Re: Xtreme Disappointment
There is nothing like a good moan! Can I ask the members here what they paid for Extreme? and for that they get a programme which exports PDF's, with out adverts, tools that you can create Live Effects using either bought or free PS plugins. All of this, and in my own experience faster than X1, just for £27 how can you not go for it, it is a bargin.
I don't use Xtreme very often because most of my work is just plain vectors with maybe a few trans, feathered areas and maybe a dropped shadow here and there. What did I have to pay for AI CS2 upgrade to get Live Paint & Live Trace, a whopping £240, tell me who is offering the best deal.
Re: Xtreme Disappointment
Can I second Albacore's comments.
Can we also remember that whilst Xara Ltd is not a charity, chucking a little money their way once a year does help fund continuing development. If enough people don't then they will wither away and you will have no choice but to fork out the cost for Illustrator et al. Software development costs have a big bell curve and unless there is a matching revenue curve then the next development project won't happen.

Every penny they asked for! We can't be blamed if they cut the price, but I don't think anyone is saying that we should accept any cut in quality?

But I'd still like to know what's happening on the development scene -- or, rather, behind the scenes. Giving out a wee bit of info will cost Xara next to nowt and will make moaners like me shut up.

You mean a professional print artist, right? I get paid to fly all over the world as a "professional graphic artist" and I have virtually no use at all for anything print related.

No-one's moaning but it seems pretty damned stupid that so many users [even one is probably too many] find more reasons to stick with the old version than to update to the new one, especially when my original post concerns a new feature that is supposed to be more effiicient but is actually noticably less efficient on both my laptop and workstation. If I had known up-front that I was going to find it inferior for everyday work it would not have stopped me from buying the upgrade but it would most certainly have stopped me from uninstalling X1. You are reading things into posts that are not there.
Re: Xtreme Disappointment
hi,
it's nice of xara to sell their app cheap but i still want an app work correctly.
i'm thinking of using x1 instead of xtreme too because xtreme behaves quirky especially with paste attributes. and i do a lot of attribute pasting :b
the text behaviour needs fixing too.
stepping back to x1 wouldn't be a problem for me because i don't use any of the new features.
i'm often thinking of using illustrator or freehand instead but i just love xara's ease and speed.
why don't they just keep x1 and add some cmyk and maybe some nice vector tools. like a tool to round edges or some stuff like you find in illustrator (distort stuff).
but the main thing would be cmyk i think.
some copy text features would be nice too. like variable hypens and tabs.
this bitmap filter stuff is nice for beginners but advanced users need an vector drawing app for creating complex vector stuff.
and to come back to xara's pricing.
i'd pay 200 euros for it.

Easily!
My most important applications are Outlook, Word and Excel (£150 to upgrade to Office 2003?), Dreamweaver and Fireworks (£299 to upgrade to Studio 8), my accounts software MYOB (£179 to upgrade to v15), and Xara X1 (£25 to upgrade to Xtreme).
Office is worth the upgrade because Outlook 2003 is much better than Outlook 2002, I'm not sure Studio was worth the upgrade but it's a bit quicker and nicer to use so it's not money wasted, MYOB was really worth it but I did upgrade from an old revision - jumping from 11 to 15, and Xtreme... the cheapest of them all and the upgrade I use the least! I think it's probably fair to say most of those applications have a new release every 12-18 months.
I'm firmly in the "let me pay more, give me more" camp, but as time goes by I'm realising that the sign at the entrance to the camp now reads "minority professional users" as more and more people move into the "give me cheap, quick and easy gadgets to play with" camp.
Re: Xtreme Disappointment
Hi All,
I don't like using the quote facility so if I can answer a few crits here:
I find Xtreme faster than X1 in my workstation I can't compare the both on my laptop as I have not installed Xtreme on it. It must be something to do with your graphics card causing the loss of speed.
I was one of the members that asked frequently for import and export of PDF's, well we got the export and now I can take drawings into AI with ease.
I aggree that Xtreme is aimed at the hobbyist and web work.
I do a lot of work where the output is for the printers and so long that I watch what I am doing with colours I can get what I want. If you were doing quality high res photo's you do not want it in CMYK as the colours would wash out. As with all print work there are no total solutions in one package everyone jumps from one piece of software to another to get the results they want with software they feel comfortable with.
Yes like everyone else I would like to see other tools in Xara but would I use them. I could count on two hands the number of time that I have used the "Mesh Tool" in AI for work as you never get the time to use it properly.
Finally I just think that the PDF export is worth the money I paid Xara for Extreme and no I do not like using the "live Effect" as it produces to many crashes and also I just want to produce vector drawing with a very few bitmap effects.
Re: Xtreme Disappointment
...i don't think anyone here is complaining about a few euros spent. it's just about functionality. and to the point that you agree this is a hobbyist app i only can say that for me as a professional user this is they coolest vector app on the market :b (except the cmyk stuff missing)

I think you have that arse-about. My laptop has a QuadroFX 1400 GO card in it and my workstation has a Quadro4 750 XGL so it is far more likely that I never had an issue with speed in the first place and adding in the extra step of creating a proxy has slowed down a process that was already lightning fast for me. 2D performance on Quadro based cards is amazing, I can't imagine ever using any other type of graphics card.
I will probably reinstall X1 this weekend, to see if it is any slower. At the moment, though, I get much greater usability from having the proxy switched off in Xtreme.
