contain both the 64B and 32Bit versions?
Jim
-
Re: x9 - no new drawing tools
Yes Jim, both the 32 and 64 bit versions will be on the CD just like with Web Designer Premium.
-
Re: x9 - no new drawing tools
Will someone address the upgrade grace period window explanation?

Re: x9 - no new drawing tools
I've been checking daily since the 1st of July for the upgrade to DPX9 and was surprised to find out about it in the Forum not on the Xara website. As I am upgrading from Version 7 I expect to find lots of goodies to keep me occupied for the foreseeable future. I was surprised at some of the negative comments though I expect I might well have a few moans when I catch up over the last 2 releases.
One point that was raised that I do agree with is the upgrade notice and the cost - I think 90 days would be a pretty fair notice and around £69 for the first 30 days after launch would be a good incentive to upgrade (and a nice "thank you") for the loyal users who been with Xara since its "Corel" days.
I suppose the fact that Xara now belongs to a large multinational company rather than the original founders means they will want to milk the cash cow on a yearly basis as they don't have the link to the customer base that the original team had, its just a thought.
Here's another thought how about a live video "chat" with the Boss and maybe the lead developer discussing future developments and why not have a "Wish List" competition with the top 3 getting included in the next release - a bit radical but what do you guy's think!
-
Re: x9 - no new drawing tools
Why not give me the option of having the '3D' tool available on its own.
That's how I liked it.
Arrgghhhh to that enhancement.
Where's the 'Live effect Tool' gone???
Please can someone point me in the right direction.
Has it been amalgamated with something else?
EDIT: Oh! It's OK. It's called 'Fx' now.
But, not available on its own. Got to put up with the flyout.
Arrgghhhh to that enhancement.
-
Re: x9 - no new drawing tools
It's now called FX, and lives with the camera + other tools.
I have added the button to the custom toolbar :-)
Grenou
-
Re: x9 - no new drawing tools
@ Rik -- Live Effects is now 'FX' on the Photo Tools flyout menu...
@ Gary P -- bees knees! Ha! You are such a good writer -- these reviews of the new products are just excellent.
As for me, now that I'm retired and no longer doing web stuff or print publishing, P&GD is absolutely perfect and a tremendous value for the money.
As far as I can tell, DPX 9 doesn't add anything new for me on the photo tools or design tools side. But what a great 'Swiss Army knife' program for Xara-Users making websites and doing printed work!
But -- just checked the intro upgrade price from XDP -- US $99 -- now THAT is quite a deal. Am tempted! May try it out.

Not as customer friendly as free. It would be superb if they did 6 months trials. I could do six months using Xara, six months using something else, then back to Xara.
30 days is more than generous.

No indication apart from plenty of posts on these forums about the likely release dates.

You don't have to upgrade. You made a decision that the software was worth $99 to you in April. It's as valuable to you now as it was then.
If the new version isn't worth the cash don't buy it.

Better buy it then.
See how they manage to stay in business a few years down the line.

I dunno. If Xara don't delete it, you might get some useful feedback from people who think you've nothing to complain about.

Thanks Big Frank.
Why didn't I think of that?!
Actually, I think I've tried that before and it didn't work. And that's why I probably didn't try that this time.
Maybe I'm mistaken.
In which case: Xara, I take it all back.

Or Window > Control Bars > Button Palette. You can (hold down the Alt key) and drag and drop the tools anywhere you want and you can create your own custom button bar, something I have done for each version of the product.

@Jon Not so. The Regions and Mask Tool is brand new. And there are 11 new photo filters that work with both 32 & 64 bit versions. http://xaraxone.magix.net/XDPX9FL/photo-graphics.htm
And the Photo Heal Tool which Frank is a lot more sophisticated than the Magic Erase Tool.
And Background Erase, although a bit more labor intensive is so much better than the Select/Replace Tool.

I've been doing that for some time, Gary.
But, I hadn't realised that you can actually drag a tool from the 'flyout' itself.

Yes, you can. :)
