Transferring menus to new computer
I am on the verge of leaving Webstyle behind. I don't know why it is so damn difficult to move projects from one computer to another, but every time I do this, it's like having a root canal. Support docs are awful. I have three websites that have their own Webstyle menus. What the hell do I need to transfer for them to continue seeing these files.
Sorry to rant...but this is the stupidest feature of the product. NO reason it should be this hard.

Re: Transferring menus to new computer
The Files and Transfer Settings for Windows XP didn't work? (assuming you have WinXP.)
It's supposed to transfer folders and thinks like email in tact from one computer to another. What I usually did, is loaded up my new hard disk in the old computer and transferred the files that I wanted.
There are also commercial programs that do this. They vary in price from 20-60 dollars US.

Re: Transferring menus to new computer
All I'm talking about is moving the Xara Webstyle projects over. For my menus, buttons, etc. I saw a link about transferring the "WSTemplates" folder over. I did that and I can see my projects now...except they're all greyed out...so I can't use them.

Re: Transferring menus to new computer
Hmm, dunno then. I thought the File Transfer Wizard would work for you. I'm pretty sure you can pick specific files, but if that's not work I'm not sure what to tell you.

Re: Transferring menus to new computer
Ok...you're not understanding my question. I'm not asking HOW to transfer. I'm needing to know EXACTLY which files to transer, EXACTLY where to put them and how to get them working in Frontpage 2002 again.
I've gotten what I think I need to transfer over, but when i go to edit my projects, I CAN see them but all the options to change text, size, etc are greyed out.

Re: Transferring menus to new computer
I see. :)
Well, I think these are the files you will need. I will use an example from my computer as I have FP2002 and use Webstyle.
I think is what you wanted to know, if not let me know. That's how I did it with some older files made in Webstyle stored in another folder. This is all located in my Frontpage folder for this Web and Webpage. In this case, these files will be transfered to a new folder, in a new Web located in Frontpage on your new computer. My network is down for some reason, so I can't test this transfer, but it should work.
The example below shows the menu graphic itself, showing 5 buttons, represented by:
indextest_b1.gif through indextest_b5.gif along with indextest_left.gif and indextest_right.gif. The indextest.js is the javascript file which makes it all work. The rest are just graphic (GIF) files.

Re: Transferring menus to new computer
I just tested the above post and it works.
The key here is to know how and what your files were named when you saved those menus/buttons/styles to your Web folder.
Once you have made a new Web folder on your new computer, you will essentially transfer the Webpage or Webpages that originally had all those menus enacted on them using the Frontpage "Insert Xara Webstyle 4" navbar, button or etc.
If you need to rework that page, rename it etc., you can do it in the new Web on the new computer. However, the transfer of the key gif files and the javascript (js) is important.
js and gif file extentions are the ones you will be looking for as far as Webstyle is concerned.
There will be in the case of the Navbar menu.
One main gif file that is the whole bar. There will be button names for each part of the navbar menu, called b1, b2, b3 etc. There will also be right and left 'button' (b1_right.gif, b1_left.gif) GIF's that are associated with the navabar.
In the exampled I showed there were 14 files, 13 GIF and 1 JS for the one navbar to be transferred.
As I said I just tested it and it worked, hopefully it will work for you. :)

Re: Transferring menus to new computer
This still isn't working. It's so frustrating, I just want to cry. :)
Okay...on my old site I had a website with a submenu in it called "menu". In here, I had all my Xara Webstyle 4 menu files named "Bio.gif, "Bio_b1.gif", etc. And in there also is the Bio.js file. On the old PC, the web and all related files were on drive E. On the new computer, they are drive D. I've copied over the entire web plus the WSTemplates folder. Yet still the project is greyed out whenever I try to edit or even reinsert. This is driving me insane!

Re: Transferring menus to new computer
Well, sounds like the path name is still looking on the older computer.
I think I know how to fix it, but it involves fiddling with the registry and it may screw things up if it doesn't work out.
So, don't try it unless you feel comfortable with working with regedit.
Before starting, write down the original path name so you can change it back if it screws up.
*Open REGEDIT.EXE from the Start - Run command.
*Expand the HKEY_CURRENT_USER key.
*Expand the Software key.
*Select the Xara/Webstyle 4 registry key.
*Select Options
*In the Window on the right side, select ExportPathName and right click choose Modify.
*Type in the name of your new path, I think you said it was in Drive D now.
*(If the other parts of the path name are the same, the Drive letter indicator may be the only thing you need to change. If it isn't, change it folder path name until it matches the destination file on your new computer.
*(EXAMPLE: Old name)
E:\Documents and Settings\MyName\My Documents\My Webs\MyWebProject\indextest.htm
*(EXAMPLE: New Name)
D:\Documents and Settings\MyName\My Documents\My Webs\MyWebProject\indextest.htm
* Choose Export Registry File from the Registry menu.
* Save the file to whatever filename you want and copy it to the new computer.
* Open REGEDIT.EXE on the new computer.
* Expand the HKEY_CURRENT_USER key again and then the Software key.
* Make sure Software is selected and then choose Import Registry File from the Registry menu.
* Select the file you copied to import.
*Double check and see that the new path is under Webstyle/Options in the registry.
NOTE: There may be other paths that need to be modified under the registry in the same areas, they are titled USERPath0, USERPath1, etc. Do one at a time and remember to write down what the old Path names are in case you have to change them back.
Again, don't do this unless you are not comfortable working with Regedit and the registry!!!

Re: Transferring menus to new computer
Don't know if this will work, but can you look in the XWS files and change the paths to your new paths?
Thought this might work since the file contains the paths in a text editable format. Try that and see if it works.
Change a copy first though. You want to make sure you have a backup.

Re: Transferring menus to new computer
You will see something similar to this Regedit screen in this graphic.
The highlighted yellowed areas will be the areas of concern.
The right screen and the first highlighted box on the top labeled ExportPathName is the line the instructions refer to.
Again, do at your own risk. :)

Re: Transferring menus to new computer
Just tested and it appears to work for me.
I looked for a section called XWSFile: with a path after. That's the path I changed.
-
Re: Transferring menus to new computer
I'm going to try the registry thing in a bit...but I'm not sure I understand what you're saying about the xws file.
I did find this in my HTML code for where I have the menu:
<!--webbot CLIENTSIDE
bot="Ws4FpEx" MODULEID="'Default (Project)\Bio_off.xws'" PREVIEW="<img src='Menu/Bio.gif?06C202CE' editor='Webstyle4' border='0'>" startspan --><script src="xaramenu.js"></script><script Webstyle4 src="Menu/bio.js"></script><noscript><img src="Menu/Bio.gif?06C202CE" editor="Webstyle4"></noscript>
<!--webbot
bot="Ws4FpEx" endspan i-checksum="62078" -->
Looks kinda funky...so where would I change the path. Also I noticed the the Project is "Default (Project)". I must be missing something fundamental about Xara Webstyle. I haven't been creating "Projects" that I'm aware of. I just create my menus, save the files, and go.
I'll let you know what happens in registry.
-
Re: Transferring menus to new computer
Under Program Files - Xara - Webstyle4 - WSTemplates - you'll find all your projects. Look for the one with the name you gave it on your old computer. In it you will see files with an XWS extension. Those are the files I was referring to. There is a folder under there called Default (Project). Check there. jamesmc is right about how sensitive the registry is. Be very careful if you're messing with it.

Re: Transferring menus to new computer
Wow, I don't know what the hell is going on. I don't have an ExportPath in my registry where you have yours.
-
Re: Transferring menus to new computer
Yes...apparently, i've really created a real mess for myself...I have 3 websites and all of the shit i've been doing is in the Default (Project) folder. I don't even remember where I specified a project when doing this stuff?? I just picked my menu, told it where to save, etc.
So...bottom line I know where all the stuff with the Bio menu and all is (D:\MyDocuments\My Webs\edchinn\Menu\bio.js). So where exactly will I put this path?
And what is the best way to separate all my projects out of Default(Project)?
I appreciate all the help. Am I the only one stumped at how monumentally difficult Xara makes this?

Re: Transferring menus to new computer
heh heh, Well I don't know what to say about that. :)
Are you sure you are looking at your OLD computer registry?
You might try Red's and see if it works for you. At least look and see if there are any paths.
It might be that somehow you obliterated your paths somewhere along the line, not sure how though...
(scratches head and thinks some more)

Re: Transferring menus to new computer
I'm quite comfortable with the registry.
But what I don't get is why I don't have the ExportPath key on my new PC. So I need to create these keys? Not sure I understand what looking upt he old path will do for me since it isn't valid anymore.

Re: Transferring menus to new computer
Okay something is seriously screwed up. Even if I go to create a new menu with Xara, ALL my options are greyed out except Start and Designs. I can't even create anything! LOL This is a brand new hard drive with a clean build. Just loaded Xara on it 2 days ago.
-
Re: Transferring menus to new computer
Using the old registry entry and modifying it for your new computer will make Webstyle work as if it has always been there, hopefully.
Without a path to follow, the items wont' show up and I think you said they are greyed out. They are greyed out because there is no path to follow on your new computer.

That's probably because you haven't created anything new with Webstyle on your new computer.
I recall that's how it looks when no projects have been started.
-
Re: Transferring menus to new computer
Okay but are you saying that I have to actually create those reg entries that don't even exist on new PC? Like Export Path? Maybe I'm just really slow today, but I still don't understand why I need to look up the old path. I know exactly where the files are on this computer.

Okay but I CAN'T create anything new. Everything is greyed out except Start and Designs. I have NEVER had to create a Project as my first step. I just went to insert a menu, button, whatever.

Re: Transferring menus to new computer
According to Xara's help files...
"The ability to easily create professional-looking designs is now at your finger tips. The process takes just 4 easy steps:
1) Select a design type
When starting Webstyle you are presented with a circular menu of different web graphic options. Just click on the type of design that you wish to create"
So I should be able to just go select like a menu or button to start. I can't even do that. I can choose a menu for instance...but no matter which design I choose, everything remains greyed out. Should I just reinstall?
-
Re: Transferring menus to new computer
You might reinstall, but if it were me I would sleep on it and look at with fresh eyes tomorrow. :)
There is only so much keyboard pounding that a forehead can take. heh heh.
I'll be back tomorrow, must shower and read the newspaper. :)

Re: Transferring menus to new computer
Well...I didn't feel like waiting so I fixed it. :) Long story but the bottom line...I had read somewhere to copy over the WSTemplates folder from the old PC. THIS was the problem. Something I was copying in was trashing default settings. So after reinstalling the 2nd time, I ONLY copied the Default (Project) folder in. And VOILA! Was able to use it no problems.
I hadn't paid attention to the whole Project thing unfortunately. So now...I have 3 different websites with files in Default Project. Can I just create Project folders for them and copy the needed files from Default over? Then...I guess figure out how to edit it in the specific site?
Anyway...thanks a million for both of your help.

Re: Transferring menus to new computer
That's great Paul8AGrape!
I had to head off to bed, but I'm glad it worked out for you.
I think you should be able to create project folders and sort your projects into them. I think you'll have to change the paths in the XWS files I mentioned though. I had a project just the other day that I moved into another folder. I had to make the change otherwise it errored when I tried to open it in Webstyle.

Okay so I'm having a similar problem still. I am able to get all my Xara projects working but I had a "Default (Project)" folder that everything had been getting dumped into, and now I'm seperating it. I've tried creating a new project folder, copying the files I need into it, then renaming it in the HTML code. So instead of "<!--webbot CLIENTSIDE bot="Ws4FpEx" MODULEID="'Default (Project)\Bio_off.xws'", I rename it to the new project <!--webbot CLIENTSIDE bot="Ws4FpEx" MODULEID="'NewWeb (Project)\Bio_off.xws'
Where else are you talking about making changes? If I do the above, it is still pointing towards "Default (Project)..." when I go to save again.

Re: Transferring menus to new computer
Hi Paul.
The files I'm referring to are the xws files located under a path like: C:\Program Files\Xara\Webstyle 4\WSTemplates. Look for these.
That's a bummer that you put everything into one default project folder. Once you clean up the code it should work.
Look for a section called XWSFile: with a path after. That's the path I changed.
Let us know how it goes.

Re: Transferring menus to new computer
I don't see it...here is a sample of the code from my site...
<!--webbot CLIENTSIDE
bot="Ws4FpEx" MODULEID="'Chinnema (Project)\Chinnema_off.xws'" PREVIEW="<img src='Menu/Chinnema.gif?05BF816C' editor='Webstyle4' border='0'>" startspan --><script src="xaramenu.js"></script><script Webstyle4 src="Menu/chinnema.js"></script><noscript><img src="Menu/Chinnema.gif?05BF816C" editor="Webstyle4"></noscript><!--webbot
bot="Ws4FpEx" endspan i-checksum="592" --><p> </p>
But if I got to Save, it has the project as Default, but its greyed out, so I can't change it. I'm still confused about what you're saying to do with the actual .xws files.
