great, looking forward to getting it :D
I had exactly the same issue with no thumbnails displaying after installing Designer Pro and I'm running Windows 7 32bit.
I think what is happening for the people who have it working is that they have other Xara products installed. If you uninstall all Xara products and then install DP 6 there are no thumbnails.
Fortunately the fix is very easy.
The XarThumb.dll file appears to have moved location from previous versions and is not being registered properly on installation.
Enter
regsvr32 "c:\program files\xara\xara_designer_pro_6\xaradlls\xarthumb.d ll"
in the Run box on the start menu or from a command shell and all will be well.
Not sure why a space keeps appearing in the dll above but it shouldn't be there.
Here's what to type for Windows 7 64-bit:
regsvr32 "C:\Program Files (x86)\Xara\Xara_Designer_Pro_6\XaraDLLs\XarThumb64 .dll" (remove space between 64 and .dll)
Received mine yesterday in France :)
Just went out to the mail box, and guess what, ;)) =D>  It was here :D
The PGD6 CDs arrived yesterday, the DP6 CDs arrived today. :D
I received my PGD6 discs as well. However, I have had a very bid disappointment. I tried installing them on my laptop where I had previously had the trial version of PD6 installed. It seemed like the installation went pretty good. But, then when I started the application, it loaded the last xar file I had worked on and immeditaley gave me an error stating that there was an exception with Microsoft Visual C++. When I clicked to close the message box, the application immediately closed down. There did not seem to be any other alternative.
I then tried both repairing as well as uninstalling and reinstalling the software and still get the same results. It appears that the application starts fine but when it encounters the previous xar file, it returns the error. There does not seem to be a way to get it to start without loading the previous xar file.
When I get home tonight (the software is on my personal laptop, not my work one). I think I will go delete the xar file that is loading and see if that helps.
Does anyone have any other ideas?
:-O
Did you uninstall the trial version before installing from the CD?
It appears that the trial was not successfully removed before the CD version was installed. Some registry settings seem to be held over from the trial.
I have also posted on the Runtime Error thread. I am beginning to believe this may be more of a Vista problem than anything else.
Yes, I forgot to mention that I was running Vista.
Well, at first I just installed, then I did an uninstall, then I reinstalled after the uninstall.
Do you have any add on software that may be preventing updates to the registry?
Your Antivirus, or other security software?
I do not think so.
I am very suspecious that the problem is Vista since I see that others have reported similar problems.
As I said before, when I get home tonight, I am going to try installing on my other machine which is running XP and see if I get the same problem. My gut feel is that I will not. :-(
Everyone can have their computer configured differently.
I personally have installed both XDP6 and XP&D6 on my Vista machine without any issues.
You may want to open a ticket with Xara support. http://support.xara.com
I noticed that the problems seem to be with the trial version. If you purchased XDP6 and downloaded it and redownloaded the 6.1.1 do you still have to delete it and download the CD or can you keep what you have in the 6.1.1 ? :o
Hi Merv,
Installing from the CD will detect the download version and remove it before continuing with the install.
Thanks Bill, I appreciate the quick response. Now I wont worry about it. :D
I am on my 5th try to get the software to run on my laptop. I am uninstalling for the 4th time. I also uninstalled a bunch of Microsoft software (Visusl Studio, Visual C++ and some others).
I was able to install and run without any problems on Windows XP.
BTW: I notice that there were no "live effects" installed. I thought there were some free ones that would get installed. Where can I get those?
Good News............
I got the software running on Vista WITHOUT the runtime errors. I am not sure exactly which step solved the problem but I deleted some Microsoft Visual C++ modules, a bunch of Visural Studio modules, and some SQL Server stuff that I am not using. Then I uninstalled XGDP6 one more time. This time however, I rebooted the machine before reinstalling the software. This time it is running smoothly. I did notice that the file it was trying to load before also got deleted (must have been in a Xara folder that got delted). After all of this it is finally running smoothly.
I appreciate eveyone's input. I do suggest uninstalling the trial version and then rebooting your machine before installing from the CD.
I'm waiting, not too patiently.
Wednesday morning I purchased an upgrade to Xara Designer Pro 6. It said I would receive an email telling me how to download it, how to register it, etc.
I still haven't received any such email. Yesterday afternoon I searched and searched for information about how to inquire about my order, but I couldn't find anything, so I went to SUPPORT and opened a ticket. I received confirmation of the ticket, along with the ticket number almost immediately. I was sure I'd get some help by this morning, but so far, nothing.
Maybe someone here can tell me how to get some results.
I have Vista and had no problems installing. My installation has the live effects, I think you have to have a drawing up and an area selected first, then go to the live effects tool, then click "new", and it should show the demos.
That is what I thought I did but the drop down list of effects was empty. I will try again over the weekend.
Thanks for the reply.
Did you look at the bottom of the drop down menu when you clicked on new? It should look like this, and the effects (Alien Skin" and "Eye Candy" should be listed with others. I hope this helps, I'm just learning so I may be way off base. :o
Hi Charlie,
Do you have a SPAM or JUNK filter for your email?
Look in there..
Hi Sledger,
Nope. Not Spam or Junk. But thanks for the reply. I'm still waiting.
Charlie
Silly user error :)
Thanks for the reply.......
Your welcome, I'm just learning this fantastic program:D I'm glad I could help
I must admit I quite like the dark grey interface ... but perhaps that's because it's different and for moment, novel. However, in going for something more funky looking, Xara has gone for clunky! Unlike in the light grey version, you cannot decrease the size of the control bar buttons so as to increase the size of the drawing window! How bizarre!
[I realise that some users may prefer the larger buttons but I cannot think why the option to resize them hasn't come across with the new UI!]
Users of the new Xara Designer Pro 6 can access the old skin by pressing CTRL+ALT+SHIFT+S [it's a toggle function].
Like many who subscribe to these forums, I'm a hardened user of Xara ... but I've bought three iterations of this software in fairly quick succession now ... and have been slightly disappointed each time that functionality is not vastly different. In an education world where budgets are tight, this is an issue. Whilst the interface might please some, I'm hoping to see improved functionality in this and subsequent versions ... more live effects please [a good example!] ...

I was pretty frustrated at this point. Then Sledger responded.
Finally yesterday I received an email saying that in fact I had ordered the upgrade, and it included the serial number, so I downloaded and installed it, using the serial number to register it. Good, huh?
Later in the day the CDs arrived in the mail. I installed it this morning and it's up and running. Great! I like it.
BTW, is the paper manual orderable?
Yes it is:
Top right.
Or since you're in California .... http://www.xara.com/us/store/ .... Top right.
I just upgraded to DP6.
I put my keys in at start up, updated the program.
Then went to help/download templates.
And I keep being directed to the xara.com to purchase it.....I thought I did purchase it.!? Isn't the program supposed to fetch the templates after I buy?
Any ideas? Yes I started a support ticket. But it takes them days to answer you. Thought someone might have an idea as to what I should do.
Any and all suggestions are greatly appreciated.
Steve
Let me add this also, I own the template 1 pack from xara. And when I try to install that. it only shows xTreme5 & WD and NOT DP6. ???? somethings not right. do I need or have to uninstall the other two? surely not.
Must have been a bad install.
After a clean uninstall and reinstall all is good now. Thank You

Don't know if this belongs here, but what the heck, I'm sure one of the many helpful people here will answer my question. I have XP5, want to upgrade (online) but also want to order the manual, how do I go about both?
Sledger or one of the other moderators might know for sure, but I think you'll have to order those seperate.
I just upgraded yesterday and I do not remember seeing them together. I know that it's listed. Hope I'm wrong and Sledger will correct me. Be patient, they come through at least once twice a day on Sundays.
Hope this helps some.
actually if you upgrade from Xara Extreme 5 NOT PRO you DO get the manual. I have it in my hot little hands from upgrading from Xtreme 5 to Xara Designer Pro 6.
Cheers
Hi Folks,
I originally voted for the old GUI when there was a poll for it. I have to say that I've kind of gotten accustomed to the darker GUI after using it that way for a while. I still have a lot of trouble find the slide in the scroll bars but with a little hunt and peck I usually get it. If I was a commercial artist/designer, I would be upset because it does take time when you can't find the bar. Perhaps in the next upgrade that will be addressed as it seems to be the no. 1 concern with the gui.....
Otherwise, I'm starting to get used to it, not necessarily liking it that much yet.
