Ciao Ivan, let me ask: why are you telling to install inkscape 0.46 prior to the development version? I usually use just the latter, but could be missing something.
He He ! Thanks for the info Giovanni ! Yes that works fine without installing 0.46 prior ; I got the reply here : http://www.inkscapeforum.com/viewtop...8&p=9142#p9142 . I have edited my post. On the other hand I should replace it by a more graphic tutorial.

Neon Lightings Effects with Blur and Convolve Matrix
Enjoy,
ivan
Hi Ivan,
Though your effects look nice, they also can be produced in Xtreme
Just do your way with the paint live effect-tool
Hans
created a "brush"
-a strange shape from some lines>add shapes>converted to editable shapes
gave it some feathering>created bg rectangle with color black
exported to the media folder C:\Program Files\Xara\Xara Xtreme Pro 4\PCFx\media\fx\art_brushes
Now in Xtreme i load the brush in the live effect>art>painting
and change the settings to my needs>done
Hans
I played around with this a bit, and I started a new thread for this. I also played around with creating custom paper textures too!
Under Glass
To increase or remove refraction effect, simply change the Displacement Map amount in the Object/Filter Effects Dialog Box

Reminded me of some glass work I've been doing lately using the free Chrome Eye Candy plugin as a transparency.
Of course, you have also the very nice Eye Candy Glass. I use it often !
But try to change it some settings to obtain an alternate "Plastic Wrap" like here below... ;) It even has bubbles added and is extremely versatile.
(in the joined file, the "plast" examples change with the bitmap darkness. If you go to the Color Matrix and change the left below entry from -8 to -4, the bubbles move to the lighter areas. Try also for example to invert from positive to negative the height in the Specular Lighting or Change morphology from Dilate to Contract (or "Shrink", I don't know which word is used in Inkscape English version...) Just thing to move a little bit your picture after changing settings because there is a little bug in display redraw at the moment).

First attempt at a gel effect with reflexion + internal refraction.
Works on outlines and filled shapes.
You have the choice between the one shot solution or the two steps where you can add the reflective/refractive effect on top of a copy of the unfiltered object (adding some transparency or not to this copy). Warning ! Adding transparency to the filtered objects destroy the effect (or change it drastically to something else).

You are right ! And at first time I was afraid when I saw that UI. But my curiosity was stronger... and as I was alone with my PC I didn't hesitate to try some exciting and dangerous things :D
Loading some prebuild effects (the most simple at first times) and looking at their settings is useful. That was my first step. Afterwards, I tried to build the same, adding one primitive after the other, and each time I obtained something new and interesting I saved my document under a new name.
There are also some very interesting tutorials here : http://fedev.blogspot.com/search/lab...cts%20Tutorial
However 3D programs texturising UI are often much more complex and with 3D you must add long rendering times before seeing the result.
But Inkscape developpers are working on different projects in this area : http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/images...s_dialogue.svg
The only question is : how to become more user friendly without removing the power and flexibility ?
kindly,
ivan
At the moment in Inkscape development versions you can apply a filter to an object, and afterwards select another prebuild one in the Effects/Filters dropdown list. The component of this second one will combine with those of the first applied to create a new filter. And that was one of the ways I create my own Filters library.
But at one time I asked me how I could apply several overlaid filters to an object without combining their components.
The solution is fairly easy :
1° after applying the first Filter to your object, draw anything without fill nor outline close to it ;
2° group your filtered object with this new one
3° apply the second filter to the whole group.

Thanks Ivan, your explanation is interesting and I see it's all matter of experiment different things.
The new GUI proposal looks promising, too, so I guess in the future this live-effects technology will become even more user-friendly (I couldn't say "more powerful" because I really can't imagine anything impossible with the current features).
Your last example is, again, impressive.
Let me ask just another question: how are performance on your machine? I'm using it with an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 2600 with 256 MB RAM, and the document is really slow.
Could be I'm simply spoiled by Xara Xtreme speed. ;)
As for Xara I am not sure this is a matter of graphic cards. I have a NVidia Quadro FX 2500 512 Mo RAM, but its qualities mainly concern 3D and Open GL. I didn't see a so big difference with my previous ATI X 800 PRO GTO. For this kind of 2D applications I think the CPU remains more important than the GPU at the moment.
Xara remains a lot faster on my machine. However in Inkscape I often don't use the best display settings. Set them on Mid or Low quality in File/Inkscape Preferences/Filters and set the blur display on not too high quality ; then when you want move, resize, draw or change something quickly while complex filters are applied, change momentarily Display/Display Mode to No Filters.
kindly,
ivan
Sorry ! My above little tutorial will be partly obsolete. BBYAC on Inkscape Forum said me that one can create one objects groups in Inkscape exactly like in Xara. Simply select your object and press CTRL+G. Then you can apply the second Filter.

NICE !

Just fun combining filters on text...

Inkscape's UI for SVG effects is a typical example of "Application made for programmers, not for users" (like so often with open-source stuff): It's too technical and incomprehensible for a normal person.
Let alone that I gave up playing with SVG effects after 5 minutes, because in those 5 minutes I had 3 crashes :) (In the stable version, that is)
define 'user'
define 'technical'
define 'normal'
:D
some 'normal' people might get a bit miffed at it being suggested they could be so technically illiterate, or so easily put off... ;)
;) You should have taken my post with a grain of salt (if that is the correct way to say it :))
I'm pretty technical myself (developed something akin to Xtreme for in-house use here) - just that I try not to lose the sense for the requirements of users while I'm floating in my 11th-cloud-coding-spheres ;)
we say 'pinch' where I come from, not 'grain' - but its the same thing....
users are many and varied, its as well not to underestimate them - rather like voters they often understand more than they let on, especially the younger ones... :p
but sure I know what you mean - just sounded a bit posture-like to me, sorry if that was wrong
:) It was not my intention to sound like that - I was rather criticising programmers losing connection with their userbase in general.
However, to get back on topic, I've played around with inkscape quite a lot and while it may be one of the better applications in the world of open-source, I still had the typical "Open-source feeling" while using it. It felt unfinished, slow, and somehow clunky. Same as with Gimp.
But I rather stop my "random bashing session" now! :)
Far from beeing a programmer I like Inkscape. I think any artistic technique needs some time to learn it. Not only computer arts : I renounced to learn oil painting because it was too technical for me... However I love great oil paintings !
But you are not alone concerning the UI. See also my previous post about UI : http://www.talkgraphics.com/showpost...0&postcount=55

I don't think inkscape programmers have lost touch with their userbase and that to me is the point ....
I have got this one while preparing my filters to put them on OpenClipart.
Stunning how it isolates so distinctly the right shapes !

ivan
I am beginning to upload revised and completed files. They are also reorganized by themes there.

Thanks! Looks like a great resource.
Ivan,
today I will join a meeting faaaar to late because I was enjoying reading through the complete thread.
It was great fun, both entertaining and informational for me.
Simply great work. Even the samples are pleasing my eyes
Thanks,
Juergen
Ivan, which version of Inkscape are you using?
[I did try several of the latest development builds (for Win XP), and these all seem to have severe problems with bitmap handling.]
The last one I can use correctly under my XP is the 20009. However now and from two days I use the regular 0.46 on Ubuntu I installed togheter with my XP... and it works much better there...
kindly,
ivan
Ivan,
I must join in and agree with Juergen when he said, in part:
"It was great fun, both entertaining and informational for me.

Your image in post #72 is DELICIOUS!
I've actually loaded Inkscape on to my Linux (Ubuntu) machine too. It works so well there I've not bothered to get the Windows version yet and now perhaps I won't. I must now spend more time on the Xara/Inkscape interaction!
Thanks for this great thread.
Bob C.
Thanks a lot !
I have the same impression with Inkscape on Ubuntu : no crashes, commands always accessible, quick reply, better display, even if it's not so much quicker. However if you don't use a development version of Inkscape, the filters will render and export somewhat lighter and slightly differently, like if they were applied with less intensity.
Kindly,
ivan
Those who downloaded the latest snapshots of Inkscape 0.46 devel this week perhaps noticed that now my filters are available directly from the menu Filters.
There are a lot of new ones including colorizing filters, outlines smoothing...
I am discussing and working with the developers who will add some more filters management facilities. I will explain in another post how you can insert your own filters in the menu and even create your own sub menus. But it's late now here and I must go to bed ...!
kindly,
ivan
nice one Ivan :)
Ivan, I'm so lost in inkscape - I downloaded the latest Win32 version (I think - Inkscape 0.46+devel r20655, built Feb 9 2009) and it doesn't have a Filters menu.
Nothing is listed under Object > Filter Editor...
Maybe the version you referenced is the Linux/Unix version?
