Bob, the errors are because Pro has features that Xtreme doesn't.
The linked colour has to be linked by at least one component of the colour to which it is linked. I chose not to link with the hue so I could get a more cyan look to the lower highlight in the button. That means the saturation and value are linked but the hue is not.
As long as you keep the same hue and only change the saturation and value of the base colour the linked colour updates the saturation and value.
It makes for some interesting challenges when attempting to make buttons where the base colour can be fully edited and have the highlights the slight offset that I prefer. So far I haven't been able to do that, I have to edit each colour individually.
You can ungroup the button objects and then select the circle and change the center of the circular fill to the Tint. That will allow you to change the hue. This makes the button more 'flat' in colour, in my opinion.
Back in the stoneage and I was in college learning about colour theory, pixels were unknown and colours were pigment mixed into a medium:
Tint = Base Colour mixed with White the more white added the lighter the tint.
Shade = Base Colour mixed with Black the more black added the darker the shade.
Black and white were not referred to as colours but as values.
The most common mediums were linseed oil, cottenseed oil, and water, acrylics didn't exit back then :D
Thanks for the xar file Soquili, its set up well, but still no changes in
the linked/tint colours, so there must be something wrong with my system,
could it be that my local drive has no more than 1 gig of space left at
this time?? As that may be what is causing my system to not work certain
functions in the software, maybe because the pc/windows itself needs
2 gig of harddrive or something like that to function properly??
(I don`t have I.T skills so just guessing)
Atleast I know Im linking the colours correctly,
I hope its not a little game to get people to upgrade to PRO, because of
an important function like linked colours. I am upgrading anyway.
The main thing is once I set up a colour as linked to a NAMED PARENT colour
then all I need to do then is adjust the parent colour in the COLOUR EDITOR
and the linked colour SHOULD change is that correct?
In the shot below I clicked on the rectangle and
chose yellow-chartreuse as the PARENT COLOUR from
the COLOUR GALLERY
Then I clicked on the circle and for simplicity also chose the same
colour from the colour gallery.
Then with the circle still selected, in the COLOUR EDITOR
I selected "link to another colour" from the drop down box to
link it to yellow-chartreuse, I UNTICKED the V for value, so I could
alter that component. Dragging it down I created an almost Olive colour.
Now from there I believe all I have to do is click back on the yellow-chartreuse RECTANGLE, adjust its colour in the COLOUR EDITOR and
the linked circle colour should also change? (doesnt work for me, I have
xara X1 and XARA EXTREME, not working in either on my old system
anyway)
I have attached this XAR file here if you want to demo. If it works for you
Soquili with how I have done it then it means either only PRO is working
with linked colours or my system is gonzo.
Clicking on the rectangle doesn't put the named colour as active in the colour editor. If you look you will see it shows local fill color when you select the rectangle. You can either click the drop down menu and select the named colour from there or you can drag the named colour from the colour line onto the color editor to make it the active colour. Now when you make changes it will update the named colour and your linked colour.
Bill,
Still isn't working on my XPRO. Maybe you could provide a step by step on exactly what you do to create a linked color, not a shade of the parent color.
ron
Ron, I'll try:
1. Create your named colour. The currently selected object will have that as it's fill colour.
2. Create or select a new object. In the Color Editor (with the Advanced Options visible) select "Linked to another color".
3. Find the named colour you created in step 1 as the Parent color.
4. Your new object will have the same hue, saturation, and value (or same RGB, or same CMYK; depending on your colour editor choice).
5. Decide which component you want to be different from the base colour (remember at least one component must be the same for the link to function). Untick the component or components you want to be different.
6. Change the components that you unticked in step 5.
NOTE: I work mostly in the HSV colour settings.
In the file I attached earlier, I decided that I wanted a different hue for the linked colour. Because I would use this linked colour as the lower highlight, I linked to the tint (lighter version of the base colour).
Now I have a different hue linked to a lighter version of the base colour that will always be lighter than the base regardless of any changes made. The linked colour will change saturation and value as the Tint changes in those values but the linked colours hue will remain constant.
The Tint changes with the base colour changes but remains a constant percentage lighter than the base.
Thanks, Bill, that's quite clear. The whole linking, tinting, shading area is fascinating.
firstly to others unfamiliar with creating linked colours:
theres a video that teaches how to create links, tints, and shades,
its called "USING TINTS" but should be named creating links tints and shades.
Its in the help file:
HELP FILE under the help menu (F1)
select
OVERVIEWS
in there a tab called
COLORS
one of the movies reads USING TINTS.
that shows you how to create LINKED colours, and tints, and shades. (all 3)
GOD BLESS YOU BILL,
(BASHING MY KEYBOARD LIKE A THUNDEROUS GORRILLA)
Ive spent 2 mornings before work (6hours) trying to figure this out
in the help file:
The help file misses the important STEP of saying
"SELECT THE COLOUR FROM THE GALLERY AND DRAG IT TO
THE COLOUR EDITOR,
THEN
you will be able to adjust it there and
the linked colours will update", maybe I missed that in my sleepiness.
One can easily believe that once you have linked another shapes
colour to the first shapes fill colour, that you only
have to select the object that contained the first colour
(the BASE named parent colour)
and adjust it in the colour editor and the linked colours will update.
BUT
I can understand now why you cannot just click on the first shape that
contains the base parent colour, adjust its HSV in the colour editor,
and expect the linked colours to change, because if this were the case
you would not be able to adjust that shapes colour on a local level
(meaning just its own colour) without affecting all the linked colours.
So then the reality to remember is your never actually linking to the
colour in that original shape. your linking to a NAMED COLOUR in the colour
gallery that the original shape just happens to be filled with.
If you continue to think that you are linking other shapes colours to
the original shapes colour you`ll be confused as to why when you change
that original shapes colour the linked colours dont change, atleast that
was my initial confusion.
The thing is when I drag the named parent colour from the colour galleryto the colour editor, and adjust it, the shapes with links
to that parent colour do change,
but the original base named parent colour in the parent object do not change, which I thought it would, once again I have to realize that linked
colours are NOT actually linked to that object or its local colour fill,
but to the NAMED COLOUR in the COLOUR GALLERY.
Still, If I had a complex drawing
like the car at the end of that "USING TINTS" VIDEO
in the help file I pointed out earlier, then in that case if you adjusted
the linked colours, if the original base colour didnt change it would throw
the car out of wack I thought, anyway may be wrong again.
I`ll learn by doing my own work.
So Xara gives you
that option of adjusting the base parent colour on a local level by
clicking on that specific shape that contains the base colour,
or alternatively, adjusting all the linked colours to that original
named base parent colour by dragging that named parent colour from the
colour gallery to the colour editor first.
Just bare in mind if you drag that named colour from
the colour gallery to the colour editor and adjust it, you WILL adjust the
linked colours, but NOT the shapes that have the original base named parent colour
On another note,
I would like to be able to just click on one of the shapes containing
the child colour linked to the parent and the COLOUR EDITOR autopopulates
to hold that colour again. I find after adding the parent colour from the
colour gallery and adjusting it, if I want to then click on the child colour
shape again to adjust its colour locally, or its linked settings,
I have to click off the drawing on the page then click on
the shape to get that colour to populate the colour editor.
its a 2 step process. Xara is a direct action tool so we should program
that step in? or am I missing something here?
and again another question,
WHERE CAN I SET UP TO RECEIVE NOTIFICATION OF NEW POSTS TO
THE XARA FORUM? From what I can see I can only recieve notification
for the specific thread I post to...
Bill,
Thanks, that helped alot. I see how it works now. Great instructions.
Thanks again.
ron
Marky, Bob, and Ron I'm glad that I could help.
Marky I'm not sure you can be notified of new posts in general, only those threads to which you subscribe.
