Flickering
Recently this just started happening: If I draw even the simplest of objects on the screen, like a circle, it will flicker. This did not happen before. My percentage of memory is still set at 25%. I uninstalled and reinstalled XPro and it is still happening. It occurs as I progress through drawing, occasional flickering. Any ideas?
I am using Windows XP, service pack 2, have a 3200+ amd processor, 1 gig of ram.
I just submitted a ticket to Xara Support, but TG is so full of knowledgable people that I thought I'd post this here too.
Let's see who first solves this, Support or TG.
Here's a sample of what's happening:
[hmmmmmm, it won't upload my .avi file.....]

Re: Flickering
Bob, how large is the avi file?
I know there is a size limit but don't recall what it is right now.
Can you zip the avi to a smaller size using WinZip or WinRar?
-
Re: Flickering
Hi,
Mine is doing this also...but I assumed it was from the latezt upgrades for windows XP, and also I installed a new graphic accelerator..the windows updates were about 6 weeks ago tho'...but I assumed it was related

Re: Flickering
2.45 MB. Is that too big? To zip it I should first put it in a folder, right?
-
Re: Flickering
Jim if you have automatic updates enabled the latest updates were released on March 11th. Microsoft releases updates the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of each month.
Bob if you do not have WinZip or WinRar you can zip a file using Windows XP. In Windows Explorer right click the avi file and select Send To then select Compressed (zipped) Folder.

Re: Flickering
Bill, I don't have that option with the right-click. I can put it in a folder and then zip it...
[I'm sure glad someone else is experiencing this too, not that I am happy about your flickering, Scotty.]

Re: Flickering
Soquilla,
I was just acknowledging that I have a similar problem with XaraXtreme pro and have for some time but started when I got automatic updates and installed a new graphic card in the same time period...I beleive it was XMLT something that was updated at the same time I put in new card..there were about 4-5 updates installed at one time and I haven't sorted out whether it was a combination of accelerator or the updates...I can live with my flickering.
I was just trying to make a gues at the problem.
since I put new card in X3D6 doesn't work at all.
Tried Un-installing and re-installing all Xara products I have but X3d6 don't wanna work.

Re: Flickering
2.45mb isn't too large. The Manage Attachments window doesn't specify any size limitations if they exist. Maybe Risto can check this?
-
Re: Flickering
Sorry Jim I thought you were saying the flickering started recently. Do all apps flicker or only Xara Xtreme?
Bob you can zip however you are comfortable doing it.

Re: Flickering
Okay, the .avi file is in this folder, hopefully, which is zipped, if the upload works, that is.
hmmm, that didn't work either
TG WILL allow me to upload graphics, though.
Here's as far as I ever get and then after a LONG wait I get a connection lost message, which is incorrect because I am always connected and still am or I wouldn't be posting right now.

Re: Flickering
Firewall?
Meantime, rename your file.avi to file_avi.jpg and try again. We can rename it back to an .avi once we download it.
-
Re: Flickering
Okay, trying that...
nope.
Firewall enabled or disabled, no difference.

Re: Flickering
Bob you can try emailing it to me.
Here is the file that Bob (-=Drifter=-) was trying to attach.
Anyone have ideas as to what may be causing the flicker shown in the video?
-
Re: Flickering
Bob what refresh rate are you running in your monitor settings?
For anyone that did not notice. I attached Bob's avi file to my previous post.
-
Re: Flickering
Thanks, Bill.
1. Why were you able to upload it and I wasn't?
2. I am using a refresh rate of 60. I changed it to 75 and the flickering seemed to increase, so went back to 60.
-
Re: Flickering
Bob I'm not sure why I could upload it an you could not. May simply have been a network traffic issue. You said the was a server disconnect error. That can occur when the server that TG in hosted on experiences a long time lag between packets. The upload is on a different data stream than you usual internet connection so you did not experience loss of browser connectivity.
I only used the question about refresh rate to bump the post up, it would effect all programs and not just Xtreme Pro. Silly me attached the file to a post that was already present and needed to bump the thread up. :o

Re: Flickering
When this happens, do all of the shapes on the canvas flicker like that, or only some/the ones you just drew?
It almost looks like some sort of weird double buffering problem where one buffer has the shape drawn and the other doesn't, and it sometimes uses the wrong one. I can't imagine how that could suddenly pop up, though.
Does the flicker still happen if you turn off video acceleration? If it does that might rule out any graphics card change that you made.
-
Re: Flickering
I haven't changed graphics cards recently, only Scotty did, so that rules that out on my end. Not sure about your other question, will play with it more tomorrow.
-
Re: Flickering
Hi,
I'm having that upload issue from time to time
I restart my router and it works again.
For the avi, don't see any flickering
I'm using the mediaplayer classic with k-lite codecs pack
found here http://www.free-codecs.com/download/...Codec_Pack.htm

Re: Flickering
I'm pretty sure that Drifter is referring to the circle shape momentarily disappearing and then reappearing when a change is made rather than a candle-like 'flicker' or like when a bulb is on the blink.
-
Re: Flickering
what I appear to see is a 'flicker' in the sense that, at the point at which the object is red and the cursor passes back over or very near to it the object appears to be suddenly redrawn
that could be a memory issue [too many other things running?] or a graphics card issue as mentioned
but... it could be something else... from the video it is not possible for me to say anything more positive, sorry

Re: Flickering
Hi,
This is probably due to the capturing program settings are set to low(bitrate,framerate,quality,....)
Or using a low codec to record
or maybe the settings for directshow or openGL are changed?
If you open the avi file in a video editor, does it have some blank frames?
If so delete them and your movie will play without the flicker.

Re: Flickering
I think you've misundertood Haakoo. The flickering issue is with Xtreme. Bob just recorded this and made an .avi for uploading here so we can see what was happening in Xtremes Windows. His .avi is for our review purposes only.

Re: Flickering
Bob, one thing might be worth a check, have you changed anything in Options under the Tune-up tab? Screenshot shows the defaults for this setting on my PC.
(Edit: I notice your OP you stated "My percentage of memory is still set at 25%" - is this what you were referring to?)
Though I played around here and it didn't seem to make any detectable difference.
As I now understand it, display problems in Xtreme are almost always due to faults within the program - not the video drivers. Nearly everything you see in an Xtreme window is rendered by Xara's own routines, the image is then sent to the screen by the video drivers. This the only major involvement by the video drivers and is so simple that it's very unlikely to go wrong.

Hi,
It's not in Xara,see attached

Re: Flickering
Sorry Hans. May I express it another way? :)
Bob created the .avi to show us what is happening in Xtreme when he draws simple shapes.
Making the avi was his way of letting us see what he is seeing.
Bobs avi is not the issue or the subject of the OP.

Re: Flickering
Steve - that info you gave in post #24 is useful to know - one of those little 'backwaters' of xara I have never [yet] explored - thanks :)
-
Re: Flickering
So it seems I'm not awake yet, better put in a cup or two
Sorry for that.
Maybe try with http://technet.microsoft.com/nl-nl/s...lt(en-us).aspx to see if some prog is running the memory(vidcard) to a standstill.
Or in the system settings if the settings are for programs or background-services
You could take a look at the direct draw, opengl settings as well

Re: Flickering
From the helpfile
Cache Control
Xara Xtreme Pro includes powerful caching support that was not available in any earlier versions of the application. Complex objects including layers, groups, bevels, shadows, blends, moulds, contours, ClipViews and Live Effects can be cached as bitmaps when they are rendered. This means that the next time these objects need to be redrawn, the bitmap can often be used instead of re-rendering the objects, making redraws and object drags very much faster. The difference is particularly noticeable with complex documents.
Since caching involves storing additional bitmaps in memory, it has the potential to increase the amount of memory used by Xara Xtreme Pro significantly. Therefore in this dialog you can turn caching on and off and you can also control how much memory is used for caching when it's turned on. Increase the percentage memory figure to make Xara Xtreme Pro cache more objects in your design, generally making redraws and object drags faster at the expense of larger memory usage. Or reduce it to lower the amount of memory that Xara Xtreme Pro uses for caching. In complex designs some cacheable objects will not be cached if there is insufficient memory to do so.
This dialog also shows you how much memory is currently being used for caching.
Live drag is described in Chapter Document Handling.
Note: cached bitmaps will only be used during object dragging if you use Live Drag. If you have Live Drag turned off, then as you would expect you will just see the outlines of objects when moving them.

Re: Flickering
In respect to my previous post.
When changing the cache control to a different setting and save the settings it reverts back to the standard 25%.
Does anybody know to save my own setting?
I saved as default template but it made no difference(only the cache control, the other options get saved)

Re: Flickering
p0ssibly a registry setting?
I've never gone into this really before - so I'm going to - if I find anything I'll post :)
-
Re: Flickering
could try:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Xara\XaraXtremePro\
Options\Cache
change value of CacheRAMPercent
I have not time to do this now, so I say at your own risk ;)
-
Re: Flickering
I think that's the internetcaching
Probably it's in folder rendering?

Re: Flickering
could be - I'm away to the real work  - catch up with it later :D

Re: Flickering
Here are my settings. This tiny snapshot on XPro screen "flickered" several times, even when I didn't touch a thing, not a key on my keyboard, not a hair on my head.

Re: Flickering
Uninstall Microsoft Intellipoint
-
Re: Flickering
-
Re: Flickering
Wow!!!!! Thank you so much! That seems to have taken care of the problem. My XPro is back to maximum stability. I tried it about 6 or 7 times. Only time will tell.
I did uninstall the Intellipoint driver (odd that I would be using that mouse) and the problem went away. AND my Intellimouse still works - all the buttons. That's even more strange.
I will keep experimenting and post here later with an update on my stability.
Thanks to all who contributed to help solve this, especially Daniel and Bill.
Scotty - Are you too using the Intellimouse?
-
Re: Flickering
Okay, I'm convinced. That was it. Not only does XPro now work flawlessly but all my other prgs now work better. They had some quirks in them that I simply attributed to something else, and now all is well.
Thanks guys.
Now can you give me the winning numbers for Saturday night's 275 million dollar powerball????? :)
