Could one of you kind folk help me out the host name and port number for Xara hosting please?
Many thanks!
You don't need Filezilla if your are uploading files to Control Centre > Xara On-line > Open Webspace > Xara Hosting.
In the bottom right of your webspace folder, you'll find a large red round plus button.
Press that, create a new folder, call it WOW, press again and up load files into the new folder.
It is a built-in FTP service.

Re: Xara hosting FTP details
Here's my connection setting for Filezilla.
The username is just the email address you used to purchase Xara, as is the password.
Re: Xara hosting FTP details
nobby, Egg's got his info from Factoid #1: https://www.xara-online.com/gb/website-faq.59.html
My approach is implicit in Factoid #2 but Xara don't actually explain it anywhere.

Re: Xara hosting FTP details
Good afternoon Egg and Acorn - many thanks for your swift responses.
I tend to use Xara as a test platform for sites, prior to going live on an alternate hosting platform so both of your responses are very helpful - thank you!
I did try using the FTP server address in the factoid - sftp.xara-online.com but I could not get it to work, but the one that Egg provided sftp.xara.hosting does work.
To try and save time I would like to be able to use the Xara preview function, but when using Wow slider it wont work as I assume Xara creates temporary files which needs access to the 'data' and 'engine' files. I assume I need to put the wow slider files in the same temp folder? If so, could some kind soul point me in its direction please?
Re: Xara hosting FTP details
@Egg, just been forced into using FileZilla hoping to save upload effort through the built-in XDA FTP service.
When publishing to Xara Hosting, however, the same throttling seems to be in place
Your configuration still works.
Export Website: 1m 15s for 51.4MB.
Upload htm files: 1m for 106 pages.
Upload folder contents: TBA for 2,616 files. Currently, 40m for 681/2616 files transferred.
What is interesting is the same site published into Cloud Xara took a similar opening time and just over five minutes to publish.
@Xara - spend a little on better server bandwidth please.
Thanks,
Acorn
Re: Xara hosting FTP details
Total time was 2h 54m versus 5m!
I get similar times (aeons) when using the XDA built-in function.

Re: Xara hosting FTP details
Their server is very slow. I believe it is Magix server rather than xara?
Re: Xara hosting FTP details
Yes, I think the servers are Magix'
Re: Xara hosting FTP details
It does not really matter who owns the shebang but I have been uploading through XDP+v20.3 for over 3 and a half hours and have achieved all of 46% for something that takes FileZilla 5-10 minutes to a real web service. Yes, it is over 2,500 files and 50MB at a transfer rate of Tortoise.
I am almost in tears.

Re: Xara hosting FTP details
For those who are interested, the overall upload timings were:
- sftp://.../index_htm_files/0.gif
- sftp://.../index_htm_files/xr_text.css
- sftp://.../index.xhl
I think 6 hours shows MagiXara has a real problem.
The supposed offer on renewal for one year use of Website M is next to worthless.
I would like my next renewal to be discounted instead.

Hi Acorn,
Thanks for sharing! I've already started to talk to MAGIX.

Eva, thank you.
The embarrassment (to me) is I had to request FTP access to a Staging folder on the client's domain so I could prove my work.
Yes, I am fortunate that I have the following approaches:
- WinZip Email for larger attachments. For old school who like tangible deliveries.
- Cloud share, e.g., Dropbox. Quick and dirty.
- XDA publishing to Magix Website M service (!). No SSL either or email or anything but genuinely expected it to work.
- Filezilla to the same. I had expected it to be faster but gave up trying.
- Xara Cloud > Web Share. Ideal apart from the lack of a useful subdomain name. No FTP route.
- FTP to a sub-domain that I own. Probably the safest.
- FTP to a client's domain. Useful at staging but i rarely attempt during development.
I note Matt is making encouraging noises around #5. I would probably subscribe into a useful service (CPanel / Linux / email support / domain handling for developer/designer teams & final client delivery).

Re: Xara hosting FTP details
Just a question, How about those images stored for the slide show plugin, are they also stored on slow servers, because my clients website images load slowly and it is effecting SEO

I would say yes as it is not available for Xara Pro+, therefore Magix, therefore slow.
Where possible, keep all in the same domain.

Re: Xara hosting FTP details
Keep all in the same domain? How do you mean? It is the plugin that loads the images therefore it stores them with magix, no? Or does it still store the images on my clients server (godaddy) and then it validates it with magix making it slow?

just don't use Magix servers for anything.
Find a utility that allows you to host on GoDaddy or anything other than Magix.

Re: Xara hosting FTP details
Acorn, I am trying to understand what your saying but I do not get it. I said she has hosting on godaddy, it is the pictures that are used by the slider plugin by xara that are loaded into magix servers. That is the issue. I do not host her site on xara, just the slider is slow.
Re: Xara hosting FTP details
maybe what acorn is saying is - don't use that plugin [or anything else rooted on magix server[s]], find and use another third party plugin that you can root [host] on your clients server
Re: Xara hosting FTP details
Yes, but it seems eveything within xara lately has downfalls. Youtube plugin, slider plugin, you name it... They all really need a look over or a make over however xara wants to look at it LOL, Xara enough with new useless features and more focus on what is not working well please. Still not sure if xara's agenda is run by magix or not.
Re: Xara hosting FTP details
the only thing magix have control over is the packaging of the installers for the non xara pro+/cloud programs, and the marketing and distribution of these, which presumably includes timing of release of the compiled updates - but xara still control the update agenda in terms of what content is included and always did, but I rather think pro+ will get priority now because it is a pure subscription model and they need to make it look attractive
Re: Xara hosting FTP details
THank you for the clarification. I have a love and hate relationship with Xara. Sorry if at times I come out bitter.
Re: Xara hosting FTP details
I love the program UI and the speed of throwing vector together
the company on the other hand is a commercial entity that has never made loadsamoney and still has to find it's feet in yet another incarnation; I wish it well, but love [or hate] does not come into it ;)
animation is a precise thing, but I only need to make one version of the vector asset to put in harmony and then I can do the rest in that program
xara enables me to wing it in the rough design stage - really what it started out as before all this web stuff, and I feel sorry for the way you get locked in with the OCC etc
I'm also long past the stage of doing line art and colouring in xara; harmony has made that just too easy these days with its real time pen stabilizer settings and its pen pressure profiling [xara - its on or it's off, that's so last millennium :p ]
