Wings is getting to be fun! I did most of this piece in wings (except the box caps and the key latch), exported to Maya to texture, and then used RenderMan.
What a mixed media piece!

I'm glad to see you're finally starting to see the light of Wings3D, Gare http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif This is a cute image http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/smile.gif
But why didn't you do the box caps in Wings as well?
Dan Huff

I didn't know how to do a very thin extrude (the box caps were designed in Illustrator/XARA) with a bevel edge.
As you might say, "I'm not up to that page yet"!
And I just downloaded the demo of SILO and HOPE I can do something even remotely as sophisticated as Ivan has shown before my 40 uses are up!
My Best,
Gare
Hey right on Gare... looking very nice indeed...
boxtop in Wings... take cube, click mmb and rotate pulling the mouse down towards you slightly... select bottom face and "move> normal", moving your mouse to the left thus creating the rectangular shape, leaving this face still selected, choose "inset" and moving the mouse to the right, and go how far ya needs, then still leaving said face selected, choose "extrude" and move the mouse to the left and voila... one box top...
and, if ya wants that top to be proper for fit top like fx, choose "intrude" rather than extrude for the last command here...
oops, forgot bout the beveled edges, sorry http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/wink.gif
for bevel edge, when you get the shape worked out just choose the edges desired, right click and choose "bevel" , move mouse to the right and there ya have it http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/smile.gif
have fun http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif

I always like your "mise en scène", Gary.
I am also trying Wings these times and I like it a lot, even if I am most impressed by Silo.

I like the picture a lot. Reminds me of the days when I was a tiny rascal. It's peaceful... the hole world of a kid!

If you don't know how to dream you'll never be a designer.

...and if you want to do more exact editing you can always press the tab key after you select a command and enter a prefered value (i.e for move, intrude, bevel etc.)

Thanks for the info Gidget and Paul, and thanks for the kind words about the piece, folks.
Isn't there also another way to do the caps: boolean subtract a cube from another cube slightly offset in space, then boolean subtract the pattern...and then do the bevel?
I'm a tryin', I'm a tryin' http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif

Hi Gary,
I really like the way you view and portray the world. I always learn something from every image you post. You've taken a childhood memory and made it immortal in a graphic image.
Thank You.
Soquili
haha, no Gary, no bools in Wings... http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif
though thinking about it, doing the bool subtraction route would probably be a couple of more moves in getting the second box positioned, not to mention having to create the second box it's self... yadayada... I thinx that simply boxing this box top out is the much easier of the two methods... http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/smile.gif
You can very well design different parts in Xara X and use them in Wings 3D. Just export from Xara X in Adobe Illustrator format and then select File > Import > Adobe Illustrator (.ai) (click on the small box to set the number of edge bisections). The attached pic is done in that way in Xara X / Wings 3D (even rendered in Wings http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/smile.gif )
-Paul
TIP! Try to keep the object you make in Xara X simple = try keep the amount of nodes low, to avoid "cluttered" imports in Wings, meaning you probably have to clean up and recreate edges in a better way.
Thanks, Paul...
Truth be known, I like designing paths better in XARA X than in native modeling apps.
BTW, you notice the filagree work I did on the caps? Are you saying that this sort of stuff is too complex to extrude in Wings? Too many sub-paths.
Gidge, thanks for the advice, too. No bools, eh? I'm not that far into Wings to notice. Damn!
Soquili--I'm a kid at heart, and obviously my work reflects this! ! !
My Best,
Gare
Hey don't worry Gare, it is me a fault here... I thought you was talking bout the box lid not the corners... hahaha... duh... hey both you guys have a working plan for this and all looks really cool... no crits or suggestins here eh, as this is thinking outside of the box http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif
How bout a tut on this guys? Showing everything from Xara to bools, to texturing... this would be fantastic [thumbs up]

First, when you import an ai-file to Wings it will be automatically extruded, and all you have to do is to resize.
Second, the "problem" is that the nodes will be connected in quite a cluttered way (you try it and you'll see what I mean). This clutter is easier to clean up if you have fewer nodes. And I find the clutter bad when I try to use edge loops.
But on the other hand, if you intend to do no editing on the imported object there will hardly be any problems. So to conclude - it's not the amount of nodes/subpaths, but how the nodes are connected that is the (my) problem.

...about exporting from Xara X to Wings 3D. Nothing fancy but I hope it will give you some ideas and inspiration.
-Paul
The wings in Wings (http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/smile.gif) look a bit funny (more like bat wings instead of bird wings) and that is because I did the bird in Xara X with the freehand tool, and the lines became too smooth (= too few nodes).
Hey hey, right on Paul... now this be some inspiration indeed... imagine boxing out something not starting from a cube... http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif
thnx http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/smile.gif
Thanks for the mini-tut, Paul...I'm sure Gidge will dig this, too.
OK, now I see that I should not skimp on the anchor points (nodes) to preserve a XARA shape.
My Best,
Gare
