I can get Xara to throw the exception at will. Running the cambrdige32.exe as administrator doesn't solve the issue, but killing cambridge32 in Task Manager (Details) allows me to carry on right-clicking to my hearts content for the rest of the session.
Create a text box, add a shadow, right-click the text box...

you can set cambridge32.exe to always run as administrator [and xara too for that matter] - no idea if it would help, but you have that option

@xara @matt along with Neil did respond to my problem.
Best practice is that soft groups are best used when selecting elements across layers. That’s why soft groups were developed.
Best practice is Groups when elements are on the same layer.
I tend to have groupings that I can shift replacing other groups that are time sensitive. I was using soft groups for this material.
