Hello !
I've started to translate Xtreme into French and I was wondering: where can I upload the .po file for other people to contribute ?
Good news ! I'm french too ! Tell me when the file will be uploaded and how to change the langage.
thanks for your work skadge
Bonjour ! :)
Everything is explained here : http://www.xaraxtreme.org/developers...nslations.html
We should work on the same .po file. It's not possible to upload it directly on the forum, so I'm waiting for an "official" place to do it... maybe on the subversion server ?
Very good idea !!! I am french speaking too. Even if working with Xara and creating tutorials was a good english language training for me I think the translation in other languages could open new diffusion areas to the program.
Of course the best would be making translations available as independent modules (and also for windows versions).
kindly,
ivan
Hi guys - thanks for your interest in doing a French version of LX!
As you've probably seen from the translation instructions on our web site, we've not perfected the translation process yet so it's useful to have feedback from you now. There's no way yet for you to upload your translated files so you can share the translation work. But I guess we need a mechanism like that so I'll try and get something in place in the next few days to help.
In the meantime, perhaps you can share a po file between you by just attaching it to posts in this forum? I'll let you know when we have a po upload mechanism.
Thanks
Neil
Xara
I didn't succeed to upload the .po file: I think the forum only allow quite a small range of filetype to be attached...
Did you try .zip files ?
Yep ! it works :)
How should we proceed to avoid overlapping ?
poedit says the file contains arround 18000 lines (for ~6000 strings).
Let's say I start working from line 1 to line 2000. So you can take some following section.
I've made some choices for the translation :
* I've tried to keep translations similar to Inkscape's french terms for similar concepts (or to Gimp's when it applied)
* I've done some propositions for special concepts like "QuickShape" :
QuickShape -> Forme automatique
Mould -> Moule (but "Mould tool" becomes "Déformer")
Quality -> Niveau de détail
Bevel -> Biseau/biseauter
I forget certainly a lot of them...But we have to keep a good homogeneity along the translation. Maybe we could put on a wiki a list of standard translations...
If no one else is allready started this work, I am planning on helping out with the translation to Norwegian Bokmål.
-trond-
Nobody is doing a Norwegian translation as far as I know, so feel free to start.
As far as the French translation work is concerned, it looks like there are 3 of you already working on it which is great!
We can't provide direct subversion access to everyone, so please can you submit your partially translated po files to the dev mail list. Find out how to subscribe to and email that mail list by going to www.xaraxtreme.org/community/. But first can you all check you're happy with our contributor agreement at www.xaraxtreme.org/contributor_agreement.html. The developers we've heard from so far don't seem to have any problems with it so hopefully you guys will be ok with it too. Then we'll be able to include your po file in the offical distribution of Xara LX.
As soon as you email in a po file (and as long as everyone that’s contributed to it has signed the agreement!) I'll check it into svn - so that's now the best way for you to share the work between multiple translators.
I'll look into how we can build and distribute these translated files with the main LX distribution so anyone downloading and trying it can try the French version.
I’ve just updated the translation process description at http://www.xaraxtreme.org/developers...nslations.html
Thanks
Neil
Thanks ! :)
Btw, I don't know if it's a bug, but almost all strings containing an '&' is duplicate : the first one contains '&', the second one '&'...It's quite annoying, and could maybe introduce divergent translations for the same message...
Can you give me an example of a string that's duplicated please?
There has just been an important change made to the message file. The problem with menu text (see bugzilla.xara.com/show_bug.cgi?id=906) has been fixed, but this required a change to the po file. In the po file you'll now see that menu strings are preceded by "&" instead of "&".
Please can you all download a new po file from www.xaraxtreme.org/downloads/XaraLX.po and merge with your translated versions. Then you will be able to translate menu text too.
Thanks
Neil
Some sample strings :
New >/New > (lines 11267 & 11273)
O&verlay/O&verlay (lines 11610 & 11613)
Outer &margin/Outer &margin (lines 11798 & 11801)
&Defaults/&:Defaults (lines 641 & 1232)
and... :o What's the best way to merge the 2 po files ?
I've shortly looked arround about translation process, and I think it would be easier if you could post the new .pot file to automaticaly update the current (already partially translated) .po file thanks poEdit.
Hello,
Rosetta is an online tool developped by the ubuntu team to help translating opensource softwares :
https://launchpad.ubuntu.com/rosetta
What about using it to simplify the translation work for XaraXL ?
P.S. : I'd be pleased to take part in the french translation ! :-)
Yes ! I used it once, it's nice. Neil, could you have a look at it ?
I've created a new product page for Xtreme on Launchpad.
https://launchpad.net/products/xtremelx
I'll uplaod the .pot file + the current french .po file as soon as possible.
Please do it asap.
The only thing I've translated for Xara 'til now is their presentation for the Linuxgraphics exhibition.
Theit soft is great.
I can't wait to be able to use it without having to boot windows to run it.
Ok, I'll look at that tool.
Just to confirm - you want us to automatically publish the lastest .pot file as well as the po file. Is that correct? If so I'll update the build to do this next week. I'm away for the next few days.
Thanks
Neil
Small update :
I've renamed the Launchpad project into xaralx, so it can now be found there : https://launchpad.net/products/xaralx
I've uploaded a .pot file built from the 0.4rev780. It's currently under reviewing by the Launchpad team, and should be online whitin the next few days.
I've also restarted the french translation with a freshly generated .po file : the one which in online on Xara website is already filled with the english strings, making it hard to know what is done, what is not. I can put online this new version, but I think it will be easier to upload it on Launchpad as soon as it get online.
Regards
Hi, I would like to translate Xara into Russian. Hope someone will join me, since the amount of work is too large for one man:)
Next week I want to start publishing translations (even unfinished ones) along with the Xara LX build that we put on the web site. So if any of you have a partially (or fully ;-) )translated po file (and you've signed our contributor agreement), can you send it to the commits mail list (see www.xaraxtreme.org/community/) and I'll include it.
Can someone confirm whether it's useful for us to provide the current pot file as well as the po file on our web site?
Thanks
Neil
In order to understand the status of the translation, current .po files should be available. Otherwise translators will duplicate what has already been done by someone else.
Hi everybody!
I started translating XaraLX to italian... am I the first one? I'd rather avoid to duplicate work...
However, I'll post my in-progress translation as soon as possible!
???
Rosetta/launchpad *is* a tool to help community translations.
To present it simply :
A sentence appears on the screen, you translate it, and you validate.
Then comes the next sentence : you translate it, and you validate...
Everything is online, the percentage progress is updated in real time.
Ten people can work on the same translation file, two persons won't get the same sentence to translate.
Wait until XaraXL has been accepted in the Rosetta (the tool is made available by the Linux Ubuntu Team), and start the translation only at this moment if you don't want to make duplicate work.
yes...
The .pot file is still waiting for reviewing, you can have a look here : https://launchpad.net/rosetta/import...EVIEW&type=pot
I had a look at the 'Waiting to be reviewed' .pot files applications listing in Rosetta, and it appears that Xara is on a quite long queue : about one hundred applications are before it to be reviewed.
The oldest one (the first in the queue) has been uploaded for review... at the end of february :-(
Has anybody here personal contacts at Ubuntu, in order to use them to speed things up ?
Yes it looks like Rosetta will be very useful. But we still have to control contributions to the offical source tree and that means it's not entirely straightforward, because we'll have to control who can make translation contributions via Rosetta. All contributors must sign our contributor agreement if the translations are to be included in the official Xara LX.
Hopefully we'll be able to do this by having a group that will allow us to control who has access to the project in Rosetta. Only people who've submitted a signed contributor agreement will be added to the group. Does that sound workable?
Skadge - are you ok to assign ownership of that 'Series' you created over to me?
Shame the queue is so long!
Neil
Yes, no prbl.
Have you already an account on Launchpad ? I need your login.
This stuff... this agreement to sign... I don't think it can really work for a long time in that way
Meanwhile, I've to send mine :)
XaraXL is now second in the queue ! :-)
Is it ok with the ownership transition ?
I am not sure I can give lots of time for the translations (I am no professional graphist, so there are tons of technical words for wich I doin't know the translation), but I could at least re-read the texts and proof the grammar.
Neil, let me know if you want me to sign anything.
Skadge - I've emailed you my launchpad account details.
Thanks
Neil
Ok, Neil is now the official maintainer.
By the way, the xaralx.pot file isn't anymore in Rosetta's import queue. It should has been ckecked in by the Ubuntu staff, but the translation framework is still not available in Rosetta, so...
Maybe we could send them a mail...? Neil ?
Thanks. Ok, I'll chase this with them.
Neil
Jordi Mallach, from the Launchpad team, has just sent me a mail to ask for confirmation before putting the translation framework online for Xara. So it should start soon now.
The template is online on Launchpad ! Let start the translation :)
Everything here : https://launchpad.net/products/xaralx/0.4/+pots/xaralx/
Tag2015 here, I'm working on the italian translation. Currently launchpad shows 100% completion rate of the italian translation because I upped my work-in-progress .po file that is based on the one Xara provided (fully in english, you know). So launchpad marks all the strings as translated even though the true completion rate is around 30-40% and the remaining is still in english. This is quite hard to work with, maybe i should restart from scratch?
One last thing - I don't know if I'll be online this weekend so don't get angry if I don't reply...
Cool.
I have started the french translation.
From now on, I'll translate about 20 items a day, which would theoritically make the whole avalilable in about 8 months at this rate... but I won't be alone on this task, will I ? ;)
As I wrote above, I am not a graphist at all myself, and there are technical terms I have no clue how to translate... could french graphists call for help on some of their specialized forums ?
Hint : in the Rosetta interface, dont forget to select 'untranslated' in the drop down menu if you want to 'jump' directly to the words and sentences that have not yet been translated :)
Important notice : the web page http://www.xaraxtreme.org/developers...nslations.html
isn't true anymore, and is misleading now that Rosetta is used for the translation.
I suggest to direct the people on this forum instead.
