Add-in for Dreamweaver MX won't work

I just bought the MenuMaker 1.1 and when I installed it and selected to dl the Dreamweaver add-in, in gave an Explorer error message and aborted installation. I re-installed with out selecting any add-in and it installed correctly, then I dl'ed the add-in from XaraOnline as they instructed on the help site. Now I can insert Xara modules from DW insert menu, but I still can't see any insert option for MenuMaker in DW. Did anyone else have this problem, and how did you solve it??

The extension adds menu maker to the insert menu and not to the insert bar where you will find icons for webstyle 4 and xara modules.

Is menu maker not displayed from the insert menu

I know it adds it to the insert menu, but it isn't there! the Xara Module insert is on the meni bar as well as the Webstyle 4 (whichI don't even have!).

i am having the same problem. after downloading them they do not show up in dreamweaver. has any one resolved this for you,or are you just left hanging. meo

So much for customer support! If Dreamweaver MX2004 is corrupting the add-in as Xara suggests, Xara should fix the add-in to make it entirely compatible with Dreamweaver rather than recommend I unintstall and reinstall Dreamweaver! The FAQ link mentioned above - the link is still there but the page it leads to is blank... Makes one wonder why...

This is now at least the 4th time I've had a problem with Menu Maker and Dreamweaver. Every time I either upgrade to a new version of DW or MM or there's an update (like recently, from DW MX 2004 7 to 7.01), Menu Maker goes whoopsy as described in this thread.

This is getting to be a major PITA. Last time, after upgrading from MX to MX 2004, it took me several whole days to sort the whole mess out with Xara taking a total of 4-5 days to get it sorted. They asked me to send them the menu.xml's from the DW files, then they sent them back to me having obviously altered them and I had to overwrite the original ones with theirs. It worked, so that was great although I was hugely delayed in preparing a site for somebody as a result.

Sure, worked great - till now, only a few weeks later. Now DW went totally ga-ga after the recent update, various extensions went whoopsy, and the screen jumps about like mad until I start a new document.

From what I can make out on Macromedia's site (and I'm no expert), it would seem the new 7.01 update has a slightly different configuration for extensions; so I can only imagine that whatever Xara did to my menu.xml has royally messed it up with the new update.

I am NOT a happy bunny!!! Suffice to say that I will now go find some other program to do a similar job and will not use Menu Maker for future jobs (when I sort out my messed-up DW), as this is now 2-3 cock-ups too many.

It seems that lots of peole are having trouble with this. MX2004 does have different requirements for extensions so unless one is written especially for it you can run into trouble. I never even bothered downloading it - its so easy to insert your menu manually. Go in at code level, put cursor where you want it and paste the line of code that the menu app has created. Or use insert javascript and navigate to your js files.

I think that's what I'll be doing from now on if and when I need, insert it manually using the JS file.

Xara, though, ought to nevertheless do something - even if only to say that integration with DW is not well supported...

When i upgraded my Dreamweaver, i read the message displayed dutring the upgarde and disabled by extensions. Xara doesnt use the extension manager so i removed the extensions via add/remove programs prior to completing the upgrade and then re-installed the extensions after my upgarde and hey presto - no problems whatsoever.

So im my case it was about following the instructions displayed!

With regards to the FAQ, ensure you are accepting cookies from xara.com and you should be able to view the faqs

Yes, I am accepting cookies from xara.com... I can view all the FAQS except that one particular one. If someone else is able to view that one, maybe they'd like to post it here so's we can all see it?

1. go to x:\Documents and Settings\USER\Application Data\Macromedia\Dreamweaver MX\Configuration\Menus
rename the file menus.xml to be named menusold.xml

2. Restart Dreamweaver. If problems continue then

Clean out the Temp directory.
a. Go to the Start Menu and select Run.
b. Type cmd and click OK.
c. In the DOS prompt, type set.
d. Press Enter.
e. Find the values for TEMP and TMP. These represent the location of the Temp directory on your computer.
Go to the location of the Temp directory and delete all files and folders in it.

Then reinstall the extension from http://xara.com/downloads/addins.asp

4. Re-start Dreamweaver. If problems continue then

I see what you mean, it is now giving me a blank page too.
What they wanted you to do was uninstall dreamweaver and xara then reinstall dreamweaver follwed by reinstalling xara.
Just to let you know I have had it with places that don't offer phone support. The lesson that I have learned is that I will not purchace anything on line, any more, that does not offer valid tech support.LET THE BUYER BEWARE! Be sure that you checkout support before you buy!

No offence taken, maybe in my annoyance I didn't make myself too clear, sorry 'bout that.

I went through all of what you describe a month ago with Xara when I upgraded from DW MX to DW MX 2004 (having previously had a problem in Jan when upgrading to MM 1.1). It worked fine after that even if it took me several days to find out how and it took Xara several days to reply to support tickets.

Menu Maker is not a true extension in that it's not a .mxp file but is an .exe (nor is it a Macromedia endorsed extension). In view of both this and of Xara's eternal problem with DW, and knowing what I went through a month ago, and in view of what happened yesterday, I've since fully uninstalled both DW and XARA (yet AGAIN) so's to be able to carry out the DW MX 2004 update (not upgrade, the new 7.01 update from 7.0). I not only uninstalled them both, I deleted ALL remnant Xara and Dreamweaver folders in C:Program Files and in C:Docs+SettingsUser...DreamweaverMX2004 so as to have no trace of Xara's modified menus.xml or other files, and I re-installed DW only totally from scratch to start with, in order to get a clean fresh install. I then started to re-install my DW extensions but not Menu Maker. After the 2nd extension, my DW interface started flickering and jumping about again when I open DW. It will only stop if I click on something within DW. I initially downloaded and did the DW 7.01 update as my DW interface was already slightly flickering on start-up (albeit very much less so) when I had changed the menus.xml files as sent to me by Xara.

No-one else has reported this problem with the new DW update, so I now can't help but wonder if somehow there's still some trace of Xara's files somewhere as the only time I've ever had a problem before with DW is with Xara when they sent me their re-written menu.xml file.

Nevertheless, all that is besides the point to some degree (although any help/suggestions would be appreciated! http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif) . The point is that none of us should have to even go through the process of all this uninstalling and re-installing (and backing up both DW and MM in order to not lose our settings, sites, related files, projects etc,). The only reason we end up going through this unnecessary and time-consuming palaver is because of some bug in Menu Maker relating to integration with DW that Xara don't seem able to fix nor do they seem to be able to notify us of in their FAQ (now that they've made the relevant page blank...).

One can never tell with any software one buys what the support is going to be like, whether online or from reputable developers. Take Symantec (Nortons) for instance - no support unless you pay $20 odd for it, valid or not! OTH, I've come across some downloaded software that claims to have valid tech support - some have the most amazing friendly speedy support and then there are others that totally ignore you forever more; one just can't tell no matter what they claim. Some have forums, like this one, which is always of use :-), and in some forums the developer takes an active part, whereas in others it's entirely up to the goodwill and help of other users whilst the developers never show their faces.

Nevetheless, I'm still not prepared to fiddle with the menus.xml in view of the new update, nor does it solve my jittery DW interface...

You will be presented with the option to install the Dreamweaver extension when you install Webstyle 3, Webstyle 4 or Menu Maker. If you chose not to install the extension when you installed your Xara product, the steps below will tell you how to install the extension on its own. The extension can also be used for easy insertion of Xara Online Modules (for more information visit xaraonline.com).

To install the Dreamweaver extension:

Ensure Dreamweaver and any Xara programs are closed.
Download the Dreamweaver extension from here.
Once downloaded, run the file and follow the on-screen instructions to install the software.
Once installed, start Dreamweaver and you should now have options listed under the Insert menu for Xara products.
