The original guy who created Painter, Mark Zimmer, along with Tom Hedges and John Derry are working on the Painter 6.1 patch and the Painter 7 upgrade, consulting with Corel.. and have been working on Painter 7 since before Corel bought it.
It's their baby and they're still caring for it, so I think we're getting the best for Painter.. at least if we want it to stay Painter (keeping my fingers crossed that they don't change it to be too much like other Corel products and lose the famous "personality" Painter has).
