Drop Cap Challenge October 2013
I would like to continue the Drop Cap challenge by starting with the letter A and assigning a different letter each month until we have done the entire alphabet. By the time we are finished we should have a nice collection of colorful, decorative Drop Caps to use.
So starting this month make a decorative Drop Cap using the letter A. Any font, any style. Design your own letter if you want too.

What a nice idea Larry :)
And I get to be first! I've included my .xar file too. The background is fairly simple the letter was a hand sketch pencil on paper which I scanned and used the shape tool to lay down the line work in XDP9 colour added with the shape painter tool.

Re: Drop Cap Challenge October 2013
Well done, Larry. That's a great start to the challenge, Frances.
Mine is a font Art Nouveau Initials A (strangely using the upper case D).
The font has been converted to shapes and ungrouped a few times,
Next the Arrange Menu > Break Shapes operation, which leaves an unwanted solid shape over the design which is then removed.
I then coloured the various parts of the design and placed a pale yellow square behind everything and gave it a Petals Brush outline.
Then another square with no fill behind that, with a thick green line with an Intestine stroke shape.
Bob.

Re: Drop Cap Challenge October 2013
Well done Frances, Bob, and ankhor. This is getting off to a fantastic start.
@Bob, Thank you for the description on how you did yours, I think many will benefit from that, including me. This is going iin my tips and tricks section.
@ everyone I am saving all these images as we go along. There should be a large collection of TG member created Drop Caps by the time we are done.
Thank you all.

Is that A tired or loose it's balance? ;))

Re: Drop Cap Challenge October 2013
It struck me that I wanted a theme for the alphabet so each letter is going to be the start of a chapter in a story that describes the chapter.
No idea what the story is going to be until it finishes.
I think my protagonist is going to be called Arthur.

Re: Drop Cap Challenge October 2013
Themes are good. However, there are times when one theme will not work in all cases. For instance I thought of the vine and leaf theme but I decided I might like more variety. Your idea of using them in a story is sound and I suppose you are going to design your drop caps accordingly. Maybe I misunderstand what you are saying though. At any rate I hope you have fun with these.

Re: Drop Cap Challenge October 2013
Good job, thank you Joce. You don't need to get in a hurry to post the alphabet because at one letter a month this challenge will last awhile.

Re: Drop Cap Challenge October 2013
Good job coldwetnoz it's interesting that you and I have chosen the same font to use, meaning the first one, although I altered mine somewhat. I have done about 4 so far and want to do one more before I post. 3 are new but 2 others I started carrying on the same theme as the ones I posted before. We'll see how it goes. I'm glad you are enjoying these, and it shows that you are. Keep it up. :D

Re: Drop Cap Challenge October 2013
I've been busy with these so now maybe I can do a couple from the Xone that I have been wanting to do. A couple of these I put on a colored paper background so we could see what they look like on something besides white. I hope you like them.

Hey guys why not join in the fun. I think there are lots of ways to do these that have not yet been explored so let't see what you can do.

Re: Drop Cap Challenge October 2013
There's a guy I work with who claims I do my Xara graphics in MSPAINT and he says he could do it in MSPAINT.
Metallic gold text warped out shape and give a shine or gradient filled with a shiny border on MSPAINT? I told him I'd like to see him try.
Now I've started music making with different software which is also published by Magix.

Re: Drop Cap Challenge October 2013
Let me guess...
A fractal fill and the 3D perspective option with a bit of shape moulding?

No on all counts. The A has a solid red fill, cloned, clone filled with a glass bitmap then brightness transparency applied, the gold part was done with Filter Forge, the part you think was 3d Perspective was a fattened clone of the above set to black and moved to back.

EDIT: I don't think MSPaint is capable of that either.

It was convincing and had me fooled.

I hate to say that he couldn't because I have seen amazing things done by people using the most primitive and basic tools.

Re: Drop Cap Challenge October 2013
SCALEBACK666 I was wondering how I made the black image and couldn't remember, but the best I cam figure is I made a copy of the entire A and all it's added shapes and added those together to give me one shape, changed color to black. cloned that and moved one of them to the side and down then blended the two together.

Re: Drop Cap Challenge October 2013
I feel a bit like a time traveller, as Larry has asked me if I would post a series of drop caps in the style of one I submitted in July 2015.
Here it is, and more to follow.
Bob.
