I think you've got hat hang-ups. Forget the hat for now. Click on the red line you've converted to a shape and sent to the back and shift-click anywhere you see the thin black outline around the pirate. Make sure you have both (two objects) selected before performing the Combine Shapes > Add Shapes operation. It may work the way your trying, but I KNOW it works they way I did it. ;-)

Finished, but the lines should be black. And I had a few problems using the transparency tool in the binoculars. Thers a lot to learn yet

Bang up job!
Click on your outline and remove the line on your outline then single click on the black (not gray) color on the color line to make the back image black.

Harry when I click in the outline I only see "delete shape" not outline.
