you ran out of fuel, or the wind was such that you could not get back anyway so you ended up in the sea, you were dead, no chance of rescue - and besides, 3/5 minites is all it takes to die of hypothermia in the north sea when the weather is bad, the trawler men never used to learn to swim, no point
no heating, wrapped up in fur and gloves and hoping the frostbite did not get you
no weapons - the warships could shoot you down, but you could do nothing in return
and most of the time nothing much to see
