Re: Cartooning
Well far be it for me to steer folks away from Xara, but a had a bit of a browse for other software created to achieve the much asked about 'cartoon' effect and came across 'IntoCartoon'.
There's a free trials of both versions available here:
http://www.intocartoon.com/download.html
The results are quite impressive, though big images are a big of a handfull and slow to process. There's much I haven't explorered yet but here is a quickie I created with IntoCartoon from an image freely available from http://www.seriouswheels.com
I could see this being the starting point for a fully vectorised scalable illustration project in Xara?

Re: Cartooning
Hey - I've seen that program before somewhere - on one of these forums I think - but a search on intocartoon didn't show anything else - how things go round in circles :D
Thanks for reminding me Sledger, I'd forgotten all about it :)

Re: Cartooning
back to poster edges :D
raster
vector - xara
vector - inkscape
[again xar file 1.03 MB and inkscape pdf output over 2MB - xar file contains all three and pdf just the third - xara is good at vector file size management :) ]
EDIT - THE INKSCAPE TRACE SEEMS BEST AND IN XAR FILE NOT THAT BIG SO I'VE INCLUDED IT

Re: Cartooning
That's a good Beckham likeness, Derek, especially considering how little detail there is. I like your choice of colours.
Steve, the new avatar is lovely.
This forum is costing me a fortune, the number of software suggestions I've taken a fancy too and had to buy is growing steadily. :)
I wasn't sure if I should have posted this in the off topic forum,
and linked to it here, but this post seems as on topic as previous ones in this thread and it may help dirty daddy to decide if Intocartoon is a viable option.
I had to download Intocartoon, and in just a couple of minutes I was able to make a sketch from a colour photo of my cat on our garden wall that has to be as good as anything photoshop could do.
I shall enjoy experimenting with all the options.
Saludos,
Bob.

Re: Cartooning
Thanks Bob - the freehand stroke shapes of xara are definitely one of its great strengths.
Good drawing Derek - especially as drawing from newspaper photos not ideal :)
I had a play with intocartoon a while back as I said earlier on. Its a very good photo to 'sketch' tool - I've downloaded it again for a second go.
You got a well trained cat there - ours never used to stay still at the slightest hint of a lens.... probably knew what a terrible photographer I am :D

Re: Cartooning
Not sure if this helps, but there is also Comic Life:
