I thought I'd try my hand at a classic 3D subject, a chessboard and some chesspieces, and see how far I could get in Xara3D. I'm quite pleased with the result so far, and it can be given a gentle swing animation, though the resulting file size is a bit hefty, because the image doesn't reduce well. I'll play with that a bit further before I consider posting it. Meanwhile, here is the static gif.

and some further work on it. I'm not really happy with the queen yet, so I'll revisit it, and then tackle a bishop, so to speak. I have also just noticed an error in the text round the rim, gosh-darn-it-all-to-heck!

is progress of a sort. Bishop and I agreed to differ, as I can't think of a better approach for the time being. I'll come back to it later.
Applied wood textures to the pieces, but of course you can only see it properly on the top surfaces of each piece, but it is probably still an improvement on flat colours. First attempt had the black pieces looking as if they were made of rich chocolate!
I found lighting the thing to be actually quite hard, and I don't pretend to have got it right yet, and would appreciate some advice on that if anyone has any, or on any part of it actually.
Meanwhile, here is the current image.

...at least for now. Adjusted textures and tinting for various objects, re-organised the component parts so that all the white pieces can be selected in one group, as can all the black pieces, generally tidied up, and found a lighting arrangement I like. It's a pity that the shadow tool only throws its shadow onto the background, and not onto the objects themselves, which I think would have helped, but I'm quite pleased with this now.
Hawkeyes among you may have noticed the lack of a knight, but I haven't really worked out how to create one yet. The bishop gave me a lot of trouble, and I eventually ended up compromising with what is there now. The knight is a problem for another day http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/smile.gif

After I posted the last image, I decided the pawns were too large, so I reduced them.
