Unkown PNG Error has occured
Hi,
i sent this to another post and joined the wrong thread maybe ?
so thought i would try a new post to see if i can get some answers here
I have the same problem Unknown PNG error has occured
i already found a back up file and renamed it this worked fine.
i keep getting the pop up upgrade and install now to upgrade pop up
i just want to continue using Xara Pro X 17 without having to pay $129 for the upgrade
and it is so far impossible to stop these annoying upgrade pop ups?
now the Unknown PNG error has occured has returned making it impossible to open my file .xar
this has happened twice now where i have to find a back up and rename it to open it?
There is a serious problem here?
I have contacted Magix about this but it can take several days before they answer?
Anyone else having this problem and know how to fix it?
its almost like i am being forced to upgrade or else!!
Kind regards

There are recent Posts on this very subject over the last few days on TG; try an Advanced search for "nag".
This is unrelated to your next ask.

XAR files can get corrupted.
Find a backup in File > Open recent > Backups. Open the last one that does not have the problem and resave with a new filename.
If no good for you, try and recover with this approach: https://www.talkgraphics.com/showthr...459#post616459.
Failing another TG solution, you may have to upload your file to Xara for fixing.

Re: Unkown PNG Error has occured
Hi Acorn,
My software:-WD ProX 17:
Many thanks for your help,
i have been using Xara since it began many years ago have currently 60 website I maintain
some websites are 80 pages long some are 150MB to 420mb in size
i generally can open them edit them and upload through 3rd party servers with little or no problems.
I generally only get the hiccups just before renewals are due?
and this is the case year after year for the past 20 years from the days of Xara X 2000.
I normally just renew and carry on with little or no problems but in the past few years this upgrade
scenario is baffling and i have refrained a few times to upgrade i upgraded last year and now this is the response i got from Magix?
no more than 50MB huh!! and dividing into separate folders what a complete nightmare!!
and re-install and revert back to pro x 16?
Just look at the response! how could anyone understand how to separate the files from this?
i would struggle with this.
Thank you for sharing the project and the screenshots, that is very helpful.
In terms of the "PNG error" message please check File --> Open recent --> Backups. Otherwise I am afraid you would need to uninstall the program and run a new installation. Should you need to do so herewith the installation link:
https://dl03.magix.net/designerprox16_dlm.exe
Please bear in mind that it would be the version 16 you would need to come back to after the new installation though as your update service has expired. In this connection you will unfortunately not be able to get rid of the notification as this is not possible.
Looking at the size of the file I can see that it has 442MB - the project file *.web should never be larger than 50 MB otherwise you will unfortunately experience issues.
You can divide the project into a separate files creating a new project via "File / New" and copy individual pages from one project to the other. The links of the navigation as well as between individual elements are adapted automatically. Then upload both to the server. Please pay attention to the name of the files, the "index.htm" may occur only once.
Proceed as follows to split your project:
Copy your project as many times as you want it to be split.
The project is called: MyHomepage Copy it 3 times and name the projects MyHomepage Part1 MyHomepage Part2 MyHomepage Part3
Open MyHomepage (Part1)
Remove the pages that should be in Part 2 and 3.
Save MyHomepage (Part1).
Open MyHomepage (Part2)
Remove the pages you want to be in parts 1 and 3.
Save MyHomepage (Part2).
Open MyHomepage Part3
Remove the pages that are in part 1 and 2.
Save MyHomepage (Part3).
Export the pages from MyHomepage (Part1) offline into the directory in which the project is located.
Then export the pages from MyHomepage (Part2) to the directory in which the project is located, and then the pages from MyHomepage (Part3).
You should specify a file name in each case.
Select the page name of the first page of MyHomepage (Part2) or MyHomepage (Part3).
Then upload all 3 projects one after the other.
Then upload all 3 projects one after the other.

Re: Unkown PNG Error has occured
@condor365, a load of tosh mainly.
Magix are not the application developers so I would hold out for Rob-Xar, whom I have just pinged, to have a look.
i have never heard of a filesize limit of 50MB ever! XDPXv17 is 64-bit.
i have my own and clients' design files over 50MB.
I do have problems but this is invariably due to poor coding in v16 and up as earlier versions work perfectly.
Do not discard your v17, no matter what!
The guidance is childish and make not account of NavBars working across different design files.
It also failed to address how you recover and access your file to perform the unnecessary slicing.
Try ExpandXar to unpack your file and try opening that.

Re: Unkown PNG Error has occured
Hi Acorn,
Many thanks for your understanding. I have simply loaded the backup and renamed
it with a different name as it conflicts even with a slightly similar file name.
I can then edit and use it no probs until the next error pop up.
All my files are in Google Drive Sync much easier and cheaper than dropbox.
when Windows 10 updates my X builder is removed from design gallery?
and i need to login to xaratemplates.com and install a fresh version.
there is a bug in my version i am convinced!!
I will use the ExpandXar next time.
Really appreciate you looking into this and look forward to what Rob-Xar has to say.

c365, Rob says "There is no file size limit, PNG error usually means a corrupted file, which we can fix. He can send a message in Intercom and we can take a look".
Go to https://help-cloud-plus.xara.com and open the Intercomm dialog, bottom right.
You have a tendency to throw in curve balls.
If your design file is truly massive and you make further cahnges during a sync operation, it is quite possible your file can become corrupt. I had this in early Dropbox days. I would ensure my Xara Backup times were around every 30 minutes and not, say, 10.
I am guessing you have your xaratemplates in a Cloud location so when W10 updates, it loses the connection. I am sure you do not have to re download the xaratemplates afresh.
If you have a Xara application bug, then run as Administrator the one time. That usually works.
Get you file working.
Tune your Xara application.
Raise a separate request with MagiXara for each separate issue.

Re: Unkown PNG Error has occured
there is certainly a maximum size of bitmap that xara can edit an use internally.. but it is way above the normal size for website use
edit - though if you are referring to the file size [not image size] then they may not be
-
Re: Unkown PNG Error has occured
We were discussing the design file size (.XAR / .WEB).
I would probably never aim for anything over 100MB.
100 pages with lots of Repeat Groups makes the code looping dire.
250 pages of pure text and editing inside you can see things going slower.
Avoid adding lots of images.
Optimise if you can or link to large files instead.
Definitely double ditto for videos.
Never go for Supersite and Variants.
Use rectangles over odd shapes.
Don't use Shadows.
Use CSS for Fills.
Don't rotate Text.
As a last resort, split a site into functional units.

Re: Unkown PNG Error has occured
Hi Acorn,
This is great i will have to go to the intercomm later it says come back tomorrow
i was late getting back to your reply.
I do have my file back and working under a new file name and is current and working ok now
no PNG error just annoying impossible to remove upgrade pop ups
Yes the sync issue was there when I was using Dropbox too.
I have a copy of X builder saved and will install again.
at some point Michael from Xaratemplates did email me to say i needed to re-download the latest version of X Builder
as the windows update had corrupted it?
and I will set it to 30 minutes instead of ten

I hate to say it but to get this repeatedly sounds like a hard disk failing.Have you run chkdsk at all or or utility in recent times.
What is happening with your on-line backup? You ought to be able to perform a file diff with that to see where the corruption is creeping in.

Re: Unkown PNG Error has occured
Hi Acorn
Hmm! maybe you are right ? this C drive is over 6 years old
the D: Drive was cloned last year so the D: Drive is fairly new
but the C: Drive which Xara runs on is 6 years or more perhaps time for newer drive?
its an i5
c: (NTFS on drive 0) * 248.92 GB 99.39 GB free
d: (NTFS on drive 1) 1000.20 GB 479.57 GB free
* Operating System is installed on c:
not sure how to look for the online back up ? perform a file diff?
all my files are saved to Google Dive sync
cheers

Re: Unkown PNG Error has occured
chkdsk shows scanned the file system and found no problems
maybe a defrag is needed? haven't done one in 10 months.
My PC gets tuned once week and purged of junk files using Revo Uninstaller Pro
Maybe i should run Spinrite from https://www.grc.com/intro.htm
Again after all these years it can't be my hard drive failing everytime there is an upgrade looming?
maybe i will succumb and pay the upgrade that usually works.

Re: Unkown PNG Error has occured
Hi Again,
I am now getting this error code and i cant even start or open the program?
The program could not be started. The installation folder may be damaged .
Reinstalling the program could remedy the problem.
Please contact support if this error occurs again ERROR CODE: -59
I have sent this to Magix for support i have run the program as administrator
i have cleaned my PC run all diagnostics - hard drive is healthy? chckdsk is no errors or no virus ?
Again i repeat this i get these issues every time there is a renewal due?
How frustrating is this?
i am afraid to install the program again PRO X 17 as it will possibly revert back to version Pro x 16 as i have not paid the $129 for the update? i am confused Xara/Magix have put this this seemingly mandatory yearly payment schedule.
Anyone else have the same issues?
any advice is most welcome
Kind regards

Re: Unkown PNG Error has occured
I am sorry that you have this problem. I have always advised having a second copy activated on another machine to cover this eventuality.
The version reversion is crass. No company, however, could purposely cripple a product, especially one that states you are entitled to use it in perpetuity.

this can have a dowm side as well as an up - things can get 'purged' that should not be
the error message you are getting now sounds to me like the sort you get when the program cannot communicate anymore withe the magix server, and that can be because of third party 'security' software
also the fact that you get an issue every time you upgrade suggests there is something on your computer 'getting in the way'

Re: error code 59
Hi Acorn,
I found this? error code-59 maybe triggered by win 10 upgrades
https://www.magix.info/us/tutorials/...rade--1142475/
i have made a note of my serial number and will attempt to reinstall the program but i am still unsure where to install the Pro X 17 from? as it is not in my customer area under registered products even though i have always registered them. I have informed Magix about this, maybe they will be kind enough to send me a new download link? but will it be for a previous version of Pro x 16 as i have not paid the update price yet!!
Kind regards

Re: Unkown PNG Error has occured
Hi Handrawn,
Thanks for your help too much appreciated ,
the issues occur usually about a month before i get the annoying update pop us and continue
until i pay up. i have not paid this time and the errors just escalate "its not happening when i update!"
I have allowed or given permission for the software to open in my AVG Ultimate paid for top of the range Anti-Virus software program too.
i believe its the win 10 update that's causing this?
i will post later when i find out
Kind regards

I do Have a laptop with a second copy but that is is inactive and you need to activate one or the other depends which machine you want to start up, you cannot just run it ad hoc, which means registering each time you want to use it it on one or the other i asked Magix about this and they say it can only be used on one pc at any one time. really annoying !
but Magix don't even have it in my customer area that its registered all my other software that i ever bought is listed there!.
Hopefully i will get this cleared up wih Magix soon.
Kind regards

Magix are wrong. Both can be activated. You have two licences for use. You must only be using one copy at a time so if you are moving from one keyboard to another that constitutes fair use. If worried, just close one program.
Acorn
-
Re: Unkown PNG Error has occured
agree, that applies to all my xara programs - and if you have been activating/deactivating a lot that could in itself cause issues, as there is almost certainly a limit to the number of times you can do this over a given period even if not explicitly stated
your program not showing in your magix account is not a good sign either if you bought it from them
-
Re: Unkown PNG Error has occured
Hi all,
Update to what happened with Magix support.
here is the response i got in BOLD
The program is distributed with an update service.
You have bought version 16 and have access to it until you renew the update service. If you extend the update service, you will purchase version 17 and can download it again at if you need to reinstall.
In your customer account the program is shown as Xara Designer Pro X365 without an version number. If you click on "more details" you will see the version number of the program you have installed and also you will see the duration of the service.
i checked my customer area and looked at show more details and it shows my version
of XDP Pro X365 with serial number valid until = Unlimited. update service = Expired. (with install program and instructions)
Following activations with this serial number are in use
1. XDP Pro X (16) assigned to my PC
2. XDP Pro X(16) also assigned to my PC
My question is when i upgraded last year from Pro X 16 to Pro X 17
I installed this on My Pc and Lap top which i should be able to use simultaneously
but when i tried to use the laptop Pro x 17 it said i had to deactivate the PC version first then activate the lap top
version well i left it and just carried on using the Pro X 17 PC version as i thought deactivate would lose it?
Duh! silly me!!
now my PC version of Pro X 17 will not even start and i should reinstall it but where do i reinstall it from? it looks as though the only version i can re-install is the Pro X 365 and use the serial number that is unlimited. Magix tell me that as i have not updated my current Pro X 17
this re-install will revert back to Pro X 16 so does this mean i will no longer be able to use the Pro X 17 version unless i pay the $129
presuming my Pro X365 will be installed as Pro X 16?
how confusing is this ? does anyone else agree with me that this is the most complicated update /upgrade system ever!
In my twenty + years i have purchased literally hundreds and hundreds of programs but never experienced anything as complicated as this?
I am still not sure how i can re-install my current Pro X 17 and run it without updating or paying another years fees i should be able to run this without updating/paying shouldn't I?
At the moment my perviously installed version of Pro X 16 is currently working fine with nor error pop ups, just the persistent pop up to update.
it look as though i have now lost the ability to use the Pro X 17 and no way of re-installing that same version as it is only a yearly update which reverts back to Pro X 16 if you don't pay up!!
Frustrated beyond belief, especially with support tickets back and forth with Magix support.

Re: Unkown PNG Error has occured
as I think acorn said - do not uninstall version 17 as you will then only be able to install version 16 - as magix confirmed
I would try deactivating both entries for your pc in your magix account
then try reactivating the pc and laptop from within the program
this has worked for me in the past
but I repeat do not uninstall/reinstall version 17 on either computer unless all else fails and you will have to go back to ver 16 or pay again [in which case you may wish to wait for version 18?]
it is with out doubt the most unhelpful update system I have ever had the misfortune to deal with

Thank you Handrawn this is a comfort to know you feel the same way
yes as i thought all the updates i had throughout the update paid year
would be lost? if I had to revert back to Pro X 16
catch 22 here i cant open the Pro X 17 to even update it for $129
suppose i was able too, does this mean it will become Pro X 18 and
next time renewal is due same thing again it will always revert back to Pro X 16?
if i don't pay up
i cant open Pro X 17??? error code -59
Magix have told me to uninstall and re-install from my customer area and we have seen there is only the option of Pro X 16
i am screwed which ever way you look at it and the only option is by Magix "gentle persuasion" to pay up $129
and next time renewal is due same scenario etc etc so i am compelled to keep paying for the updates to keep the yearly upgrades
at the moment Magix do not or have not told me how i can reinstall my current version of pro X 17 without paying ?
as it will not open ?
i am now confined to use my older non updated version of Pro X 16
i am a prisoner in my own software!!
Kind regards

Re: Unkown PNG Error has occured
did you try what I suggested ?
do the deactivations first - it should not be showing two for the same pc - if it has got glitched your program will not open - deactivating both in your account may clear this, and let you proceed

Hi Handrawn,
Thank you, I have deactivated both Pro X 16 from the customer area - My Products.
i restarted PC and run as administrator I click on the Pro X 17 and the same error code pops up error code -59 the software blips up for a few seconds and then vanishes. I am unable to open or start Pro X 17
the error code-59 is caused by a win 10 update and Magix have a fix for this and that is to completely un-install any versions of Pro X 17 and they give folder paths of the files to delete and then i can re-install but at this point i wouldn't know where to install from? they say install from Prox365 and enter the serial number but this will only be Pro X 16 does this mean i would have lost any updates i previously purchased last year when i upgraded from Pro X 16 to Pro X 17 for $89
and now this year the update is $129 this is approx 40% increase
At this stage my only option would be to re-install Pro X 365 and then put that serial number back in
as there are no other options available
or i just carry on using my old Pro X 16
as it stands i do not have Pro x 17 anymore
and Magix keep repeating the same instructions and basically i have no other option but to pay the $129
will this then become Pro X 18? and after the update expires for Pro X 18 and i don't renew, will this then revert back to Pro X365 /Pro X 16.
Many thanks for all your advice and help i am sure others will benefit from this thread too, hopefully someone from Xara or Magix can explain this conundrum and maybe help a loyal customer out here?
I just wanted to keep using my Pro X 17 that i updated last year for one year and was prepared this year to carry on using it without the online catalogue !
I am trapped that's for sure but i can still use previous version of Pro X 16 to upload my websites.
I will just have to accept that the payment i made for the Update last year has now expired so has my Pro X 17 updates
and i am now back to Pro X 16.
Kind regards

Re: Unkown PNG Error has occured
so magix are saying a windows update is to blame?
how come there are no others in the same situation?
they should at least allow you access back to version 17, it is hardly your fault...
I suggest you contact Xara - magix may be in charge of the distribution, but it is still xara's product and their goodwill

Answer form Xara:-
This is the response i get from Xara trying to sell a more expensive package of xara pro + lifetime at 50% off thats about £96 per year .
Your enquiry relates to products that are sold and supported by Magix. They also manage all of your subscription details. I recommend reaching them directly for support at https://support2.magix.com/customer/.
You mentioned that you are not interested in upgrading so I'll only mention this quickly; we offer a lifetime 50% discount for Xara users wishing to upgrade to Pro+. Let me know if you'd like to explore this option further.

Re: Unkown PNG Error has occured
Finally! Phew!!!
I got through to Magix on the phone and a kind person from Germany helped me to download a replacement copy of my original Pro x 17 with a new serial number to enter.
i uninstalled the previous corrupted version using Revo uninstaller pro ( brilliant bit of software) gets rid if all hidden files
the new re-installation was perfect and i am now using the reinstalled version of Pro x 17
Xara did offer me a 50% lifetime discount for the latest Pro X+
which is £101 per year but if you don't renew after the year is up you can no longer edit documents within the Pro X +
or you can only use the free cloud version which still wont let you edit documents. In essence if we need all the latest updates and best running software we need to pay a yearly fee which is consistent with many other web-design software platforms, any decent ones all want some form of yearly or monthly payment
I think I will stick with my Pro X 17 with out updates and just put up with the persistent annoying pop up update for now.
A huge thank you to Acorn and Handrawn for your support and helping and guiding me through this process much appreciated, without your help i would have screwed it all up for sure!!

Condor, now you can relax you can think through the Xara offer.
These are the things you need to do immediately:
- Assuming you are happy with XDPXv17, install it onto a second machine.
- Do not uninstall any v16 as it is a different licence.
- If you do not have v16 currently active on two machines, add it too.
- You are in a good place as you can have v16 + v17 on one machine or all spread out over four.
- If you have a text editor that can search across files then use it for "string=" for all files under C:\ProgramData\Xara\; this will list all you machine installs and the Licence Number.
- Launch each Xara Desktop application (XDA) and go to the Local Designs Gallery (Shift+F10) and right-click on the Blue folder titles available and pick Download all. This grabs the On-line Content Catalogue content and stores it locally.
- You can share these downloads across other XDA Caches or use a master and reference it from all.
When it it time for renewing consider Xara Designer Pro+ for a year or even a month to see if there are features you need.
If not you can always revert to your v17 plus content, happy that you have secured a safe path.

What is happening with your on-line backup? You ought to be able to perform a file diff with that to see where the corruption is creeping in.

Hi Acorn
I have found out that one of my hard drives had a yellow warning for the health of the D drive 1TB 70% free
found with defraggler from piriform (CC Cleaner ) it said to save important files and replace hard drive as soon as possible.
I have a clone docking station bought a new hard drive also 1TB i removed my hard drive from the PC and cloned the suspect drive to the new one after 6 hours it was completed i replaced the new drive and bingo it all works like lightning speeds etc.
No more hangs /freezing up /error messages the drive was from 2013 just got corrupted for some reason or just too old and hard worked!!
you were right all along about my error messages!!
Thanks again for your support always appreciated and a big thank you to Handdrawn.
