Very nicely done Rik and Bill!
Nice, Rik, interesting and esoteric variation, Bill, and Frances, thank you: you found my reading glasses and all this time I thought they were behind the sofa.
I really wish someone who isn't a moderator would join in! Bob and Mike, you're cool, but lurkers...you're on, man. :)

You did, Mike, you did, on the first page.
The early Apple advertisement is interesting in a number of respects. The advertisers really took a gamble on showing the brand logo and people, but not much of a photo of the computer, the "product" in an ad, you know?
The Cooper in the ad, also, is interesting. Look closely at the lowercase "e" and the "p' s. Unlike the out-of-the-box Cooper, this rendition has diagonally stressed stems.
Hmmm. Thought is was Windsor Condensed Black at first!

Here are a few ideas I have been working on. Don't expect to like all of them these are just some ideas I have been playing around with. The umbrella is a paper drink umprella I drew for a different idea and tried to make it work here.

Hey, Larry—
I think what you've done goes far beyond "FontPlay", at least artistically, and well into "commercial design".
I feel as though, if I were your boss (thankfully I'm not), I'd encourage you to pursue the second on with the eyeglasses treatment, and the one with the cocktail umbrella. These both begin with very strong design elements all in the right proportion to one another and I think if you polished them—give more attention to shading, shadows, highlights, perspective/point of view...then you got a couple of fine portfolio pieces, Larry.
It's not how well you draw. It's how well you think, that gets you work.
Concept is everything.
My Best,
Gary
I have to agree with Gary, the one with the eyeglasses and the one with the drink umbrella are my favourites too.
Hear, hear.
Larry, flesh the thing out...here's a rough that contains a few ideas for you.
Borrow away, please! I wanna see where you take this!

A collage (sort of). Messing with transparencies.

The 16 f characters facing each other, look like eight vaguely evil humanoid figures linking hands and forming a humanoid chain around the outcast in their community.
