WD6 issue with publishing
Hi all,
I recently launched my website: www.guineapigsaustralia.com
Only issue is that google cannot pick up which page is the "index" page because each page has a different name i.e
http://guineapigsaustralia.com/index_3.htm
http://guineapigsaustralia.com/index_2.htm
etc
etc
It changes the "index" name every time causing my entire site to not show up in google search.
I am now tech savvy so any step by step help to fix this naming issue would be fantastic. Also will I have to do this all manually? I have over 60 pages I will need to rename if that's the only option so an easier way would be great.
Thanks all!

You do have an index.htm otherwise the URL above would load nothing, google will read it as the first page plus all the other pages.
If you wish, you can rename all other pages in the page options before you re-export and publish.
How long ago did you publish and how quickly are you expecting Google to index your site and show it on the first page of search results ;) ?
Re: WD6 issue with publishing
Hi Sledger thanks for the feedback :D
I know the home page shows "index" but so do all the other pages. Every page is called "index" For example if you click on the home page it says "index.htm" If you click on the feeding page it says "index2.htm", housing page "index3.htm" etc etc
Another site my friend did with WD6 www.ensign.com.au - this website has a different name on each page e.g if I click the home page it says "index.htm" if I click the services page it says "services.htm" if i click products it says "products.htm" etc etc.
I would love to rename all the pages like he did because the feedback from google was that they did not know which page was the actual "index" page so they just viewed it as spam.
The website has been up for a few months now.
Any help would be great.
Thanks Heaps!!
Re: WD6 issue with publishing
You can rename page filenames in the Web Properties - Page tab.
Re: WD6 issue with publishing
Hi Xtom,
Which section though?
There are two naming tabs:
Page filename
or
Page Tittle
I've done an update on the site already but still remains the same...
Sorry im pretty new at WD6 and all!!
Re: WD6 issue with publishing
Use both, so for example set the page file name to news.htm or just news (I think WD will add .htm on export anyway) and the page title could be a bit more descriptive or just use news aswell. The page title is just as important seo wise if not more so.

Page 'Title' is site wide and should be entered in the 'WebSite' tab.
Page 'Filename' entered in the Page tab for each select page is the name by which WD exports the *.htm
If you don't enter any names, then by default WD will export index.htm / index_2.htm / index_3.htm and so on.
Google will not consider this naming convention as spam (where did you hear such a thing?), so don't worry about this
Re: WD6 issue with publishing
Thanks all,
I've fixed this naming issue however I now have another issue. Since I have changed all the pagefile names now when I try to upload these changes it does not work. The website is not updating with these changes at all when i publish.
I located these two threads:
http://talkgraphics.com/showthread.p...update+publish
http://talkgraphics.com/showthread.p...update+publish
I tried both these options but cannot figure out what Im doing wrong. When I type /public_html it says the file directory cannot be created. I tried to delete all the previous files and export the document first, then publish but still no change.
Any ideas?

Re: WD6 issue with publishing
So i've been playing around with this issue with no luck :'(
My website will now not upload any updates at all. Every time I publish WD6 does not export the changes I have made at all.
I have attached images below of my files, page names, page tittles and highlighted the area in my website which will not update. I also have changed a page in WD6 and they will not update on my website at all.
Solutions I have tried are:
Adding .htm to page file name
Adding .html to page file name
deleting all page file names
Deleting all files with _html
Deleting all files with _htm
Typing /public_html in sub folder
Exporting first then publishing website
Waiting for website to change for 24 hours
refreshing web page after upload
Any help/ideas? I'm really at my wits end here, i've spent so much time and energy making this website - I know it may not seem like much but it would really mean the world to me if anyone can help or even have a suggestion...
Thank you..

Re: WD6 issue with publishing
1. Are you uploading the files to the correct folder on the correct server?
2. Try refreshing the page in the browser incase it's cached.
When you export the files to your local hard drive they should have any changes you made but check this anyway to make sure. If so it's likely one of the two scenarios above.
Re: WD6 issue with publishing
Seems to work fine here. It might be a browser cache issue. Try pressing CTRL+f5 to get your browser to download a fresh version

Re: WD6 issue with publishing
Thanks for the replies,
Yes I am uploading to the correct server - I have checked with the my friend who manages the server for me and he said the FTP names etc are all correct. I hope this is what you are referring to :o
I found an error on the webpage now please refer to attached. The buttons are now all out of proportion from the last trial at publishing and uploading...
Is this because I deleted the "pagefile" name completely and tried to upload? That's the only change I made....
Should I try deleting all my files again? Maybe I should try uploading from another computer and D/load WD6 on it?

Re: WD6 issue with publishing
I just went to that url in your screenshot and it looks different here, see screenshot attached. It looks to me like your browser is showing you cached images. Try refreshing the page in your browser with CTRL + F5
Re: WD6 issue with publishing
Thank You!!! Okay that's a relief I was begining to think I had totally ruined it!:-O
Ok now it updated since I deleted the "pagefile" name. As that is the last solution I tried.
When I enter a "pagefile" name the website won't update.
Is this a common error?
Re: WD6 issue with publishing
It's not an error at all. There is no error.
If you change the page file name (eg: this.htm to that.htm) and change the relative links (so they now point to that.htm where necessary), save then publish - it will update.
Your browsers cache (files already downloaded from last viewing by your browser) may serve older pages/graphic for a while - but refreshing will generally fix this.
