Post Your Early Work Thread
I have been using Xara vector software for quite a few years now. I don't draw too much anymore. Must be an age thing. I thought it would be interesting to see where we all started. I hope other TG members will join me in posting some of their old work each day in this thread. I thought it would be an interesting stroll down memory lane. I think of some of the work from years ago that I would like to see again, and looking it all up would be a pain. So dig out those old drawings TG'ers and post them in this thread. I'm going to start off with the very first drawing I did with vector software. Now don't let me down, add your early work to this thread, I know you still have it.
The first drawing I did to learn Xara was a Jag, referenced from a photo.

Lost all of my old ones due to a computer crash. No, it wasn't backed up.
This is the oldest I think I can find. About 2004.

Great idea. Here's a collection of my early work that I submitted to Xara for their clipart library. My favorite was the traction engine. No longer have the original files :(

Good idea, Gray, thank you. I do remember this was inspired by an excellent tutorial that Gary did in 2000 (I think) on neon lighting but have no idea why I thought of the rest of the image! I think I could do the perspective better now.

It's so good to look back on old work from everyone. Sorry you lost it all. Ron.
Let's keep it going folks, there's lots more Xara work to show. It doesn't have to be old. If you've just started using Xara, post your early work here. Don't be bashful. If you've been lurking now is your chance to show us.
One of my favorite bikes growing up was a Norton Commando. I always seemed to own and drive BSA's, but I had a friend who owned several Norton's. This drawing I think was my first motorcycle in Xara. Must be around 12 years ago.

Nothing special, I was into tiling the plane with repeating and non-repeating (Penrose Tiles) patterns.
Attachment 121544 is an irregular hexagon pattern.

I don't do a lot of artwork but I enjoy using XDP for the occasional graphic. It's from 2007 and I can't remember what it was about.

Boy, clearly it is presciently appropriate to the Xara Online Content Catalogue and the Xara Cloud!

At the time I was looking to to get into vectors, starting with the simple vectors in Corel Painter.
I've worked a lot with Expression 3.3 and the acrylics beta but Xara had productive details which I liked compared to others I've tried..

Re: Post Your Early Work Thread
Thanks for adding everyone. It's loads of fun to look back at the beginnings of your Xara work. I don't know if it's my imagination but there seems to be less and less graphics sites displaying peoples work. It seems that there used to be many more postings at these sites.
So today I'm going to post either my first or second drawing of a plane. I was trying to learn texturing in Xara. Most objects have a particular texture to their surface and I wanted to see if I could duplicate that in vector. I used a reference pic to draw the Blackbird plane and the background and refueling probe were my own. I spent hours trying to get the surface texture of that plane just right. The second valuable lesson I learned was don't use reference photo's for your main subjects. On one site I got accused of not actually drawing this plane but using raster to vector translation software. Even when I showed him the line drawing, it still didn't matter. The accuser, calling me a liar, taught a graphics course at a college. So valuable lesson learned, don't use reference photo's for drawing your subject, always be original. Sorry I'm rambling. So here's the Blackbird drawing. Done many years ago.
So come on TG'ers, keep those drawings coming.

Eyes and worms. Recurring themes. The "eyebulb" was my personal logo for many years until I stopped looking for design projects. But I was always pleased with the chrome effect.

Re: Post Your Early Work Thread
It's not your imagination, Gray, there are many fewer postings of vector graphics work than previously. Most of the stuff I post is usually bitching about the MagiXara self-inflicted mess with their issues of unfair subscription methods. I'm not the only guilty one, though. I am trying to make amends in this thread, though.
Here is a simple vector of a long playing record, which I took into Photoshop to create a mockup. For a short time it was my avatar.

Great drawings peeps. I've always loved creating Celtic knots. Here's one from a few years back but unfortunately I can never leave things as is, I always have to "What if ...."

Egg, I remember your Celtic knots, they were great. I did this in about 2004, we moved house and I thought I'd paint it above the bathroom door, but of course never did - too busy playing with Xara.

What great looking work from everyone, there should be a permanent display of all this work. So much great art gets lost in time.
Out of season, but an old Christmas graphic.

"@Gray I don't remember that one." Larry, one Christmas a few years ago. Time flies by.
Drawing of an old Short Torpedo bomber which was part of a larger illustration that I later made to look like an old postcard.

I remember that old Short Torpedo bomber. I was mightily impressed by what you did with the postcard mockup then. I still am now.

A couple more oldies. I was experimenting mixing raster with vector to use the strengths of each graphic type. An old water bomber and a Norseman in RCAF colours. The Norseman is 100% vector with the background a mix of vector and raster. The water bomber is about 98% vector with the background a mix of both.
