Full Chess Set.
OK, I've already admitted I like to tinker, and this project was crying out for a full set of pieces, and I just couldn't help myself, alright? But I'm in control, OK? I can say no any time! http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/wink.gif

Finished! An error corrected (again!) and some more tweaking of textures and some minor shape adjustments, especially in the board side trim, some final sanding and lacquering, and a decent wax polish.
A Happy New Year to everyone, and don't do anything I wouldn't do! http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/wink.gif

Mike,
You are simply going to hate me! http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/rolleyes.gif But despite the fact that you have created something I couldn't have done in a thousand years, I have one small criticism to make. hehe
Being a professional furniture maker of some 30 years, I noticed immediately, that the grain on the bottom left side and the opposite side are wrong. The grain should be running longtitudinally (along the length).
When I made my first picture frame in PSP I realized this same error and to correct it was very time consuming as I had to create the two opposite parallel sides separately. ack
Anyway.. fantastic work and one that I am more than a little envious over. http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif

Fantastic work Mike!

Sorry for the delay in replying, I've been in Gary's neck of the woods for a week, as guests at a wedding in Las Cruces, New Mexico http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/cool.gif
Pilgrim, I hate you, http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/wink.gif. In X3d terms, the frame is all one piece, (well, mostly), so the grain is all one texture, I will need to make separate pieces to allow for differing grain directions. Easy to fix, and thanks for the advice. http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/smile.gif
Egg, thanks!
And Happy New Year, folks.

Hi, Pilgrim.
Well I went back into the workshop wielding my trusty xaw, and xliced the frame into xeparate xides, so that I could align the textures for each xeparately.
It does look more realistic. Thanks for the tip.

That is really so incredible Mike, one question, How many shapes are involved?
Christine
Hello, Christine
There are 71 selectable shapes, though many of these represent multiple pieces. For instance, a pawn has three parts: a base, a collar, and a round top. Selecting the round top of a black pawn will select all the round tops of all the black pawns as a single selectable object. Similar economies apply to most other pieces.
The wooden frame now has five pieces, and all the black squares are a single object, as are all the white squares.
I must say this was one of the most enjoyable and interesting projects I have tackled, and though it is now finished and I am very happy with it, I may come back and have another go at the knight some time. http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/smile.gif
