Re: The Xara Xone Holiday Celebration
@Larry and all—
Attached is a 150ppi copy of our tree, with presents underneath. wrapped in a grid. You can now create not one, but several gifts in the proper perspective beneath our tree. If one of the proportions of the boxes isn't to your liking, just use Xara's Line tool to extend the perspective on the box, and then draw i, texture it, and post it here.
If anyone wants different poses:
1.) You're pushing your luck, and
2.) Just ask in a post here.

Another Bou-tune
I enjoy "Greensleeves" all year 'round, but the song takes on a different meaning—and lyrics—this time of the season.
This one if from this year's album.

Re: Another Bou-tune
Thank you very much Gare. The perspective grid is a terrific idea.
-
Re: Another Bou-tune
You're welcome, Larry.
Now, because all I did was put some cubes into the scene I modeled and then rendered, the boxes are virtually in the scene, so in addition to perspective, you get an idea of how light is falling into the scene, too.
In case you want to make the perfect gift.
And, no, contrary to the advertisements, a subscription to Sports Illustrated is not the perfect git.

Re: Another Bou-tune
A question about the lighting in the scene. I see shadows being cast in two directions I think the main light source is from top left with a secondary light source coming from the right (the window) Have I got that right? I figure if I'm going to get the perspective right I should get the lighting right :) Right, right, right, ;))

Re: The 2012 Xara Xone Tree-Trimming Collaboration
@Asher—Thanks, and will get to adding them tomorrow!
@Frances—
Sorry! I went with a flattering lighting setup for the tree without thinking first about direction, number of lights, or intensity. The main light source is coming in from the venetian blinds at camera right, but I have a catch light (remember this month's tutorial?) at 1/5th the power of the main light coming in from camera left. Plus there is diffuse lighting globally: if you're a modeling weenie, I used an HDR image from Dorsch images for the Global Illumination.
Attachment 93362
Oh, and pardon my probable misuse of the term "lumen" in my diagram. The modeler is fairly accurate when comparing a photo to a render, but there are some labels and stuff that escape me, such illumination being relative to the size of objects in the scene.
I hope this image helps explain where the light is coming from: you can see where the camera is relative to the tree. But this image might prove to confuse more than help! Just take it as gospel that the boxes are more stongly lit from the right, ad if you follow the grids and put your own artwork into the original JPEG I posted very early in this thread, you will just see whether the lighting you suggest on your gift is correct or not.
Hey, there are so many different lighting angles on the ornaments right now, who cares?

Thanks, Gare, a great effort. Sorry to send another hanging ornament - this is a very old friend and I can't imagine a tree without him. He's showing his age, but is much loved.........

Beautiful, Penny.
I'll be doing some decorating today, actually.
And I'm wondering when The Administrator and I will get around to our analog tree...
Here's another Public Domain song I recorded and mixed-down digitally, attached. It's an mp3 inside the Zip archive.

Here is something for under the tree! Someone has been naughty and gotten into his present early! ;)) The doggie is a drawing I did of my little Shih Tzu a couple of years ago and for this I made a bitmap copy of the dog (other wise the file would be way to big!)

Re: The 2012 Xara Xone Tree-Trimming Collaboration
No Christmas posting folks but can anyone point me the way to the discussion we had on adding noise to images, I know Gary posted some noise tiles for free use and how to apply them but I can't find the link for the life of me :o

It's O/T, but it's also the season of compassion and charity.
Attached, stygg.
Because I can't find them, either!
Let me know if these will do for whatever you need them for. Some are good bump maps, others are fractal noise.

Bill's bubble animation was difficult to incorporate into our group collaboration, but here's what I came up with: a section that's animated, and then a still with everyone else's ornaments.

Like the Christmas tree idea. Here is my
contribution, a nativity ornament. It was done
entirely in Xara7 except for the original black and
white line drawing which used TurboCad. Not sure
any of this will show up because FAQ wasn't too
clear. Is there a way to preview/edit a post before it
goes live?

Yes, Click on Go advanced if you haven't already, then Preview Post
EDIT: I forget how long you have that you can edit your post. 2 or 4 hours I think. After that you must contack a moderator of that forum to make any changes or delete the post.

Re: The 2012 Xara Xone Tree-Trimming Collaboration
@ iagman—
Welcome to TalkGraphics and the Xara Xone thread, iagman. your first post is a hands-down winner, friend!
I'll post your contribution and Larry's within the next few hours.
@Larry—
You and I had the same idea—to honor the memory of Bill Taylor with one of his holiday-oriented drawings.
You know what I think I'll do? As we get closer to the 25th, I don't expect a lot more work on the tree. So how about I finish it off with an angel looking down at all the splendid ornaments, especially Bill's two: the GIF animated bubble candle and this stained glass piece.
@Frances—
You said you had a seven pointed star? Can you post it or PM it to me as an attachment? Do you think the angel idea, or yours, is more in the spirit of the season, and also a tribute to a friend?

Re: The 2012 Xara Xone Tree-Trimming Collaboration
Good Idea Gare. Without seeing the star I like the angel idea.
-
Re: The 2012 Xara Xone Tree-Trimming Collaboration
We have a few days, Larry. I'll write to Frances PM-wise and we'll be fair about the conclusion of the tree.
I think this collaboration kicks, man. I've even sent an image to Kate for possible inclusion in the next Outsider.

Re: The 2012 Xara Xone Tree-Trimming Collaboration
I think we're just about there!
@iagman, I thought I could make your splendid ornament a little larger in the final render by making it a card on the floor, if you don't mind.
Frances contributed a very special snowflake for the top of our tree. I find it hard to imagine that anyone hasn't heard the bad news that Bill Taylor is no longer with us. Frances made the ornament with 7 gems, each one representing a forum that Bill moderated and the close-up I've attached here shows the center of the gemstones.

Y'all did great! Pull up a chair, light some seasoned hardwood, make sure you own a fireplace before lighting the logs, and enjoy our group effort here!

Re: The 2012 Xara Xone Tree-Trimming Collaboration
The tree looks beautiful! This has been a wonderful group effort Merry Christmas everyone!
-
Re: The 2012 Xara Xone Tree-Trimming Collaboration
I have to say that the final tree is a well thought out, a very touching tribute to Mr. Bill Taylor. I'll just say I have certainly shed some tears when considering all the beautiful things that Bill represents and the far-reaching effects he has had on any and all members of this terrific forum.
As he was certainly a star on these forums, and much more, it is such a befitting remembrance.
Beautifully done friends,
-
Re: The 2012 Xara Xone Tree-Trimming Collaboration
The snowflake is beautiful, thanks Francis. I hope we can get a nice blow up of the tree when it is finished.
-
Re: The 2012 Xara Xone Tree-Trimming Collaboration
Are we missing the naughty dog that Francis gave us?
-
Re: The 2012 Xara Xone Tree-Trimming Collaboration
@ Grace, yes, we are missing the pup-in-the-box, sorry!
I'm sort of under pressure for closure on this collaboration as we get closer to The Big Day! Barb and I don't even have a tree in the livingroom yet and I HAVE to get a December video out for the Xara Xone.
I will make the whole tree with ornaments available as a Xara document, and it's going to be large, in the next few days, okay?
My Best,
Gary
-
Re: The 2012 Xara Xone Tree-Trimming Collaboration
The tree looks splendid Gary and the star on top by Francis is great, also a lovely tribute to Bill with the card, a man we will all miss very much. Getting a larger version of the finished tree will be good as it is a splendid effort by all who contributed to it and non more so than yourself Gary for making it possible.

Re: The 2012 Xara Xone Tree-Trimming Collaboration
I'll tell you all what:
I'll try ("try" is the operative word here!) to add Frances' naughty pup to the composition, and then zip up my working file that has all the elements in it, and post a Dropbox link, only because I don't want to put more large traffic on tg's server space—and try to do it over the weekend, okay?
It's 21MB and it's going to stay that way, because XAR files don't squish.
I'd ask that everyone is respectful of the ornaments that others have posted and are in the file, however, that said, it might be interesting if anyone wants to rearrange the ornaments a little.
I admit that this was our Maiden voyage on this collaboration and I could have organized it better.
Deal?

Re: The 2012 Xara Xone Tree-Trimming Collaboration
Frances, that is a splendid star tree topper. Thank you for doing that.

Re: The 2012 Xara Xone Tree-Trimming Collaboration
Seeing it is our Maiden Voyage, I think it should stay exactly as it is except for trying to get the puppy in if possible =D>

Re: The 2012 Xara Xone Tree-Trimming Collaboration
Okay, then this begs a question:
Would our group (and anyone who wanders in here, too) prefer just a high-res JPEG instead of the *.XAR file?
It would be easier to share, and as you say, stygg, it's probably okay just the way it is (and we'll do better next year!)
?, everyone ?
Thanks!
