Amen. It is very difficult to design a software program that does one thing well let alone a dozen things well. For example, I would much rather have Xtreme be an excellent drawing program rather than a pretty good drawing program and a mediocre bitmap editor and a mediocre page layout program and a mediocre animation program.
I wish more projects/companies would stop trying to be all things to all people and focus on doing one thing really really well. Combine that with good support for moving my data around so that I can choose the best tool for the job and I'm a happy camper. I'm sure most companies dream of having a vertically integrated product stack just like Adobe but lets face it most of them don't have the resources to pull it off.
-
Re: Xara Xtreme Pro announced
I pretty much agree Jed, it can be damn frustrating when you have two programs each excellent at specific jobs, but with incompatable file types.
I've given up trying to get files from Sketchup to Xara and export huge bitmaps to Photoshop then reduce them instead, still not ideal, but we do what we must LOL!
Ben, thanks for your suggestion, I think I've tried most Macro programs out there and they are still clunky and over-complicated (not to mention a pain -especially mouse recorders) compared to Adobes Actions.
I'm teetering on the edge of buying Mangastudio ex (I'm reluctant to pay Adobes extortionate prices for Illustrator). Mangastudio would seem to many here to be the perfect example of 'bloatware'. Personally I see it as having more of the tools I want than any other program (including Actions!), still not perfect LOL!, but along with my trusty old Pshop7, I reckon it'll do most of what I want.

So that each user buys and 'plugs in' the various componants they need and want (before any puts me straight - I don't want an explaination of why that 'can't be done').
But you know, the guy from Seattle isn't able to realize his visions up to now. Or he is not interested anymore.

I think it's no big problem at all: There will be two versions of Xara Xtreme in the future - a $79,- version and a $199,- version. And I think, there will be also a update with some enhancements for the $79,- version in the future.

For any pro, just one of the major new features will save the cost over a month or two. Unless you are on a silly daily rate!
I agree with this. If you need some of the functions of the professional version, go for it - otherwise be patient and wait for a update of the $79,- version and there is also a third option: The open source version for Linux. (btw: In my eyes, Apple users are able to pay a little bit for a Mac OS X version. :p )

I agree with you. If you're looking at the new enhanced text functions within Xtreme Pro, you're able to see, that implementing some new functions into a excellent piece of software is a time-consuming process. And personally I don't need new animation functions in a professional version. But on the other side, I would love to use my favorite graphics editor as a DTP program and other users would love to use Xara Xtreme as a enhanced animation tool. Therefore I'm satisfied with the new Professional version so far. I'm willing to pay the upgrade price and if the developers are able to produce a additional Update of Xtreme Professional in 5-6 months again, I'm willing to give them my money again.

Re: Xara Xtreme Pro announced
I think it boils down to this.
If you are a hobbyist and can afford Xtreme Pro, terrific.
But if you are a serious design professional, and by this I mean you earn your living doing design, then you invest in the best programs/tools that help you do your job. If Xtreme does the things you need and you have no other needs, terrific. If there are things that Xtreme does not do, then supplement Xtreme with other applications. If you are any good as a design professional, Xtreme, Adobe CS2, Quark 7, and all the rest of your design tool investments, will pay for themselves in no time.
There seems to be a lot of hot air being blown off in this topic that comes under the general category of duh-uh. Know what I mean?

Re: Xara Xtreme Pro announced
That isn't the point Gary, what you say is common sense, we all know this.
I think to be honest we have strayed from the thread topic into a more general discussion of 'if only they would...' etc.
The point is; no piece of software is going to satisfy everyones needs and trying to use combinations (I use five programs for art - the bare minimum I can get it down too) can be problematical, with issues like file imcompatabilities for instance.
There can never be a 'perfect' piece of software, so we all get along with what we have.
I know there are probably unavoidable and complicated technical (and financial) reasons why no one makes a modular style software that users can 'build' into their own customised program and I know such a thing would still not be perfect, but we can dream.
-
Re: Xara Xtreme Pro announced
The journey is what counts and Xara Xtreme and Pro are the tools that I prefer to travel with.
There is indeed a lot of hot air in this thread; both about the price and the features of Pro.
It seems obvious that some users really do not buy much software. An upgrade for $120 or the full Pro for $200? Cheap as chips if you can use the feature set. If not, why worry about it.
Anyone priced other Pro level software tools lately for other categories such as digital audio?
There will always be features that you personally want but are not included. All you can do is either get the upgrade or don't buy it. The rest is just idle gossip, Monday morning water cooler talk!
Hint:The present version of Xtreme doesn't stop working just because the Pro version was announced. Keep using it if that's what your circumstances dictate.
Duh-uh indeed Gary! :-)

Re: Xara Xtreme Pro announced
Wow, some of you guys could take the fun out of a lottery win !
All of my requests over the years have so far been included in later vers, for that many thanks.
Charles, any chance that special blend feature is or will be included ?
and if .jpg can now work in Outlook, does that mean that .png will too, that would be really cool as I use .png for PowerPoint presentations and have sometimes needed to include the same elements in Outlook ?
Also, if the naysayers would caste their collective minds back to when Extreme was launched without Pantone - mention was made that a sep. ver. would in the future include that as some users did use Pantone, although many didn't. Pantone is expensive to include.
Gary, thanks as always for showing us the fun features so soon !

I’m enthusiastically downloading Xara Pro now and am looking forward to some of the new features. However, I didn’t notice a spell checker on your list. I use lots of text in Xara and think it would be a great idea. Did I miss it, or did you?
Thanks

Re: Xara Xtreme Pro announced
For 199,- this is still (by far) a great price compared to anything else out there. This is a no brainer. Thank you team Xara!
Some things that jump in my mind when thinking of working on a multi-page document using alot of bitmaps (like a catalog!):
-I miss this feature for ages: Replace existing images in the bitmap Gallery with another image (right click, replace image (file browser opens)).
-Assign a alias name for any bitmap in the Bitmap gallery, by default its the filename. You could also search for these aliases, as soon there is a letter in the search box it displays all bitmaps containing this letter.
-Make SubFolders in the Bitmap Gallery to categorize pictures.
-Decide if a picture in the bitmap gallery is linked to a file on the harddisk instead of beeing embedded. This way you can just change it in your favourite picture editor, save it again and its already embedded.
-Modify and replace an existing image in the Bitmap gallery using Xara's Picture Editor (and not inserting a new image after it has been modified).
-Click a thumbnail icon next to the picture in the bitmap gallery to view it as a 128x128 pixel thumbnail for the entire document.
-Collect Bitmaps: Creates automatically a Root Folder on your Harddisk containing all images used in the Bitmap Gallery, for bitmaps located on different locations on your harddisks. Sub-folders are created on your Harddisk named the same way SubFolders have been created in the Bitmap gallery.
-Auto-Name Colors (A very cool feature in Adobe After effects). Editing a color in the Color editor, it automatically names the color in realtime, for e.g. #5C86FE="Medium Royal Blue", #FEA45C="Medium Orange".
-Spell Checker: A button called 'spell checker' opens a new floating window with all the words unkown (in red) with 3 previous words before and after the wrong wpelt word used in the document, for example "...proofing and expert cstomer service whether..." (the word cstmer is red and can be edited inside the window) . A click of the word jumps to the page or position in the document where the word has been used. It can be edited manually inside the document or inside the flaoting window - whatever you prefer. I find it much more useful to get an overview of all mispelled words overall in the document than jumping from word to word anywhere in the document.

Re: Xara Xtreme Pro announced
After coming back from a long vacation this is warm welcomed news! I think this features especially the PSD import/export, Pantone and enhanced text is very welcome.
Must buy!
EDIT: downloaded and installed the BETA, One thing I think missing is to set the antialias level of text.
I want crisp clear text (for example for a website menu layout) and put the antialiasing off. (or like in photoshop, you can set the antialias to none, crisp, smooth, etc.) I think this is essential feature and must not be that hard to implementate. So please xara I think a lot of users will find this a very helpfull feature!
Great XARA go on!
-
Re: Xara Xtreme Pro announced
I am very happy to see this, I can not wait for the release. Getting the demo now. Man I sure hope this Pro runs as good a Xtreme standard.

I have anwered this point (text anti-aliasing) in another thread, since it's likely to be seen by more people.

Xara Xtreme Pro sounds great!
Although I don't really need it, I guess I'll have to buy it anyway because it looks like most of the posts in Talk Graphics are going to be about Pro, and Talk Graphics is the first place I go every morning after looking at my email.

Re: Xara Xtreme Pro announced
I have found some Color Naming Tables on the web.
This textfile (rgb.txt) could be loaded on startup by xara, so anyone can add or rename colors to their individual linking by editing the text file. These naming conventions can be used when editing colors in the color palette to 'autorename' colors. A default name (this naming convention) is offered in a textbox in the color editor, but you can always overwrite it with your own desired name.

Re: Xara Xtreme Pro announced
Is there still more to do on the PSD import/export feature? I tried the import part of it last night and the file imported, but the text was messed up and the gradients I had were not gradients. I know this is still a beta, but I am just curious about this feature. I still plan on getting this when it comes out.

Re: Xara Xtreme Pro announced
I finally did this mockup of an image to explain how auto naming colors could work. I got the idea from Adobe After Effects and I find it really helpful. Additionally, colors discribed in rgb.txt will get their name from the list.
What do you think?

Re: Xara Xtreme Pro announced
Putting it in context:
Upgrade to Xtreme Pro -- $120 (= $10/month for one year, and free from then on)
One-day workshop in anything -- $175 +
Hard cover university textbook -- $100 - $200
Adobe Illustrator upgrade -- $170
Five new "read 'em once" soft cover books -- $100 +
Four new movies on DVD -- $100 +
Four to eight new music CD's -- $120
High Speed internet connection -- $30/month
Cell phone use -- $25 - $80/month
A night out for two -- $50 (cheap dinner and a movie) - $300 +
One hour with a therapist -- $90 - $200
One hour with a lawyer -- your first born
There's no such thing as a free lunch (and there are much worse things to complain about in this world). Xara has overhead and growth costs for their progressive product. I do not begrudge them the expense of their new version, which includes an impressive array of long-awaited features from the request lists on this forum.

Re: Xara Xtreme Pro announced
Lets say you are a full time graphic designer and Xara is one
of your main tools. And let's assume you make $40.000 per year.
You paid for Xara PRO $199.
--- thats 0.49% per year of your income - less than 1 percent! ---
CS2 full version including 5 Applications (AI PSD PDF INDD GOLIVE)
is about $1750,
--- that's 4.37% of your income, about 0,87% per application---
Overview:
0.49% of your income for XaraPro
4.37% of your income for Adobe CS2
(taken from another thread)

Re: Xara Xtreme Pro announced
To be honest I put Adobe products at the bottom of my shopping list, not because I can't afford them, but because I believe they are profiteering and I don't want to reward that kind of practice.
$199 seems very reasonable to me (especially if pro is more stable!), but I wont be buying because pro doesn't suit my needs as well as other software does.
When you see a piece of software that is so good, but is lacking one big ingredient (from a personal point of view) it is very tempting to just demand the things you want are added. Of course that is not the way things work, so we bite the bullet and take second best.
I've looked at lots of software and despite all it's faults and my own feelings about Adobe, I'm going to have to go with Illustrator for my next buy.

Re: Xara Xtreme Pro announced
Number one for me has got to be actions, I really like the live paint feature too, but that could be 'emulated' (kind of) in Xara with work arounds.
I have built my workflow around actions and it would be a tremendous change and step backwards for me to try and do without them. I use Actions to set up workspaces for various tasks, format complex custom templates (I often need to switch several layers between different formats too -something else I use actions for), carrying out complex photoshop techniques with a single click, speed up the boring and repetitive stuff that comes with most jobs and generally save time.
After playing with Xtreme and studying many tutorials I can see A; what a wonderful piece of software this is (too many crashes, but that seems to be something that may be fixed), I really do like it and B; many of the tools techniques (like flood fill or masking, for instance) I am looking for can be emulated with work arounds in Xtreme, which would be fine if those work arounds and various other often used and repetitive tasks could be automated.
Call me lazy, call me spoiled, but I go with whatever will do the job my way, as easily as possible.

Re: Xara Xtreme Pro announced
Xara Xtreme Pro moves into the domain of replacing Illustrator and InDesign. Congratulations for moving in that direction, and at a price with which you can still move ahead with even more enhancements. Thank you.

Re: Xara Xtreme Pro announced
Okay I have to put my two cents in(sorry, maybe more than two cents) and I really hope that Xara reads this one because what I have to say is about the bottom line (sales). Fans of Xtreme in this forum, if you really want to help this product succeed, you won't be so quick to discount the complaints about price. Consider this, Adobe's Creative Suite (full version) goes for $899 while Corel Draw Graphics Suite is far less at $379. Now you can argue feature set and it's a little like comparing apples and oranges, but the most significant reason for the price difference is that Corel understands it's current position in the marketplace. They need to broaden their customer base and they know their profits will be greater selling more units at the lower price. Granted, I don't know how Xtreme is doing worldwide, but here in the States far too many digital artists (pro or hobbyists) have never even heard of Xara. And that's a problem. I would speculate that Xtreme (as nifty as it is) is not yet in the same market position as Corel Draw or even where Macromedia Freehand was. Xtreme (regardless of speed, clean interface, fabulous handling of variable trans. etc.) is out there with Serif DrawPlus($100), Intaglio($89), Zone Draw 5($50), PhotoLine 32 (59 Euro) and the like( Don't get upset Xtreme fans, I'm just talking about position in the marketplace, not quality). So I think Xara was wise to price Xtreme the way they did. Good pricing isn't just about feature set, or even ease of use. $79 has a very pronounced WOW factor when you see what the program can do. You need that WOW factor to grab the attention of strangers, get them to not only buy the product but tell their friends about it. Word of mouth is extremely important for a product like Xtreme (no pun intended) and no less so for Xtreme Pro.
Argueing the actual dollar value of Xtreme Pro features, comparing the cost of upgrading to Xtreme Pro over Illustrator, or calculating the cost per day if you had Xtreme for a year is missing the big picture. Here's what I mean: If you have a labeled price for a bucket of perfect delicious apples, you don't expect to pay more than twice the price to have a few more delicious apples added to the bucket. Call it Pro or an upgrade and argue the expense of implementing the new features all you want, it won't change this perception for the average consumer(Pro or non Pro). Adobe knows this. So does Corel and a lot of other pro level software makers. To see what I mean, compare the % value of their Upgrade price to the full price item:
Adobe Creative Suite - $899, Upgrade $349 = 38.8%
Illustrator CS2 $499, Upgrade $169 = 33.8%
Freehand MX - $399, Upgrade $99 = 24.8%
Corel Draw Graphics Suite - $379, Upgrade $169 = 44.5%
Photoshop - $649, Upgrade $169 = 26%
Carrara 5 - $249 Upgrade $99 = 39.7%
In all cases the products reflect significant improvements for professionals and hobbyists, yet the upgrade price is less than half the full price. Xara Xtreme Pro - $199, Upgrade $120 = 60%
As for the "Pro" label, I see much more weighty additions in the Pro versions I'm familiar with. Carrara 5 Pro and Vue 5 Pro boast dozens of important features not included(or needed) in their Standard version counterparts. Since I'm on the subject of features, I'd like to say a little about how they appeal to me as a professional. The overall goal here, for me (and one that would warrant the upgrade purchase) would be to replace Illustrator CS in my daily tool set. So...
• Flash animation - Sorry, as other folks have said. I have other Flash tools that are more advanced.
• Multi-page support - I can already do this with page tiling and output to Multipage PDF via CutePDF Writer (free utility)
• Enhanced Text tool - Great, important
• Photoshop PSD import and export - also important
• PDF/X support and many PDF export improvements - Never had a need for PDF/X or extended PDF options, but maybe time would tell
• Color Separations - Great
• Pantone spot and process colors - Great
• Levels control for XPE - Would rather use Photoshop
• Short-cut key configuration utility - This is the single most important improvement to me because it would greatly improve workflow without having to memorize a new command set.
But here's something that really kind of bothers me: Charles Moir said "Xortcuts is a utility that was created and donated to us from Rubem, as a result of a thread of TG forum some months ago about short-cuts. It's his code and product really - we just told him what the config files were to modify the short-cut settings." If rubem offered to donate this in the TG forum and in fact did donate this feature so that we could all have this improvement, and if it required no work from Xara then why do we have to pay $120 to get it. I think it should be offered as a free update for Xtreme. I would also be quite happy to pay rubem or Xara a reasonable price for the utility. But why do we need to wait for Xtreme Pro when the utility is already a done deal?
To sum up what I'm saying in this post, I would not argue with those who feel Xtreme Pro is worth the price or more, for that matter. I just believe very firmly that a lower, more market conscious price for both the full version and upgrade will yield more profit (by selling many more units) and help Xara develop a broader user base.
-
Re: Xara Xtreme Pro announced
Interesting stuff Parris, but it's not a view I or many others share.
In the professional world, I don't think that the price is as sensitive as you would have us believe, nor is it as sensitive in the hobbyist world either. I think that Xara have come to realise this, as well as the danger that underfunding development at the lower price point might endanger their professional following as rival product continues to be developed. I think the pantone features was particularly a problem in some circles.
I think they have it right. At $200 I still think Xara software is comparatively cheap software (though I am now hoping for great things in the future).
-
Re: Xara Xtreme Pro announced
Parris, quite interesting to read your thoughts. I agree with some things you say, but I don't see XtremePRO in the same Product line as Xtreme because I see the features in PRO aimed for different audiences, but that's just me. Compared to similar products, there is no Illustrator and IllustratorPRO, but yet Xara broke the rules we have been used to. Strangely, you can upgrade which shouldn't be possible in the first place really because I don't see it as an upgrade, rather than a new product line. An alternative could have been, no upgrade is possible, but the XaraPro for $99 - but i hear people already complaining about that too.
A full time illustrator would never need XtremePRO, a full time DTP person won't need illustration features - but yet we have it, and its called XaraPRO, so we should accept this new pricing sheme as it can't be compared to anything else out there.
Will new customers accept this pricing of $199? - No idea, it will be hard but only time can tell.
Honestly, anyone who works for years in Graphic Design using Illustrator and CS2 couldn't care less about any other product, i see it at my friends who are just too lazy and settled in their software pipeline and not willing to learn anything new, even if some tasks are way easier - but that's another topic.
-
Re: Xara Xtreme Pro announced
Some of the newer members may be interested in the prices of the Xara X series of programs.
2000 - Xara X retail $149 USD
2004 - Xara X¹ retail $189 USD
2005 - Xara Xtreme retail $89 USD
2006/7 (depends on release of retail version) Xara Xtreme Pro $199 USD
I've upgraded with each new version and will upgrade to Xtreme Pro when it is available to purchase (I try at least once a day ;) ).
I'm a hobbiest in the graphics world. Xara's products work the most logical of any programs I use. FYI: I use Photoshop 7 & CS, Illustrator 10, Paint Shop Pro versions 6 through 8.1 and I have used the trial versions of Freehand and CorelDraw. I also use Cinema4D 9, Maya 5, and TrueSpace 4 for 3D graphics.

Re: Xara Xtreme Pro announced
pauland, thanks for reading. But when you say " it's not a view I or many others share" , I assume you mean posters to this forum and not the world abroad. I'm sure that would be true in that case, since most posters are fans, even the ones who are asking for more ( me too to some degree).
I agree $200 is comparatively cheap software when compared to Illustrator or Corel Draw but at $200 Xtreme Pro will be the most expensive in it's weight class (again I'm talking market share not feature/value).
If I were still working for a company, rather than freelancing, my bosses would have asked me why I need another vector drawing program besides Illustrator. I still would have to give them a good answer, even though it's only $200 dollars. To be truely competitive with Illustrator and attract pros who likely already own Illy or similar, with all Adobe's Marketing advantage, Xara would have to match Illy feature for feature (at least most of the important ones) and then offer the full version for close to the same price as Adobe's upgrade. Then when it comes time to either upgrade or change apps it's a no brainer. Those who know about Xtreme Pro would choose it hands down because of faster redraw, better variable trans., etc.
You need a good answer to this question: Why should a current Illustrator owner choose Xtreme Pro over just upgrading their Illustrator license?*Good for you Soquili for answering this somewhat already. Logic is a very good argument.
-
Re: Xara Xtreme Pro announced
I think Xtreme Pro can attract new people, but I think the look of the interface must be changed. It is just to classic xara, and although there are many new features, it does not feel like a new edition.
for example, The xara pro splash screen gives me a feel of 'new' (although it can be just a tiny bit more pro), but the total interface is rather retro. Look for example to maxon cinema 4d, the latest release (10) has now a dark color scheme, with modern icons, it gives a more new and up to date look.

Re: Xara Xtreme Pro announced
I've downloaded Xara Pro and am using it. I've had one problem and one question. Frist the question. There's no release date yet but my download has a 30 limit. Will I have a problem at the end of the 30 days if the program isn't released yet?
Now the problem: The second time I opened Xara Pro (The first time was to reset some of the defaults) I resized the pasteboard, imported a jpeg, rotated it and then opened Xara Picture editor. When I did this I got the following error message:
Access violation exception at offset 0x01261134
This error message repeated several times as I tried the same procedure however the number at the end of the error message changed.
Here are a couple of the numbers that came up: 0x03071134; 0x042F1134 (this one came up three times). I imported a couple of other jpegs without a problem. The problem could have been with the jpeg, but I’ve used it with Xara Xtreme a few months ago without any problem. The other jpeg’s worked fine.
Thanks,

Here are a couple of the numbers that came up: 0x03071134; 0x042F1134 (this one came up three times). I imported a couple of other jpegs without a problem. The problem could have been with the jpeg, but I’ve used it with Xara Xtreme a few months ago without any problem. The other jpeg’s worked fine.
Thanks,
Louis F. Dow

Re: Xara Xtreme Pro announced
Just discovered the new news, and am intrigued!
I did a quick scan of the messages here but haven't found reference to the new pro version being compatible with the upcoming Windows Vista or dual processor computers.
My current laptop runs XP home and has an Intel Core Duo chip. I doubt the new software will make use of these today... but will it make use of it with a new operating system when released?

Re: Xara Xtreme Pro announced
I just purchased Pro and downloaded it. When I went to install it, it said I have a newer version of Xtreme installed and I must remove it before continuing tghe installation. Have I done somehing wrong?

And yes we do regard file interchange a priority and are doing what we can - and the answer to your question is yes, we will load both eps and pdf files.
Wolfgang's EPS and PDFs are here. Did the PDF import filter get dropped for the final release?
I have tried dragging and dropping a few PDFs but get errors either to say that no filter recognises them, or that there were no images found in my HTML document.

Charles Moir posted to say that Xtreme 'likes' the Core 2 Duo chips (I think we all do?!) without being able to take advantage of multiple processors, and elsewhere also says that Xtreme works in Vista save for some permission problems which they're working on.

Important Note: After purchase you will be able to unlock the trial but please note that the CD & manual are not yet in production (expected in stock Jan 07). The software is fully unlocked but this means you will not have access to some resources that are only on the CD (some clipart, plugins, fonts). The PDF import filter is only included on the CD version.

Re: Xara Xtreme Pro announced
Well spotted, thanks Steven. I'll have to start stalking the postman in mid January :)
