How to remove pixelization enlarging small image?
Hello!
I have small image and want to place on desktop as wallpaper but when I enlarge it, it is pixelized.
I used linear interpolation at resizing, but helped not.
Is possible by any way to enhance picture to avoid pixelization by exchanging pixel edges with curved lines?
Thank you for your support.

Re: How to remove pixelization enlarging small image?
Pixels are a fixed unit. The smaller they are, the less visible they are.
When you enlarge an image, the pixels enlarge as well.
The display softens the pixels by anti-aliasing the image and this is what makes it look soft.
There is some software available that can enlarge an image and maintain some but not all of the sharpness.
One thing you can try is create a bitmap copy at a very high resolution, say 2400dpi. And then see if this enlarges any better.

Re: How to remove pixelization enlarging small image?
you could try an online image enlarger service but if you don't get at least passable results you may need to spend time and money using something like photoshop and/or third party plugins such as :https://www.on1.com/products/resize/...SAAEgIKT_D_BwE
whichever way you do it, don't try to increase it all in one go, increase it in steps - interpolation is a fancy word for guesswork - the less the program has to guess during any one pass the better
you may get better results if you start with an image copy that does not have antialiasing; that said, some sharpening along the way may help if you leave it on; but it depends on the source material so without seeing the image, and knowing by how much you need to resize it, its difficult to say more

Re: How to remove pixelization enlarging small image?
And the more obvious answer, start with a larger image. :)

sadly having yesterday watched, [as real life requires me to do else I might not] the BBC live broadcast of the endless brexit proceedings at westminster, I am of the opinion that obvious and achievable can be light-years apart

Get a larger resolution version, or choose another image with better resolution.
Don't waste time doing anything else.

one person's waste of time is another person's quest for the holy grail
I have lost count of the number of things I have learned by persuing things that did not work....

Indeed, but that's not the 'quest' here.

Re: How to remove pixelization enlarging small image?
alas poor metaphor, I knew thee :D
its for wallpaper, desktop presumably and therefore likely a personal thing
we don't all think the same way

All I said was it was a waste of time enlarging it. A comment made into a saga..

Re: How to remove pixelization enlarging small image?
'twas the way you said it
who are any of us to decide it would be a waste of time when we don't have enough info to make that call - I have lots of images that I have no idea where they came from and the likes of tineye draw blank - and it could be a treasured family photo or such - we don't know do we...

Re: How to remove pixelization enlarging small image?
There is a proprietary format called Deja Vu that uses affine transforms (maths) to encode images. It is the closest thing to curved edges and not pixelation you will find. There used to be a free editor available.
Use some of the on-line searches for images and you may find a larger version.
What resolution is the image and what is your desktop resolution?

DJV[U] files...? that's a format for mixed content, so in that sense similar to PDF, possibly epub formats too...

Re: How to remove pixelization enlarging small image?
I'm a great believer in Shutterstock.com They have an excellent selection of images, and if take one of their packages the images are very reasonable. Something like $10-15 per download. Life is short.
-
Re: How to remove pixelization enlarging small image?
whilst I agree with life being short I can't help but feel that the consensus of this thread is that the OP should be doing something other than what they actually asked for help about

I'd say my advice was very much to the point. If you have a better solution, I'd be happy to hear and it I'm sure the OP would too.
All of the 'solutions' to enlarging images from smaller to larger sizes involve losing definition resulting in blurry images or heavily processed imagery that are unnatural - usually sharpening techniques of the blurred images. Some years ago there was a flurry of activity based around fractal encoding of images so they could be zoomed in infinitely without pixelating, but I'm not sure these days where that software went and I don't think that technique could create detail where there was none.
This is again a thread where a OP asks a question and leaves us to wonder the exact circumstances behind the question so that we can offer the best way forward even if it's not exactly the answer that the OP wanted to hear.
Often the best answer to a question is the one that provides the best overall solution rather than simply answers a question that may be unanswerable or indeed the wrong question for the circumstance.
[edit: My guess is that Mirkosoft may want to enlarge old 8-bit and 16-bit game imagery from the past ]

Re: How to remove pixelization enlarging small image?
thats a fair answer Paul and a whole load better than a brusque 'don't waste time doing anything else' - you may 'know better' but like you now say, you are guessing, we are all guessing...
that said

it is impossible to evaluate the best solution with insufficient information ;)

Re: How to remove pixelization enlarging small image?
You can try Reshade from http://www.reshade.com/ which is for upscale images. You have to make sure you go to this website because there is another Reshade for game development else where on the internet.

Ray, are these guys safe? Whenever I see "free" software I wonder where the monetisation comes from to make the software viable.
Please make sure this software is legit before downloading - nobody wants to download free extras that are up to no good.

I love the way discussions evolve into thrashes.
I tried a free online app called Freeenlarge.com (in this case you probably get what you pay for).
But for my money and time and effort, I would look for a stock image that is large to begin with and be done with it.
And by way of comparison, the results with Reshade.

I don't see any current 'thrashes'.
If you mean my question to Ray, it's a simple question, nothing more. Not all free downloads are benign, even if they work.

That only works if you don't require a specific image and a high-res alternative exists, but you're right.
This is another thread where a question is asked and then nothing more is heard from the OP.

Re: How to remove pixelization enlarging small image?
I have had this program for a number of years and have not had any problems with it. First found out about it on here as a matter of fact.

I asked because I've never heard of it, nor could I find anything online about it - reviews etc. I'm suspicious always of any download from an unknown and possibly dangerous source. The bad guys infect sofwtare with malware and dangle free software as a carrot to reel in the unwary.
I'm glad you've had no issues.

Re: How to remove pixelization enlarging small image?
i too would be wary of any program with no monitarisation, donations at least, and no obvious footprint
i have the option of installing in a sandbox to monitor what the program gets up to...
the manual mentions a pro version but no sign lof it on site

Win 10 pro or a 3rd party one? I've played around with the Windows one a bit. I don't have a lot of use for it, but it appears to work well.

Re: How to remove pixelization enlarging small image?
third party - acronis - i use it for backups, ransomware protection as well

Ray - Thanks for the tip.

Re: How to remove pixelization enlarging small image?
Ok, I tried some things, but I think there's no way how to do it.
Main problem of that image is that I have only one source - it is photo and only small image, but thank you for help and suggestions.

I'm glad you came back into the conversation - it shows we aren't talking to ourselves.

Re: How to remove pixelization enlarging small image?
Hello,
So I'm trying to do essentially the same thing. I want to make a decal for a welder faceplate and the only images I can find are either blurry already (probably from being resized) or keystoned or photographed.
https://pg1.b5z.net/get/ob5z/s1000-*...25G_903125.jpg
This image needs is straight but blurry. It also needs to be scaled up 110% approximately to match the dimensions of the welder. What's the best way to sharpen this? I'm fairly resigned to retyping the text and placing it. Also I'd like to make it only black and white and elminate the grayscale in between. Here are some other images I've found that are clearer but have other issues preventing me from making a decal from them.

I've got adobe illustrator but I'm a newbie to graphic design, I primarily do design work from an engineering side (i.e. technical 3D modeling for manufacturing) not an artistic side.

I would do one of two things.
First I would take your last image then distort it to get rid of the perspective - get it to the right shape.
First option - load to a background layer in illustrator, then place a layer on top and use the illustrator tools to reproduce it.
Second option - load into your favourite CAD/3D package and do the same.
It's highly unlikely you can make a decal of a quality you will be happy with from the image.
It won't take you long to re-create it.

Re: How to remove pixelization enlarging small image?
That's funny I never thought to do it in my CAD software, :think:I was hung up on a "magic" solution in Illustrator but redrawing it over top of the first image definitely would be the easiest for me. DUH!
Thanks for your help!
