feathering a rectangle actually rounds the corners first and can result in some unwanted 'spikes' and 'clouds'

a refinement of the method Gary posted is to take his final grouped bitmap and make a true colour bitmap copy of it - in the bitmap gallery, select this true colour copy; in the workspace select your original rectangle; press the transparency button in the bitmap gallery - this applies the true colour bitmap to the original vector as a transparency and results in a filled vector shape [rather than a grouped bitmap]
Very, very good DD; don't think I've come quite that far in the effort, but will get there eventually. What I see is that the fade is even on all four sides and I've not discovered that quite yet.
I was a bit surprised at the even fade on the rectangle given that the FX setup only specifies a radius.
If you want to try it.
Select the rectangle.
1. Click the Fx tool
2. Click new and select "Soften filter" then "Gaussian blur"
3. Play with the radius setting.
You may do 2. and 3. again to blur the blur !
