Re: real to virtual
just playing with your original question. Simply cut the boat in half, put a four point transparency on the right half, dragged it right down to minimum, and then cloned a non transparent version and just put it on top with a mixed transparency. Not too sure how this would look on your leaf but is very easy to try...........frank
I decided to upload another picture since this one looses a bit because of it's small size. I also left an opening in the middle so you can see the 4 point transparency by itself

Re: real to virtual
here is what i would do with this idea (for what its worth anyway)....
I actually have been working on a similar idea myself for a few years... just another design in my unfinished basket anyway here's my perspective on it....
Your obviously keen to show a transition from real to vector to like pixelated...
To convey the idea of digitizing something....
So i think alot of people are feeling their way around this concept in various ways...
it is obvious that the stem of the leaf is a good transition line and since you want people to recognize the object leaving the whole left hand side of the image in full life like render makes allot of sense.
then for the right hand side i would divide this in half (inner and outer) and for the inner i would do a vector colour break down...
I.e the left hand side would use smooth gradients the inner right would have hard lines and shapes of uniform colour....
Then the outer right would be a transition from the vector shapes to broken up squares that would get sparser and when you got to the edge "blur off" by having some of these pixels flying out....
Also to accentuate this transition i would put a wave motif behind the logo to show that something is sweeping through the logo...this would start off solid and then gradually fade and turn into digital squares....
just my ideas on the topic...as i said i have a similar design that i have been working on for some time.

Just to help you out a bit dude...(seeing as you sounded a little lost)...
Here's a mock-up of what i was talking about...
I would probably work it a bit more if the job was mine but for what its worth...
Here is a suggestion...
The concept would probably need refining and simplification before it was really mature but i think this gives you the gutts of the concept.

Re: real to virtual
Morphonius,
ah, thanks a lot for the image. Now I really understand what you mean.
The good idea on this way to do it would be that the leaf itself could be used anywhere, even as an icon and the transition in the background can be used where appropriate.
Good idea ...
I fear you got me into that thing again ;=)

Re: real to virtual
I like the idea myself but i have to confess that i think it needs more work...
i think the outline of the leaf on the right could be de-accentuated by also dotting this somehow to show that the right hand side is the pix elated side...
And also i think the number of wave lines could be reduced to say 3 and the concept honed a bit more so as to make it a stand alone in one colour (ideally)
Anyway hope it all works out for you...
