Create a caricature or likeness of yourself
The purpose of this challenge is to create an opportunity to practice and learn to draw a funny caricature or close likeness of yourself using vector drawing tools only.
Seeing other people post their efforts should motivate and encourage those who perhaps thought their work wasn't good enough to show.
Remember this is a fun Challenge and is about participation. Everyone is welcome, there will be no winners or losers, just participants showing their own work.
Any vector illustration application can be used, though Xara Xtreme is obviously preferred.
But no LE's, third party filters/plugins, no bitmap fills or pixel tools at all and definately no software tracing programs. This must be by hand.
Using a graphics tablet or mouse it is possible to quickly rough-out a sketch when using a photo as a base referrence image.
This is also an opportunity for those members who preferred not to post a real photograph in the 'Portrait of TG' thread. Now you can represent your likeness via a caricature or as a close likeness.
TalkGraphics has a number of fine cartoonist members who should find this challenge interesting and easy to join in with.
Please keep your description brief (see below), any lengthly discussion about a submission from participating and non-participating members should be avoided or taken to one of the general forums where a new thread can be opened in order to discusses that particular piece of work, techniques used, tips and so on..
Anyone can enter this challenge, though please limit it to a maximum of two submissions.
One final note, please attach your image to you post - posts with hot-linked images to external hosts will be removed.
If you don't know how, please review Eggs tutorial here.
--------------------------------------
My example took about 20 minutes.
My workflow was simple.
1) Import photo to layer 1 - lock layer
2) Create new layer and sketch-in the details.
3) Select all lines and set them to 2pix and 'Blip' profile.
4) Group all lines
5) Colorise using a vector brush, put color to back..

Re: Create a caricature or likeness of yourself
I spent a couple of hours on this. I think this is the first photo of me that I vectorized. Done in Expression 3, which is a little faster for me. What you see is what you get.

Re: Create a caricature or likeness of yourself
I did the likeness ;now here is another caricature of a little kid, not mine. This one was done in SerifDraw Plus X2. A photo was the base and I made my outlines and filled them in. Couple hours on this one two. Sometimes I shade and sometimes I don't.

Re: Create a caricature or likeness of yourself
@Tim - Excellent simplicity and lines. Without seeing a photo of your natural appearance I could not tell if this were a likeness or a caricature though :)
@Frances - Very good likeness and you've definately captured 'yourself'.
@ Geogetroy - Very well done for your first try, noses and lips can be difficult, often I find that 'less is more'.
Your second submission, though very nicely done, is neither you nor it is all vector (there is a bitmap background) so doesn't quite fit in this topic's guidelines.
------------------
Here's my second and final submission.
This is the comic version referenced from the same photograph as the 'likeness' vector sketch in post#1.
I tried to exaggerate some of the features and then simplify lines.
I'm no expert but I was pleased with the result.

Very skillfully sketched Suvek. http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/icons/icon14.gif
Though the paper background suits it well, the use of a bitmap fills means it is not all vector as mentioned in the op.

Re: Create a caricature or likeness of yourself
haha, well my first one, because I'm always looking down reading (school)
I think I need lots of practice. Drawing that is, not reading. :)

Re: Create a caricature or likeness of yourself
Well done for first effort. We all need to keep up with practise, even skilled portrait artists and cartoonists would not like to loose their skills to complacency.
Could you describe your workflow when drawing your submission?

Workflow? I think I can..
I used a photograph as my guide (always reading so not many choices.) :)
Then I made a series of ellipses sans lines and try to match the shade from te photo and shape of my photographed head. I did the same with the lips, chin and scalp.
It was the detail of eyelashes, nose and mouth I gave up on. Not quite skilled enough to do those, so I just traced them and used the shading (eyedropper) from the photo. The hair, well...I hadn't a clue so I just used lines. :)

Well ... errmmm ... give me another 20 years I'll get the hang of it :p
-
Re: Create a caricature or likeness of yourself
I can see why you blend in with football crowds so easily John ;)
Thanks for having a shot and I'm sure you'd need less than 20 years to improve your drawing techniques.
Do you have a graphics tablet?
-
Re: Create a caricature or likeness of yourself
A shot! It's practically a photo :D :o
Yeah, I've got a Bamboo but I'm struggling with it. Thought it would be better than the mouse. Determined though :)
-
Re: Create a caricature or likeness of yourself
I used a bamboo for both my submissions. The second I also used a mouse.
-
Re: Create a caricature or likeness of yourself
With me, it's a matter of concentration and focus - things I'm also struggling with recently - but I'm sure the Tablet is the way ... liked your example in post #1
Practice and perseverance. Think I'll find some other model than myself for now though ;)
-
Re: Create a caricature or likeness of yourself
Well, if that's a likeness, John, I'm surprised I didn't pick you out near Bill Shankly. You'd certainly stand out in a crowd. :D
Saludos,
Bob.

Well I had a go, and I figured that if I couldn't do a good caricature, then I'd
just do something wierd.
Well I couldn't so here is wierd.
TimS I really like your caricature.

Re: Create a caricature or likeness of yourself
Thanks, Steve, great idea and love your own caricature. I've been wanting to make one of myself for some time now, but didn't know how to do it simply. Your directions worked great.
I followed them to the T, except did not use vector brushes to colorize, simply used flat fills.
I used a mouse only (don't have a tablet) and added no shading, though might do that at a later date.
While this wasn't hard at all, and quite fun, I don't see how to do the next step - to draw my own caricature in different positions. "Tracing" the photo let me know where lines should go, drawing in different positions/actions would mean I would have to know where those lines should go, on my own - like the lines of facial expressions or fabric folds - and this is where I would be lost.

Re: Create a caricature or likeness of yourself
Larry your drawing turned out well. Your colour choice reminded me of an old move "The Boy with Green Hair". :)
Bob very good drawing. Knowing where to put the lines isn't always easy. ;) A very good book is titled "Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain" and is available at amazon.com for $10.94 USD.

Cheers, from one Tangoed individual to another ...
Here's a variation.
-
Re: Create a caricature or likeness of yourself
Sledger: yours was rather impressive.....(as were all the others too)
so the whole idea of this is to draw with the drawing tools directly without art ETC.......
NOt an idea i would normally entertain... ((although i did used to do that a bit as a kid on my amiga500 when a scanner was like star trek technology) i wish i had that old work now...)
I,ll give this a try when i get back from holidays....not before i pick up my wacom tablet when im in melbourne....although im not a big fan of the wacom tablet i get a feeling it would be very handy for this exercise....
did you use a mouse? to do that preliminary "contour map" ........

I used a Wacom Bamboo tablet and pen with the freehand tool for the first 'sketch' drawing in post #1
In post #7 I used a mouse and the shape editor tool.

Since you ask David:
I used a freehand pen tool and wacom tablet
I did not sketch over a photo I just looked in the mirror frequently to keep reminding myself what I look like. I did it in one take, which is why it's a bit rough and ready and the expression a calculating one ;)
Incidentally a mirror is an artist's and particularly a cartoonist's friend - all the best expressions are to be found there if you look for them
I am inclined to call this art myself, but it is open to interpretation

Re: Create a caricature or likeness of yourself
Thanks Sledger and Larry! As a cartoonist, I have been doing this same pic of myself for quite some time. The basic face shape and smile were something I picked up from Mort Drucker, the famous MAD magazine cartoonist, of a caricature he once did of Dick Van Dyke. Never forgot it.
Here's a portrait I did before carefully reading this thread and seeing that submissions were to be caricatures. I personally prefer the cartoon :)
-
Re: Create a caricature or likeness of yourself
Another cool drawing Zeb ;)
I used the word 'Caricature' to mean just the type of thing you posted first.
The word is open to interpretation I agree:
caricature - A picture where the subject is depicted in a satirizing way that exaggerates its distinctive characteristics in a comical or grotesque way. Often used as a commentary on political or social matters.
