For the record, I don't know Mark, but yes, it was sort of meant as a same town joust...
I think Marks worx are terrific and am happy to know that such talent has come from the homefront so to speak.
( durn olympics have brought about some patriotic feelings, go Team Canada go )

My site's hosted by Canaca, Canada, I have some very good friends on some pacific island...in Canadian territorial waters... and there must still be some Heyninck over there as they emigrated somewhere in the 1930ties...

First of all thanks for all of the feedback....I think I should clarify something....
I am not a graphic designer....I'm a marketer learing about design....I thought I had PS but what I have is the photo deluxe 3.0 home edition.
I have just downloaded a trial copy of PS and am wanting to learn some things....what I need to learn first is how to take an existing picture given to me by the client and convert the white or current background to a transparent one.
I'll post the pictures I'm working with on a web page so you can see them....at
http://localbizlink.net/pics.html
Any help would be appreciated.....
Please keep in mind I'm not familiar with this program yet....but I'm a fast learner...

Mark: it is French and means something like "every man has right to his personal preferences and tastes".
To quickly find out whether you want to spend the money on buying a licence for Photoshop or not is to try out the tuts you'll find on Mark's website at:
http://photoshopgurus.info
or
http://gurus.onlinedesignschool.com
And if you decide, like we all did, that it is worth the investment, you may want to buy a book called "Inside Photoshop6" by Gary Bouton to accompany the zimmions of tuts on the web.
Imo, the help function (as Mark also says) is better than the accompanying manual.
And don't forget to install the GIF plugin!

About the transparancy:
Look up in the help function how to use the magic erazor tool.
More accurate work can be achieved with selections and even better with masks, but these need at least that you did Mark's beginner-section tuts.

Too funny,
Hi Mark, I am really out in Surrey (no jokes please LOL ) but posted Vancouver as most prob know one better than the other...
Wow, you are right where all the action is...cool
Must be nice just to wander down to the beaches, I used to live in Kits and really miss that way of life.
Age? born in "60" but determined to feel young forever ( sometimes this determination worx better than other times, heehee)
Any ways, I couldn't resist the joust, glad all are laughing...
