If you have it, I can recommend using Xara3D to do your shading. The "Ball x 1.X3D" example in the 'Designs' folder is a good one, and you can use whatever texture you like.

Xara3D! Now why didn't I think of that. I'm off to play with it now.
Before I do, I'd just like to say that I never realised that when I started this thread it would generate such a load of balls.;)

As you can see it does a better job than the XX mould tool or the Paintshop Pro filter.

For a vector program, XX does amazing things with bitmaps.
